  • The vegetation of Saeng-il Island was surveyed over four times from July, 1979 to May, 1981. The results obtained are summarized as follows: Plants of this island consisted of 3 foma, 28 varieties, 211 species, 203 genera, and 89 families. Evergreen broad-leaved trees consisted of 24 species, including Camellia japonica and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii. The vegetatiion of the southwest slope was more favorable than that of the northeast slope and the vegetation of other areas were negligible. Pueraria thunbergiana and Clerodendron trichotomum were predominant in the area between Yucheon-ri and Geummo-ri. Evergreen broad-leaved trees, such as Camellia Japonica, Neolitsea sencea, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, etc. were predominated in the areas of Gulzeon-ri, Yongchul-ri and Geummo-ri. However, artificial succession to pinus thunbergii presently dominating the areas has taken place due to human interferences (for charcaol, building materials, grazing etc.). It seems to be worthy of conserving the community of Camellia japonica on the back slope of Geummo-ri and that of Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii between Gulzeon-ri and Hangdo-dong. It is notceable, in particular, that Damnacanthus indicus distributed in Jeju and Dolsan islands was also discovered in this island.

  • Culture conditions for plant regeneration of Camellia japonica were achieved by organogenesis in explants of cotyledon. Seed cotyledons were cultured on MS medium containing various auxin, 2,4-D or NAA and cytokinins BA. The adventitious shoot buds were efficiently formed without embryogenesis on the basal region of cotyledon cultured on MS medium supplemented with $0.1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ 2.4-D and $1\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ BA. Seed cotyledons could be used as a source of explants in experiments of genetic transformation of the genotypes evaluated for improving the efficiency of production of transgenic Camellia plants.

  • Vegetational structure and successional sere were investigated for evergreen broad-leaved forest in Hongdo. Forty-nine plots were classified into six groups, which are Camellea japonica community, Machilus thunbergii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii-Machilus thunbergii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii community, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboidii-Camellea japonica community and evergreen broad-leaved mixed community by the DCA ordiantion and TWINSPAN techniques. Successional sere of the forest vegetation in the surveyed area were proceeding from Pinus densiflora through Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieholdii to Neolitsea sericea, Dendropanax morbifera, Machilus japonica, Quercus acuta and Mahilus thunbergii in the canopy layer group and from Ligustrum japonicum, Ardisia japonica. Eurya japonica. Rhaphiolepsis umbellata through Trachelosperum asiaticum, Kadsura japonica. Litsia Japonica, Camellea japonica to Aucuba japonica, Euscaphis japonica, Ficus erecta in the understory and shrub layer group.

  • Traced observations were carried out for efficiency and behavior of Camellia japonica L in bloom stage by employing $p^{32}$-labeled phosphorus, growing in Southern Korea, and the results were as follows. 1) The percentage of phosphorus contained in flowerbud was double the value of the other parts, and the root and the stem were the same patterns in the course of the times. 2) The circulation of the phosphorus in the plant seems to occur within 24 hours, the proportions of the phosphorus at the growing-point and flowerbud had a half of the total phosphorus contained in other parts. 3) Specific activities of each part were notable on the growing-point where, after 24 hours it took more than 80 percent. On the other hand, the efficiency rate which derived from the phosphorus was shown as about 19 percents.
