  • The purpose of this study is to develop an inquiry sheet for the contents of the clothing curriculum of home economics in middle schools using a physical fiber Identification method to increase students' interests in and understanding of clothing materials. Therefore, a physical fiber Identification method suitable to middle school students was developed in actual classrooms and the effects were analyzed. As a result, the physical fiber identification method was developed to distinguish between wool and acrylic knits; moreover, the identification method between silk and polyester fiber was studied. And then the inquiry sheet using fiber identification method was also developed. When interests in learning, attitudes of acceptance toward learning, and learning achievements of the experimental group (used the inquiry sheet) and the control group (did not use the inquiry sheet) were compared, the experimental group scored higher in every category, all of which were meaningful differences. Thus, this study demonstrated that the developed fiber differentiation method and inquiry sheet improved self-directed learning as well as learners' understanding of clothing materials by enabling the application the knowledge to the learners' realities.

  • A three-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea was developed to investigate the intermediate scale processes in the region. The model was applied to the three dimensional computation of the typhoon induced currents on the continental: shelf for a 5 days period in Summer, 1978. The circulation pattern showing depth and spatial distribution of currents over the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea is presented and analyzed. This initial study has been undertaken in association with the programme of establishment of real-time forecasting schemes based on dynamic principles.

  • In semi-enclosed shallow sea areas typified by the Yellow sea and the East China Sea, currents and sea surface variations are predominantly tidal. During the recent years two-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic model of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been developed, based on the vertically-integrated equations of motion and continuity, capable of reproducing amplitudes and phases of the principal components of tides to satisfiable accuracy. As a subsequent development a three-dimensional hydrodynamical nymerical model covering the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea has been formulated to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continented to investigate the vertical distribution of horizontal tidal current and the response of the continental shelf sea to steady uniform wind stress field imposed over the surface. Features of the M2 tidal current and the wind-induced three-dimensional current structure determined from the computation have been examined and discussed.

  • The tidal and meteorological condition associated with wintertime surges in the Ease China Sea are described. The vertically-integrated finite difference model of the East china Sea have been used to investigate the surges generated during a period of 5 days in November, 1983 dynamically. Computed residual elevations are compared with hourly records form selected tide gauges along the west coast of Korea. Preliminary results on circulation pattern derived from the numerical model are presented and discussed. Further refinement of the model using current meter observation is presently being performed to provide more accurate information on bottom stress distribution.

  • The East China Sea is an important region as nursery and spawning grounds for pelagic fishes such as jack mackerel, common mackerel etc. , and thus constitutes a major fishing area for purse-seine fishery. The environment surrounding in this region is under the influence of the Yellow Sea Cold Water, China Coastal Water and Kuroshio Current. The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of oceanographic conditions and thermal fronts on the formation of the fishing grounds for the mackerels in the East China Sea. Through the analyses of fisheries statistics during 1968-1976 and temperature data, the following facts are found: 1) Approximately $70\%$ of the total mackerel(common) catches appeared to be come from the Tsushima Current region which includes Sakai coast of the Japan Sea, eastern Tsushima and Shirase Island, and Jeju Island of Korea. This area covers only about $8\%$ of the East China Sea. 2) Main fishing grounds for the jack mackerel are also centered around the area of southwestern Goto, Shirase and eastern Tsushima Island where the catches accounted for about $54\%$ of the total jack mackerel catches. 3) Fluctuations in annual catches are relatively small in the Tsushima Current region, compared to other regions such as Yellow Sea, southwestern coast of Kyushu and mid-western part of the East China Sea, where the fisheries yields varied considerably due to unstable fishing conditions. 4) It appears that the fishing grounds for the jack mackerel are mainly distributed along the warmer region ($15-20^{\circ}C$) of the thermal front, and those for the common mackerel are in somewhat colder region ($13-16^{\circ}C$) in the Tsushima Current.
