  • Finite Element Method is a strong tool to analyse static and dynamic problem of a structure. FEM is a good method for static problem, but for dynamic problem there are some differences between real phenomena and analyzed phenomena. Therefore some modifications are needed to identify two results. In this paper authors propose a genetic algorithm method 1) to adjust dimensions of plate for identifying natural frequencies, 2) to fit amplitude of FEM Frequency Response Function(FRF) onto it of real FRF. Analysis by raw FEM data gave questions if the results were for the same object. By only adjusting Young's modulus much better accordances were obtained, but limitation existed still. Very good agreements were achieved by shape modification and damping coefficient identification.

  • A cable element happens to vibration easily rather than other elements because a cable element has few rotational stiffness. Dynamic motion of stay cable is distinguished from vibration by wind and/or rain and excitation by support movement. Mostly a stay cable is vibrated by wind and/or rain except that when natural periods coincide between stiffening girder and stay cable. It happens to deterioration of serviceability and durability by vortex shedding, rainy-wind induced vibration, and galloping. Additional damping generated by installation of cable damper is well known good scheme against above phenomena. Researchers have lack of effort to develop the recommendations even if cable stayed bridges are designed and constructed in Korea. Therefore, development of the domestic recommendations should be achieved as soon as possible. This study suggests the consistent and systematic recommendations on vibration controlling design of stay cable by installation of damper. It gives readers two important methodologies that one evaluates required damping ratio, the other determines installing point considering efficiency.

  • This paper proposes a double cantilever sandwich-beam method fur evaluating the frequency dependence of dynamic characteristics of rubbers. The flexural vibration of a double cantilever sandwich-beam specimen with an inserted rubber layer was studied using a finite element simulation in combination with the sine-sweep test. Quadratic relationships of dynamic elastic modulus and material loss factor of rubbers with frequency were suggested employing the least square error method.

  • The water content of soil near the ground subgrade varies seasonally, and dynamic deformational characteristics of soil are affected by the variation of water content. Contrary to previous studies which used various specimens of different compaction moisture contents, the influences of water content and capillary Pressure on dynamic deformational characteristics of soil were investigated using the given specimen controlling the matric suction. RC/TS(resonant column and torsional shear) testing equipment was modified so that it can control water content with changing capillary pressure(matric suction). RC/TS tests were performed on subgrade soil collected in the KHC(Korea Highway Corporation) test road. In the field, the cross-hole tests were performed and the water contents were measured at the same site to verify the feasibility and applicability of RC/TS test results. As water content decreased, the tendency of increasing shear moduli in field was well matched with laboratory test results.

  • Research on high-attenuation concrete for the vibration reduction performance by mixing epoxy-based synthetic resins and aggregates is actively being conducted. The curing time of high-attenuation concrete is very short because water is not used, and the physical and dynamic properties are very excellent. therefore, it is expected to be widely used in building structures requiring reduction of interior-floor noise and vibration. Furthermore, A way to expand the applicability of the high-damping concrete mixed with polymer in the field of reinforcement material have been variously studied. In order to replace polymer concrete with ordirnary concrete and existing anti-vibration reinforcement material, it is necessary to review overall vibration reduction performance considering physical properties, dynamic properties, productivity and field applicability. In this study, the physical and dynamic properties of polymer concrete by epoxy mixing ratio compared with ordirnary concrete. As a result, the elastic modulus was similar. On the other hand, polymer concrete for the compressive, tensile, and flexural strengths was quite more excellent. In particular, the measured tensile strength of polymer concrete was 4-10 times higher than that of ordirnary concrete. it was a big difference, and the frequency response function and damping ratio was studied through modal test and finite element analysis model. The dynamic stiffness of polymer concrete was 20% greater than that of ordirnary concrete, and the damping ratio of polymer concrete was approximately 3 times more than that of ordirnary concrete.

  • Coarse granular geomaterials containing large gravels are broadly used for construction of large geotechnical systems such as dams, levees, railways and backfills. It is necessary to evaluate deformation characteristics of these materials for dynamic analysis, e.g. seismic design. This study presents evaluation of dynamic deformation characteristics of coarse materials using large scale resonant column testing apparatus, which uses specimens with 200 mm in diameter and 400 mm in height, and the effects of gradation characteristics on maximum shear modulus, shear modulus reduction curve and damping characteristics were investigated. From experimental study using rock-fill materials for a dam, we could see that the largest or mean particle size affects the shape of shear modulus reduction curve. When the specimens are prepared under the same conditions for maximum particle size, the coefficient of uniformity affects the confining stress exponent of maximum shear modulus. It could be concluded that the maximum particle size is an factor which affects shear modulus reduction curve, and that the coefficient of uniformity is for small strain shear modulus, especially for the sensitivity to confining stress.

  • In the earth structures of railways, large coarse granular materials are widely used as fill materials. However, experimental studies that consider the dynamic properties of these coarse granular materials have rarely been carried out in Korea due to the lack of a large scale test apparatus in this country. In this study, large scale cyclic triaxial tests were carried out for materials such as reinforced roadbed (subballast, graded crushed stone), transition zone gravel, and the upper subgrade of a railway. These specimens were prepared according to certain conditions (dry unit weight, grain size distribution, and so on) specified in the Korea railroad design standard. Based on these large triaxial test results, normalized shear modulus and damping ratio curves according to small strain level are suggested. A model and coefficients for each material are also proposed.

  • Weathered granite soil is the most representative as a surface soil in Korea. In this paper, the dynamic properties and settlement characteristics of Korea granite soil are studied through the dynamic triaxial compression tests. The dynamic characteristics are very important on the analysis of the foundations under dynamic loading such as machine vibration and earthquake. Soil samples having different grain sixtes were prepared at the relative densities between 80oA and 90oA and tested to measure shear moduli and damping ratios at each level of shear strain. The measured shear moduli of weathered granite soils showed large variations according to the grain sizes, confining pressures, relative densities and shear strains. Sandy weathered granite had a little larger dynamic properties than the average values of the sand studied by Seed and Idriss. Pot the well compacted granite soils, little residual settlements occured due to dynamic loading.

  • In case of general structures, it has been known that the strain amplitude band experienced by the base in a state of service load is less than 1% and most of the base show low, strain amplitude behavior less than 0.01%. In this study examining the influence affected to dynamic behavior in a condition of the low strain amplitude of unsaturated decomposed granite soils, the resonant column test, using some samples in Su-won area, has been performed for each degree of saturation resulted from different void ratios and confined stress. It is found out that the minimum value of the damping ratio occurred in roughly $17{\sim}18%$ according to void ratios regardless of confined pressure in the same manner with the case of the maximum shear elastic modulus; and it is estimated that for the influence of surface tension in the optimum degree of saturation, the damping ratio appears to be least.
