Taxonomic Study of genus Sedum and Phedimus (Crassulaceae) in Korea Based on External Morphology (외부형태 형질에 근거한 한국산 돌나물과내 돌나물속과 기린초속의 분류학적 고찰)

  • The genus Sedum comprises about 400 taxa with worldwide distribution, and about 20 taxa of the genus Phedimus distributed from Asia to Europe. According to some taxonomists, Phedimus and Sedum are two separate genera of the family Crassulaceae; however, in Korea Phedimus has been treated as a subgenus Aizoon within the genus Sedum. This ambiguous taxonomic treatment of the genus Phedimus needs further confirmation. In the study, we investigated morphological characteristics such as the whole plant height, leaf morphology, and seed coat features of these two genera. We believe that these characters are very important to distinguish Phedimus and Sedum. The result indicated that the seed surface pattern was the most useful diagnostic character. The Sedum had a hexagonal pattern with a single nipple protrusion, whereas the Phedimus had a rectangular pattern with papilla on both ends. The results of this study strongly support the separation of Phedimus from Sedum and thus Phedimus need to be treated as an independent genus.

The taxonomic entity and distribution of Korean Sedum formosanum (Crassulaceae) revealed in 133 years (133년만에 밝혀진 한국산 주걱잎갯비름(돌나물과)의 분류학적 실체 및 분포)

  • Korean Sedum formosanum N. E. Br. (Ju-geog-nip-gaet-bi-reum in Korean) was first recorded in 1887, 133 years ago. Since then, the species has not been collected and its current state has remained unclear. However, these plants were collected in 2020 and the corresponding taxonomic entity and distribution status were revealed. It is known to be distributed only in the southern region of Japan, the northern islands of the Philippines, and in Taiwan, with Taiwan being the collection site of the type specimen. However, on the basis of the findings of the fourth national natural environment survey, it has recently been established that this plant also grows in the crevices of rocks along the seashores of the Korean islands of Hataedo Island and Sangtaedo Island, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do. S. formosanum inhabiting Korea is a large succulent biennial that can attain a height of up to 65 cm and differs from its congeneric species in having erect follicles during the fruiting period. Notably, among the Korean Sedum species, S. formosanum is most similar to S. tosaense, although it can be distinguished from this species with respect to its monomorphic leaves that have rounded apices, and it also bears separate flowering and sterile stems. In this paper, we present a description and photographs of the Korean S. formosanum, indicate the differences between this and related species, and provide a key to related taxa.

Assessment of Temperature Reduction and Heat Budget of Extensive Modular Green Roof System (경량모듈형 옥상녹화시스템의 온도저감 및 열수지 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate temperature reduction and heat budget of extensive modular green roof planted with Sedum sarmentosum and Zoysia japonica. Plant height and green coverage were measured as plant growth. Temperature, net radiation and evapotranspiration of concrete surface, green roof surface, in-soil and bottom were measured from August 2 to August 3, 2012 (48 hours). On 3 P.M., August 3, 2012, when air temperature was the highest ($34.6^{\circ}C$), concrete surface temperature was highest ($57.5^{\circ}C$), followed by surface temperature of Sedum sarmentosum ($40.1^{\circ}C$) and Zoysia japonica ($38.3^{\circ}C$), which proved temperature reduction effect of green roof. Temperature reduction effect of green roof was also shown inside green roof soil, and bottom of green roof. It was found that Zoysia japonica was more effective in temperature reduction than Sedum sarmentosum. Compared with the case of concrete surface, the highest temperature of green roof surface was observed approximately 2 hours delayed. Plant species, temperature and soil moisture were found to have impact on surface temperature reduction. Plant species, air temperature, soil moisture and green roof surface temperature were found to have impact on temperature reduction in green roof bottom. As results of heat budget analysis, sensible heat was highest on concrete surface and was found to be reduced by green roof. Latent heat flux of Zoysia japonica was higher than that of Sedum sarmentosum, which implied that Zoysia japonica was more effective to improve thermal environment for green roof than Sedum sarmentosum.

An unrecorded species in Korean flora: Sedum tosaense Makino (Crassulaceae) (한국산 미기록 식물: 주걱비름 (돌나물과))

  • Sedum tosaense Makino (Crassulaceae), an unrecorded species in Korean flora, was collected from parasitic crater, Sangumburi in Jocheon-eup Bukjeju-gun, Jeju-do. This species is most similar to S. bulbiferum and S. orizifolium, but differs in some substantial characters. S. tosaense is perennial and stoloniferous herb with bulbils on stems, while S. bulbiferum is annual or biennial herb without bulbils in leaf axil. In addition, S. tosaense has leaves emarginate at apex whereas S. bulbiferum has leaves somewhat uneven at apex. the leaves of S. tosaense are conspicuously flattened and spatulate in shape at the stem without flowers, but those of S. orizifolium, are terete or slightly flattened and linear to narrowly oblong in shape.

A Palynotaxonomic Study of the Korean Crassulaceae (한국산 돌나물과의 화분분류학적 연구)

  • Pollen morphology of four genera, 22 species of Korean Crassulaceae has been examined with light and scanning electron microscopy. The presence/absence of the aperture margo and granules was useful characters to clarify the generic boundaries, and the shapes of the streate were significant to delineate taxonomic relationships within the genus Sedum. The pollen grains of Korean Crassulaceae were small and medium in size. Hylotelephium viviparum has the smallest pollen grains, and H. viridescens the largest. The pollen grains are tricolporate, circular in polar view and were prolate to prolate-spheroidal in equatorial shape. Korean Crassulaceae species have striate grains. The close pollen morphological relationships among Hylotelephium, Meterostachys and Orostachys species were concordant to the results based on the previous molecular and morphological studies. The results of the clustering analysis using pollen characters support the segregation of Sedum sensu lato which has been proposed by the previous authors. Within the genus Sedum, S. kamtschatium is closely related to S. middendorffianum with granules on the surface of the pollen grains. Sedum polytrichoides, a member of the Sedum, was clustered to the species of the Meterostachys, Hylotelephium and Orostachys, and needs to reexamine the taxonomic status. O. malacophyllus collected at Chungdong-Jin was significantly differ from the same species from Gampo in pollen and morphological characters.

A Taxonomic Study on Sedum Section Telephium in Korea (한국산 돌나물속 Telephium 절 식물의 분류학적 연구)

  • This study was attempted to clarify the taxonomic problems that have been raised up to now in the study o section Telephium, genus, Sedum: the delimitation of taxa belong to Telephium group, their relationship, and nomenclatural confusion and the rank of Telephium group. Specimens were collected at 19 sites in Korea. The habitat, distribution, external morphological characters of habit, leaf shape, phyllotaxy, inflorescence, color of floral organs, floral formula, carpel, capsule, and micro-characters of pollen, seed coat, stigma and anther with SEM were examined. Through this study, the following results were obtained. The delimitation of taxa that belong to section Telephium in Korea and their relationship Nomenclatural errors were corrected. In S. rotundifolium Lee, species epithet“rotundifolium”is later homonym of s. rothundifolium Lamarck, so corrected to S. duckbongii Chung and Kim by article 64 of ICBN. Phyllotaxy was elucidated to meaningless, character in sect. Telephium. S. taquetii was a separate species from S. viridescens and not of its synonym. S. alboroseum Baker in Korea was S. erythrostictum sensu Master not of S. erythrostictum Miquel. By this study , taxa of sect. Telephium in Korea were arranged to 7 species. Considering interspecific relationship of sect. Telephium, S. duckbongii and S. alboroseum are considered to be more advanced forms and S. viridescens, S. taquetii, and S. viviparum to be more primitive forms among 7 species.

A Selection of Korean Native Sedum spp. for Evergreen Ground Covers of the Central Districts of Korea (중부지방 상록지피용 기린초 속의 조경용 소재 선발)

  • Sedum takesimenses among the Korean Native Genus Sedum was selected as evergreen ground covers during winter in the central districts of Korea. In order to obtain basic information for production as a pot flower with good quality, the effects of pinching frequencies on growth and flowering of S. takesimense were investigated. S. takesimense plant height became much shorter and numbers of lateral shoots were increased with increased pinching. Shoots of S. takesimense treated with 30% pinching during 2004 and 2005 showed greater length and less number of lateral shoots than those with 60% pinching. Leaves of S. takesimense treated with 70% shading showed a dark green color and had a longer shoot length and a lower number of shoots than cultivation under full sunlight. Therefore, Korean native S. takesimense will be utilized as ground cover treated with 70% shading or under a tree. Therefore, S. takesimense will be promising as ground cover materials in the central districts of Korea.

Flora of Songni Mountain and Its Phytogeographical Interpretation (속리산의 식물상 및 식물지리학적 해석)

  • In the present field study, the number of woody flora of Mt. Songni were summarized as 44 families, 89 generas, 140 species, 10 varities and 2 forms. Also, the flora among inland areas such as Mt. Paektu, Mt. Sorak, Mt. Songni, and Mt. Chiri, and insular areas, such as Oyoujong Island. Tokjok Archipelago, Kok-unsan Archipelago and Cheju Island, were compared, respectively, in order to interpret the characteristics of distribution patterns of the flora of this area. The flora of Mt. Songni were characterized as similar to the flora of Mt. Sorak, and also with that of Mt. Chiri. It was interpreted both the northern types of plants such as Aceraceae, Araliaceae, Fagaceae, Tiliaceae and Ulmaceae and the southern types of plants such as Celastraceae, Convolvulaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Rhamnaceae, Solanaceae, Crassulaceae and Urticaceae were fluxed considerably into this region.

On the Types of Abnormal Stomata in Crassulaceae (돌나물과(Crassulaceae)의 비정상 기공 유형에 관하여)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the types and frequency of abnormal stomata in Crassulaceae. We observed the surface of the leaves on twenty four species involved five varieties belonging to eight genera of Crassulaceae. Nineteen types of abnormal stomata were found in the families. Among them three types such as the single guard cell, the aborted stomata, and the single-aborted guard cell were highly observed from nineteen to twenty four species, and two types of the overlapped-thickening guard cells and the arrested stomata exhibited commonly from seven to thirteen species. The another types of them rarely occurred from one to five species. Most of abnormal stomata were found in S. alboroseum, P. chinense and S. sarmentosum, and a few types of them were observed in the other species. The three types of the ballooning guard cells, the cross cleaved stomata, and the fused pore stomata were first reported here in the seed plants. It was thought that the abnormal stomata were formed by the result of degeneration and abnormal development of normal stomata.

Genetic and Morphological Relationship among Korean Hylotelephium Species(Crassulaceae) (한국산 꿩의비름속(돌나물과) 식물의 유전적, 형태적 유연관계)

  • Genetic and morphological studies using morphological and isozymic data from 20 populations of 6 Korea Hylotelephium were conducted to resolve the species relationships and the origin of polyploid species. The results of morphological studies suggest that triploid H. viviparum is closely related to H. verticillatum, and the high frequency alleles of two species were very similar each other in isozyme analyses. Unique fixation of $PGI-1^b$ in two species supports that H. verticillatum should be the diploid ancestor of H. viviparum. However, a unique $ALD-1^c$ allele is present in H. viviparum, and the lack of the common alleles of H. erythrostictum and H. spectabile in this species eliminated them from the candidates of another tetraploid ancestor of H. viviparum. Based on the high morphological and genetic similarities, our results supported that the Korea endemic H. viridescens might be originated from the H. erythrostictum or share a common ancestor with it. Besides, H. ussuriense is closely related with H. erythrostictum and H. viridescens.
