  • Fish generates thrust with a compliant fin which is known to increase the efficiency. In this paper, the performance of a robotic dolphin, the velocity and the stability, was improved using an optimal compliant caudal fin under certain oscillating frequency. Optimal compliance of the caudal fin exists that maximizes the thrust at a certain oscillating frequency. Four different compliant fins were used to find the optimal compliance of the caudal fin at a certain frequency using the half-pi phase delay condition. The swimming results show that the optimal compliant fin increases the velocity of the robotic fish. The compliance of the caudal fin was also shown to improve the stability of the robotic fish. A reactive motion at the head of the robotic dolphin causes fluctuation of the caudal fin. This phenomenon increases with the oscillating frequency. However, compliant fin reduced this fluctuation and increased the stability.

  • A 14-year-old female Gill's bottle-nosed dolphin died after having 1 month history of depression, anorexia, and respiratory insufficiency. At necropsy, numerous well-demarcated tan firm nodules in variable sizes ranging from 2 m to 3 cm in diameter were scattered throughout the lung lobes. Histologically, the pulmonary nodules formed typical granulomatous inflammation. Center of the granulomatous foci consisted of necrotic center with gram positive cocci surrounded by eosinophilic Splendore-Hoeppli material then by macrophages, epithelioid cells, multinucleated giant cells, a few lymphocytes and fibroblasts. The is the first report of pulmonary botryomycosis in dolphin in Korea.

  • Cutaneous injuries stung by jellyfish are not uncommon in human exposed to marine environments. Most of the cases occur to scuba divers, fishermen, and travelers swimming at the beach. The symptoms vary from mild dermatosis to fatal systemic reaction. Some group of jellyfish like Atlantic Portuguese man-of-war (Physalia physalis) provokes acute severe skin injuries with systemic symptoms of nausea, bradycardia, and rarely anaphylaxis. But it is unusual case that allergic dermatitis caused by Scyphistoma which is polyp stage of jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) happened to zoo keepers working at indoor dolphin pool. This case report is about dermatosis with symptoms such as painful, irritant, itching, and erupted skin lesions on the neck and face of zoo keepers working at dolphinarium in Seoul zoo, Korea.

  • As a part of theoretical and experimental research works for the prediction and improvement of ship's maneuvering performance, an experimental study for the optimum rudder design has been carried out. Largely, this study is composed of the investigations on three major characteristics which determine rudder performance, that is, the investigations on section shape, planform and aspect ratio, and the investigation on the special section shapes. Some practically useful design directions and conclusion for each characteristic have been derived through this study. Among special section shapes, dolphin-tail type section shape has shown a possibility of significantly improving rudder performance if utilized as the section of rudders.

  • Biostratigraphic and paleoenvironmental analyses are carried out on cutting samples from the Dolgorae wells drilled in the Ulleung basin. The clayey, silty, and sandy sediments of the wells yield various microfossil assemblages of relatively good preservation, among which five fossil groups are reported; a total of 97 foraminiferal species of 66 genera, 19 nannofossil species of 12 genera, 86 ostracod species of 41 genera, 107 diatom species of 44 genera, and 124 dinoflagellate cysts species of 45 genera. Based on microfossils the geologic ages of the Dolgorae wells are dated to be from late Early Miocene to Early Pleistocene. Several biohorizons are defined in Neogene successions by the LOD (Last Ocurrence Datum) and FOD (First Ocurrence Datum) of marker species including G. truncatulinoides (LOD: 1.9 Ma) of foraminifera; C. macintyeri (LOD: 1.64-1.60), G. oceanica (FOD: 1.65 Ma), G. caribbeanica (1.72 Ma), D. brouweri (LOD: 2 Ma), R. pseudoumbilica (LOD: 3.66 Ma), P. lacunosa (FOD: 4.2 Ma) of nannofossils; S. ellipsoideus (LOD: 4 Ma), S. palcacantha (LOD: 10.2), C. giusepei (LOD: 14 Ma) of dinocysts; D. seminae v. fossilis (FOD: 3.7 Ma), T. antiqua (LOD: 1.7 Ma), T. convexa (LOD: 2.4 Ma), N. kamtschatica (LOD: 2.58 Ma), T. oestrupii(FOD: 5.1 Ma) of diatoms. Abundance patterns of microfossils throughout the wells reflect changes in paleoenvironmental and sedimentological settings of the basin in relation to sea-level variations. According to these data the large-cycle and small-cycle changes of transgression and regression phases are observed in terrestrial to marine sediments. This high-resolution sequence biostratigraphy established by various fossil groups enabled more reliable correlation between strata and refined interpretation on deposition systems of the basin. It also proved to provide fundamental and precise informations regarding stratigraphic correlation, tectonic events, basin, and depositional history for hydrocarbon explorations, especially in collaboration with seismic-stratigrahic analyses.

  • The Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin Tursiops aduncus commonly inhabits the coastal waters of Jeju Island, Korea. An investigation was conducted using data from vessel sightings and point sightings from land. During 40 days of vessel sighting surveys between 2007 and 2010, a total of 18 dolphin groups were encountered. The overall sighting rate was 0.01 group/n.m. Most Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins were sighted within 500 m of the northern coast of Jeju Island during surveys. Also, dolphin groups were observed 47 times during 109 days of shore-based surveys conducted between 2011 and 2015. The results of a dolphin distribution survey conducted in 2011 were generally similar to the results of previous surveys. However, there were no dolphin sightings from 2012 in Hanllim-eup, in the north-western part of the island, where dolphins were sighted frequently until 2011, whereas dolphin observations increased in the southern part of the island. The mean group size was 35.4 (SD=18.08) individuals. The most frequently sighted group size was 36-40 individuals. To conserve resident dolphins off Jeju Island, long term sighting surveys and environmental assessment are required to monitor their distribution patterns.
