  • An explicit direct time integration method based solution algorithm is proposed to predict dynamic postbuckling response of thin plates. Based on the von Karman's plate equations and Marquerre's shallow shell theory, a rectangular plate finite element is formulated and utilized in this study. The element formulation takes into account geometrical nonlinearity and initial deflection of plates. The solution algorithm employs the central difference method. Using the computer program developed by the authors, dynamic postbuckling behavior of elastic thin plates under impact loading is investigated by considering the time variation of load and load duration. The efficiency of the proposed solution algorithm is examined through illustrative numerical examples.

  • The numerical analysis on tile behaviour of mooring system in the offshore guyed tower is presented. The governing equilibrium equations are derived by the principle of virtual work. The drag and inertia effects of fluid are included in a Morrison type equation. The finite element method is used in the computation. Geometric nonlinearities for the analysis of the mooring line are considered in which both modified Newton-Raphson method and Newmark-$\beta$ method are employed. Numerical experiments show the validity and the capability of the developed mathematical formulation.

  • The present paper investigates methods to control dynamic stall using an optimal approach. An unsteady aerodynamic sensitivity analysis code is developed by a direct differentiation method from a two-dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes solver including a two-equation turbulence model. Dynamic stall control is conducted by minimizing an objective function defined at an instant instead of integrating for a period of time. Unsteady sensitivity derivatives of the objective function are calculated by the sensitivity code, and optimization is carried out using a linear line search method at every physical time step. Numerous examples of dynamic stall control using control parameters such as nose radius, maximum thickness of airfoil, or suction show satisfactory results.

  • In this study, the reduced system for the dynamic analysis is proposed and the selection criterion of the primary degrees of freedom is presented considering the relation between natural frequency and external loading frequency. A well-constructed reduced system can assure the accurate representation of the dynamic behavior under arbitrary dynamic loads. For selecting the primary degrees of freedom of the reduced system, we employ the robust two-level condensation scheme of which the reliability has been proven through previous study. In the numerical examples, the reliability of the dynamic analysis based on the reduced system is demonstrated through comparing with those of global system.

  • Structural optimization pursues improved performance of structures. Nowadays, structural optimization is applied to the design of huge and complex structures such as an airplane. As the number of the finite elements is increased, the analysis solution becomes more accurate. However, the design cost using the finite element model is significantly increased. The component mode synthesis method that is using the substructure synthesis method is frequently employed in order to keep the accuracy and reduce the cost. A new design method for structural optimization is proposed to reduce the design cost and to consider the dynamic effect of the structure. The proposed method reduces the design cost by applying the equivalent static loads on the design domain. An example of linear dynamic response optimization is solved and the efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated.

  • This paper deals with the space-time finite element analysis of two-dimensional vibration problem with a single variable. The method of space-time finite elements enables the simpler solution than the usual finite element analysis with discretization in space only. We present a discretization technique in which finite element approximations are used in time and space simultaneously for a relatively large time period. The weighted residual process is used to formulate a finite element method for a space-time domain. A stability problem is described and some investigations for chosen type of rectangular space-time finite elements are carried out. Instability is caused by a too large time step of successive time steps in the traditional time-dependent problems. It has been shown that the numerical stability of time-stepping on the larger time steps is quite good. The unstructured space-time finite element not only overcomes the shortcomings of the stability in the traditional numerical methods, but it is also endowed with the features of an effective computational technique. Some numerical examples have been presented to illustrate the efficiency of the described method.

  • In this paper, measured and calculated responses are compared in order to give how the static and dynamic responses occurred in steel railway bridges due to train loads could be calculated appropriately. From this, it is investigated how the impact factors are varied by changing the train speed above 100km/h Field measurement is carried out by the steel strain gages and displacement transducers at the main design points, and then the static and dynamic response, fundamental frequencies, damping ratios and impact factors of the bridges are obtained. Static analysis is done using the computer program developed according to three dimensional matrix structural analysis in which the trains and bridges are modelled as 1,2 and 3 dimensions. Dynamic analysis is done according to 2 approaches, the moving force and mass problem. In moving force problem, the solutions are obtained by the modesuperposition-method and in moving mass problem by the direct integration method. From this study, it is known that in order to obtain the static response in the railway bridges, the bridge could be modelled by 1 or 2 dimension as in the highway bridge, however the response ratio(measured/calculaled) is high comparing to the highway bridges. By the way, the dynamic response should be obtained by the moving mass problem. And by comparing the measured and code specified impact factors, it is known that the factors specified in the present railway bridge code are very safe under the present service speed below 100km/h. However, because the factors become very high under the speed above 100km/h, especially in the simple plate girder bridge, it is thought that the code specification on impact factor should be discussed enough under the rapid transit system.

  • The dynamic behavior of a structure by earthquake is considerably affected by the flexibility of the base soil. This phenomenon is called dynamic soil-structure interaction effect. There are two broad categories of soil-structure interaction analytical technique: direct method and substructure method. Substructure method, in contrast to direct method, has many limitations in applying to embedded structures or structures on layered soil sites, while it is relatively simple. In this paper, a simplified soil-structure interaction analytical procedure using substructure method is proposed to eliminate its original limitations. The proposed method is well applicable to embedded structures or structures on layered soil sites with as good results as FLUSH.
