  • The finding of long lived free radicals produced by ionizing radiation in organic crystals and the quantification of this effect by electron spin resonance(ESR) spactroscopy has proven excellent dosimetric applicability. The tissue equivalent alanine dosimeter also appear appropriate for radiation therapy level dosimetry. The dose measurement was performed in a Rando phantom using high energy photons as produced by high energy medical linear accelerator and cobalt-60 teletherapy unit. The absorbed dose range of the ESR/alanine dosimetry system could be extended down to 0.1 Gy. The response of the alanine dosimeters was determined for photons at different therapeutic dose levels from less than 0.1 Gy to 100 Gy and the depth dose measurements were carried out for photon energies of 1.25MeV, 6 and 10 MV with alanine dosimeters in Rando phantom. Comparisons between ESR/alanine in a Rando phantom and ion chamber in a water phantom were made performing depth dose measurements to examine the agreement of both methods under field conditions.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the dose comparison using Radon phantom with 5 mm and 10 mm tissue equivalent materials, FIF, Wedge(15, 30 angle) and IMRT, to reduce the skin dose of the contralateral breast during breast cancer radiation therapy(Total dose: 50.4Gy). The dose was measured for each treatment plan by attaching to the 8 point of the contralateral breast of the treated region using a optical-stimulated luminance dosimeter(OSLD) as a comparative dose evaluation method. Of the OSLD used in the study, 10 were used with reproducibility within 3%. As a result, the average reduction rates of 5 mm and 10 mm in the FIF treatment plan were 37.23 cGy and 41.77 cGy, respectively, and the average reduction rates in the treatment plan using Wedge $15^{\circ}$ were 70.69 cGy and 87.57 cGy, respectively. The IMRT showed a reduction of 67.37 cGy and 83.17 cGy, respectively. The results of using bolus showed that as the thickness of the bolus increased in all treatments, the dose reduction increased. We concluded that mastectomy as well as general radiotherapy for breast cancer would be very effective for patients who are more likely to be exposed to scattered radiation due to a more demanding or complex treatment plan.

  • This paper presents a new method, which uses defected ground structure (DGS) on the ground planes of planar transmission lines such as microstrip and coplanar waveguide (CPW), to reduce the size of amplifiers. The main idea can be summarized as follow; DGS on the ground plane of microstrip or CPW line shows an increased slow-wave effect due to the additional equivalent L-C components. So the electrical length of the transmission line with DGS is longer than that of the standard transmission line for the same physical length. Then, the length of the transmission line with DGS can be shortened in order to maintain the original electrical length to be the same. This leads the matching of the original amplifier to be kept. In order to show the proposed method is valid, two kinds of amplifiers, the original amplifier and reduced amplifier, are fabricated, measured, and compared using both microstrip and CPW. The measured performances of the reduced amplifiers with DGS are quite similar to the ones of the original amplifiers for both microstrip and CPW amplifiers, even though the size of matching networks of the amplifiers with DGS are much smaller than those of the original amplifiers.

  • The riverbed material survey is to investigate the particle size distribution, specific gravity, porosity, etc. as basic data necessary for river channel plan such as calculation of sediment transport and change of river bed. In principle, the survey spots are 1 km interval in the longitudinal direction of the river and 3 points or more in the 1 cross section. Therefore, depending on longitudinal length of the river to be investigated, the number of surveyed sites is very large, and the time and cost for the investigation are correspondingly required. This study is to compare the particle size analysis method with the volumetric method and the image analysis method in work efficiency and cost and to examine the applicability of the image analysis method. It was confirmed that the diameter of the equivalent circle converted by the image analysis method can be applied to the analysis of bed material particle size. In the gravel stream with a particle size of less than 10 cm and a large shape factor, the analytical result of the bed material by the image analysis method is accurate. However, when the shape factor decreases as the particle size increases, the error increases. In addition, analysis results of the work efficiency and cost of the volume method and the image analysis method showed a reduction of about 80%.

  • Uncooled metallic thin-film thermopile infrared detectors have been fabricated, and the figures of merit for the detectors were examined. The hot junctions of a thermopile were prepared on a $Si_{3}N_{4}/SiO_{2}/Si_{3}N_{4}$-membrane which acts as a thermal isolation layer, the cold junctions on the membrane supported with the silicon rim which functions as a heat sink, and Au-black was used as an infrared absorber. Infrared absorbance of Au-black, which strongly depends on the chamber pressure during Au-evaporation and its mass per area, was found to be about 90 % in the wavelength range from 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 14${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Voltage responsivity, noise equivalent power, and specific detectivity of Bi-Sb thermopile infrared detector at 5 Hz-chopping frequency were about 10.5V/W, 2.3 nW/Hz$^{1/2}$, 및 $1.9\times10^{7}$ cm.Hz$^{1/2}$/w at room temperature in air, respectively.

  • In this paper, the planar, compact, and broadband phased array antenna system for IMT-2000 applications has been investigated. Two methods far designing a low-cost and low-complex beam-farming network are proposed. First, a new compact and broadband phase shifter with continuously controlled phase bits is designed by using parallel coupled lines. Second, its equivalent phase delay line is suggested to be capable of replacing the complex phase shifter with a reference phase bit on a phased array antenna. For the purpose of achieving the broadband system, in addition to the broadband phase shifter, a wide-slot antenna with a ground reflector is utilized as an element antenna. Therefore, the phased array antenna system has achieved compact size, broad bandwidth, and wide steering angle, although it has low complexity and low fabrication cost. The 3${\times}$1 phased array antenna system has a compact size of 1.6 λ${\times}$ l.6 λ, which is the sufficient ground plane of the wide-slot antenna. Experimental results present that the S$\_$11/ has less than 15 dB within the band and its radiation patterns on an E-plane have the capability of steering an antenna beam from -29$^{\circ}$to +30$^{\circ}$.

  • The present study considers the usage of concentrated forces to simulate real panel flutter. The concept of using concentrated forces have been validated for studying the flutter of wing structure in subsonic flow, yet its application in the supersonic region remained to be explored. Hence, a simply supported panel subjected to forces, equivalent to aerodynamic force is considered for studying supersonic panel flutter. The distributed aerodynamic forces are approximated to few concentrated forces by taking numerical integration. The aeroelastic equation is formulated using the classical small-deflection theory and the piston theory for linear panel flutter whereas for emulated panel flutter the flutter equation is derived by replacing the pressure due to aerodynamic loading with pressure from concentrated loading. Finally, flutter frequency, flutter dynamic pressure, and corresponding mode shape are found for emulated panel flutter and compared with linear panel flutter. Two important parameters, the number of concentrated forces and their location are discussed through numerical examples and optimization process respectively. So far, the flutter results acquired in this study are reasonable to suggest the feasibility of reproducing panel flutter using concentrated forces.

  • Dosimerty based on electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis of radiation induced free radicals in amino acids is relevant to biological dosimetry applications. Alanine detectors are without walls and are tissue equivalent. Therefore, alanine ESR dosimetry looks promising for use in the therapy level. The dose range of the alanine/ESR dosimetry system can be extended down to 1 Gy. In water phantom the absorbed dose of electrons generated by a medical linear accelerator of different initial energies $(6\~21MeV)$ and therapeutic dose levels (1~60 Gy) was measured. Furthermore, depth dose measurements carried out with alanine dosimeters were compared with ionization chamber measurements. As the results, the measured absorbed doses for shallow depth of initial electron energies above 15 MeV were higher by$2\~5\%$ than those calculated by nominal energy $C_E$ factors. This seems to be caused by low energy scattered beams generated from the scattering foil and electron cones of beam projecting device in medical linear accelerator.

  • Most of flood protection walls built on the impingement in mountain rivers have been made of concrete. It may cause flood disasters because the smooth wall surface could increase flow velocity. In this study the hydraulic experiments was carried out to evaluate the effect of one side wall with rectangular vertical ribs on flow resistance in open channel. The ratio of the pitch between vertical ribs to its depth, ${\lambda}_{nv}$, was designed so that it include the so-called d type and k type roughness. The range of Froude number, $F_r$, based on hydraulic radius is 0.81~1.12. Flow resistance in the open channel with a rib sidewall depends on the interval length of each ribs and the flow discharge. Maximum flow resistance occurred when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is 9. In the d type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is less than 3, the flow resistance decreases with increase of flow discharge. In the k type roughness which ${\lambda}_{nv}$ is greater than 3, the flow resistance increases with increase of flow discharge. The increments of flow resistance are especially great when ${\lambda}_{nv}$ are 9 and 12. The resistance due to vertical rib is mostly by the shape resistance and the vertical rib on one sidewall of open channel affects on the flow resistance so that the equivalent roughness heights of vertical rib may occur in scale of flow depth. Therefore the vertical ribs may be used to reduce the flow velocity and to move the location of maximum flow velocity from the rib sidewall to the centerward in a cross section of channels.

  • In this study, the virtual fixed point analysis and 3D full-modeling analysis for pile bent structures are conducted by considering various influencing factors and the applicability of the virtual fixed point theory is discussed. Also, a discrete analysis calculating separately both the superstructure and substructure of pile bent structures is performed on the basis of an equivalent base spring model by taking into account the major influencing parameters such as soil conditions, combined loading and pile diameter. The results show that the settlement and lateral deflection of the virtual fixed point theory are smaller than those of 3D full-modeling analysis. On the other hand, the virtual fixed point analysis overestimates the axial force and bending moment compared with 3D full-modeling analysis. It is shown that the virtual fixed point analysis cannot adequately predict the real behavior of pile bent structures. It is also found that discrete analysis gives similar results of lateral deflection and bending moment to those of unified analysis. Based on this study, it is found that discrete analysis considering column-pile interaction conditions is capable of predicting reasonably well the behavior of pile bent structures. It can be effectively used to perform a more economical design of pile bent structures.
