  • As a transition region between ocean and land, coastal wetlands are significant ecosystems that maintain water quality, provide natural habitat for a variety of species, and slow down erosion. The energy of coastal waves and storm surges are reduced by vegetation cover, which also helps to maintain wetlands through increased sediment deposition. Wave attenuation by vegetation is a highly dynamic process and its quantification is important for understanding shore protection and modeling coastal hydrodynamics. In this study, laboratory experiments were used to quantify wave attenuation as a function of vegetation type as well as wave conditions. Wave attenuation characteristics were investigated under regular waves for rigid model vegetation. Laboratory hydraulic test and numerical analysis were conducted to investigate regular wave attenuation through emergent vegetation with wave steepness ak and relative water depth kh. The normalized wave attenuation was analyzed to the decay equation of Dalrymple et al.(1984) to determine the vegetation transmission coefficients, damping factor and drag coefficients. It was found that drag coefficient was better correlated to Keulegan-Carpenter number than Reynolds number and that the damping increased as wave steepness increased.

  • In this study, the effect of temperature-induced uncertainty to damage monitoring using acceleration-impedance response features is analyzed for presterssed concrete(PSC) girder bridges. Firstly, a damage monitoring algorithm using global and local vibration features is designed. As global and local features, acceleration and electro-mechanical impedance features are selected respectively. Secondly, the temperature effect on the acceleration and impedance features for a lab-scaled PSC girder is experimentally analyzed. From the experimental results, compensation models for temperature-acceleration features and temperature-impedance features are estimated. Finally, the feasibility of the acceleration-impedance-based damage monitoring technique using the compensation model is evaluated in the PSC girder for which a set of prestress-loss and flexural stiffness loss cases were dynamically tested.

  • A coupled river-overland hydrodynamic model was applied to estimate flood risk by a scenario-based approach. The study area is Seongseo Industrial Complex in Daegu which is located near Nakdong river and Geumho river. Inundation depth and velocity at each time were calculated by applying a coupled 1D/2D hydrodynamic model to the target area of interest. The 2D inundation analysis for river and overland domain was performed with the scenario-based approach that there are levee overflow against 100/200 year high quantile (97.5%) design flood and levee break against 100/200 year normal quantile (50%) design flood. The level of flood risk was displayed for resident/industrial area using information about maximum depth and velocity of each node computed from the 2D inundation map. The research outcome would be very useful in establishing specified emergency action plans (EAP) in case of levee break and overflowing resulting from a flood.

  • In this study, the drag forces on a submerged square cylinder were analyzed using a three dimensional hydrodynamic model. The numerical results were compared with the experimental results to check the reliability of the numerical simulations, and the characteristics of the drag forces with the relative depths were analyzed by analyzing the pressure acting on the cylinder surface, which are normally difficult to measure experimentally. The numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square cylinder originate mainly from the pressure forces, and component of the shear forces decreased with increasing relative depth. The pressure coefficient distributions showed that in the case of a low relative depth, a relatively high pressure was formed in the front of a cylinder, and a relatively low pressure was formed in the rear, which gives a high drag coefficient. In a high relative depth, the pressure in the front decreased and pressure in the rear increased, which is a similar phenomenon to that normally observed in two dimensional square cylinder flow. The effect of the static pressure was analyzed and the surface elevation difference between the front and rear zone of a cylinder has a limited effect on the drag forces. Finally, the numerical results showed that the drag forces acting on a submerged square are dominated by the dynamic pressure formed by three dimensional flow and the distribution of local surface elevation.

  • A method has been developed, which can be handled easily and economically for inputting depth data of complex bathymetry and enourmous tidal flats such as Mokpo coastal zone. The method is applied to Chungkye Bay, and some hydrodynamic features related with tidal flat are analyzed. Tidal amplification by construction of the sea-dike and sea-walls had been detected not only near Mokpo Harbor but also at Chungkye Bay which is connected with Mokpo Harbor by a narrow channel. This brings about the increase of tidal flat area, which makes the ebb dominance at Chungkye Bay more seriously. This pronounced ebb dominance with the increase of tidal discharge at the channel between Chungkye Bay and Mokpo Harbor, which results in deepened ebb dominance near Mokpo Harbor as well.

  • The effects of wave groups on reflection and transmission over a submerged breakwater are studied by using a hydrodynamic numerical model and five independent wave grouping parameters. Based on qualitative analyses of limited data, it is found that the reflection and transmission coefficients of submerged breakwater may be strongly correlated with the incident wave groups. The reflection and transmission coefficients tend to decrease as wave groups become relatively larger. In particular, the reflection and transmission coefficients due to wave groups are evaluated smaller than those of single incident waves. However, the reflection and transmission coefficients are not affected by the interval of higher wave groups. It is finally concluded that the mean of nul-length among wave grouping parameters can be an useful parameter for correlating the wave groups with the reflection and transmission coefficients of submerged breakwater.

  • This study used Navier-Stokes Solver(LES-WASS-2D) for analyzing hydrodynamic characteristics with high order in order to analyze self-burial mechanism of pipeline with spoiler under steady flow. For the validity and effectiveness of numerical model used, it was compared and analyzed with the experiment to show flow characteristics around the pipeline with and without the spoiler. And the hydraulic(flow, vortex, and pressure) and force characteristics were numerically analyzed around the pipeline according to the incident velocity, and shape and arrangement of spoiler. Primarily, if the spoiler is attached to the pipeline, the projected area is increased resulting in higher flow velocity toward the back and strong vortex caused by wake stream in the back. Secondly, the spoiler causes vertically asymmetric flow and vorticity fields and thus asymmetric pressure field. It increases the asymmetry of force on the pipe and thus develops large downward fluid force. Both of them are the causes of selfburying of the pipeline with spoiler.

  • To improve the water quality of the recently constructed Siwhaho, sluice gates were operated to allow free exchange of water with the sea. This estuarine lake connected to the outer sea through narrow gates is affected mainly by flushing by gate operation and river flows and wind forcing sometimes. As a predicting tool far the water qualities, a three-dimensional finite volume model CE-QUAL-ICM is incorporated into a finite element hydrodynamic model, TIDE3D. In coupling these two different modules, a new error minimization technique is applied by considering conservation of mass. Model tests for one year after calibration and validation using field observation show that eutrophication and other biological changes reach quasi-steady state after initial 60 days of simulation, thus it would be necessary to consider moderate ramp up option to remove initial uncertainties due to cold start option. Sediment-water interaction might not be a concern in the long-term simulation, since its effect is negligible. Simulated results show the newly applied scheme can be applied with satisfaction not only fur lessening of eutrophic processes in an estuarine lake but also looking for some active circulation to improve water quality.

  • Due to the climate change, torrential rain downpours unprecedentedly, and urban areas repeatedly suffer from the inundation damages, which cause miserable loss of property and life by flooding. Two major reasons of urban flooding are river inundation and inland submergence. However, most of previous studies ignored the comprehensive mechanism of those two factors, and showed discrepancy and inadequacy due to the linear summation of each analysis result. In this study, river inundation and inland flooding were analyzed at the same time. Petrov-stabilizing scheme was adopted to capture the shock wave accurately by which river inundation can be modularized. In addition, flux-blocking alrotithm was introduced to handle the wet and dry phenomena. Sink/source terms with EGR (Exponentially Growth Rate) concept were incorporated to the shallow water equations to consider inland flooding. Comprehensive simulation implementing inland flooding and river inundation at the same time produced satisfactory results because it can reflect the counterbalancing and superposition effects, which provided accurate prediction in flooding analysis.
