  • The number of railway bridges in Korea reaches to about 3,000. Among them, the ratio of steel bridges is about 47%. Most of the long span railway bridges take the truss type, its number is 15 in Korea. These bridges have more than 30 years service life, it is expected that the damages of cracks and corrosion is going. Therefore, the estimation of fatigue life with random stress is considered as significant subject in maintenance. In this paper, the random stress was measured in bridges and counted the stress cycles using the rainflow counting method So, the stress range frequencies and their equivalent stress are obtained and the amplification factor for the span length, bridge types and traveling speed is assessed by the dynamic testing. From the results, the stress range of the stringer and the lower chord is higher than the other members and the characteristics of the stress histogram is varied to the loading system and the amount of the passing through trains. And the impact effects are depended on the traveling speed as well as the span length.

  • This paper presents the ERRI design diagrams of KTX and HEMU applicable to simply supported single span bridges, and analyzes the dynamic characteristics and design considerations of the bridges under KTX and HEMU using the diagrams. The design diagrams of KTX and HEMU are calculated for the bridges with 25m, 30m, 35m and 40m span lengths, which are widely used for simple bridge in Korea. From the design diagrams, the dynamic characteristics of the bridges with the selected span lengths are analyzed. In addition, the design consideration is discussed to satisfy the design requirement of acceleration. It is desirable for the bridge with 25m span length to avoid resonance both for KTX and HEMU. Since larger responses are expected for HEMU in the bridge with 30m span length, and for KTX in the bridge with 35m and 40m span length, the bridges should be planned to have enough mass satifying acceleration requirement at resonance, or to avoid the resonance.

  • In order to support the load of the train with enough stiffness, a study on an effective method for the characterization of the stiffness of the compacted subgrade is required. In this study, the crosshole-type dynamic cone penetrometer (CDCP) is used for the stiffness characterization of the subgrade along the depth. For the application of the CDCP test, three points of compacted subgrades are selected as the study sites. For the study sites, CDCP test, in-situ density test, and light falling weight deflectometer (LFWD) test are conducted. As the results of CDCP tests, shear wave velocity profiles are obtained by using the travel times and the travel distances of the shear waves along the depth. In addition, maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) profiles are estimated by using the density of the subgrades and the shear wave velocity profiles. The averaged maximum shear moduli at each testing point are highly correlated with the dynamic deflection moduli ($E_{vd}$) determined by LFWD tests. Therefore, a reliable stiffness characterization of the subgrade can be conducted by using CDCP tests. In addition, because CDCP characterizes the stiffness of the subgrade along the depth rather than a representative value, CDCP test may be effectively used for the stiffness characterization of the subgrade.

  • To evaluate the structural integrity and dynamic characteristic of the knuckle part of a KTX anti-roll bar, an experimental and a numerical approach were used in this study. In the experimental approach, the acceleration and strain data for the knuckle parts of the KTX and KTX-SANCHUN anti-roll bar were respectively measured to evaluate and compare its structural dynamic characteristics under the operating environments of the Honam line. In the numerical approach, the evaluation of its structural integrity was conducted using LS-DYNA 3D, and then, the reliability of the finite element model used was ensured by a comparative evaluation with the experiment. The numerical results showed that the stress and velocity field of the knuckle part composed of a layered structure of a thin steel plate and rubber were more moderate than those of the knuckle part made of only a thick steel block owing to the reduction of relative contact between the knuckle and the connecting rod. It was found that the knuckle part made of a thin steel plate and rubber was recommended as the best solution to improve its structural integrity resulting from the elastic behavior of the KTX anti-roll bar being enabled under a repeating external force.

  • In general, under the repetitive dynamic load generated by rail cars running on the track, subgrade soil experiences changes of stress conditions such as deviatoric stress (${\sigma}_d$) and bulk stress (${\theta}$). Due to the repetitive change of deviatoric stress (${\sigma}_d$) with number of loadings, the resilient modulus ($M_R$) can be obtained by using the measured resilient strain (${\varepsilon}_r$) after a sufficient number of loadings. At present, no plausible and unified test method has been proposed to obtain the resilient modulus of railway track subgrade soil. In this study, a possible test method for obtaining the resilient modulus ($M_R$) of railway track subgrade soil is proposed; this test, by utilizing repetitive triaxial compression testing, can consider all the important parameters, such as the confining stress, deviatoric stress, and number of loadings. By adapting and using the proposed test method to obtain $M_R$, $M_R$ values for compacted track subgrade soil can be successfully determined using soil obtained in three field sites of railway track construction with changing water content range from OMC. In addition, shear modulus (G) ~ shear strain (${\gamma}$) relation data were also obtained using a mid-size RC test. A correlation analysis was performed using the obtained G and $M_R$ values while considering the strain levels and modes of strain direction.
