Development of Signalized-Intersection LOS Determination Method Based on Satefy (교통안전에 의한 신호교차로 서비스수준 결정방법의 개발)

  • 신호교차로 서비스수준은, 객관적으로 측정 할 수 있는 여러 가지 기준에 의해 결정될 수 있다. 예를 들면, 지체시간(Delay), 교통사고수(Number of Accident), 교통사고율(Accident Rate), 충돌수(Traffic Conflict), 그리고 교통사고에 노출된 차량수(Exposure)등이다. 지금까지는 1985 Highway Capacity Manual(HCM)에서 소개된 지체시간에 의한 서비스수준 결정방법이 널리 사용되어 왔다. 본 논문에서는 1985 HCM 방법의 중용성과 유용성에 대해 논하지 않고, 교통안전(Safety)에 의한 신호교차로 서비스수준 결정방법을 제시하였다. 교차로의 위험도(Degree of Intersection Hazard)를 예측하기 위해, 교통사고빈도 수가 가장 높은 두가지 교통사고 유형, 즉 좌회전추돌(Left-Tum)과 후미추돌(Rear-End) 예측 모형이 개발되었다. 여기서 첫째, 좌회전추돌 위험도를 예측하기 위하여 음지수 분포(Negative-Exponential Distribution)를 이용한 확률적 모형이 개발되었다. 둘째, 후미추돌 위험도를 예측하기 위하여 연속류 모형(Continuum Model)을 이용한 거시적 모형이 개발되었다. 개발된 두가지 모형을 이용하여 신호교차로 안전도를 예측하였으며 교차로 서비스수준이 안전도에 의해 결정되었다. 본 논문에서 제시된 교통안전에 의한 신호교차로 서비스수준 결정방법은 연동교차로를 제외한 독립교차로에만 적용이 된다.

Phasing and Sequencing Design Techniques at a Signalized Intersection (신호교차로의 신호현시 구성기법에 관한 연구)

  • 신호교차로 운영 최적화를 위한 4가지 변수인 주기, 현시순서, 현시녹색시간, 옵셋 중에서 지금 지 정형화된 지침이 없이 전문가의 경험이나 휴리스틱한 규칙(Heuristic rule)에 의해 결정되었던 현시순서에 대해 다양한 교통조건을 고려하여 최적현시와 지체변화를 분석하였다. 교통조건은 독립/연동교차로, 교차로 기하구조, 비혼잡/혼잡상태, 통과교통량에 대한 좌회전 교통량비(LT/Thru)에 따라 Dual ring에서 구현가능한 모든 현시순서를 대상으로 최적현시를 도출하였다. 분석과정에서 비혼잡상태의 경우 LT/Thru가 작을수록 직진 중첩 동시신호가 가장 우수하게 나왔으며, LT/Thru가 크게 증가할수록 선행양방향좌회전이 양호하게 나타났다. 혼잡상태의 경우는 LT/Thru 15%에서 공통적으로 최적현시가 변하였는데 이는 포화도와 이동류별 녹색시간비율이 크게 변하면서 급작스런 주기 증가에 기인한 것으로 판단되었다. 또한 독립교차로 및 연동교차로 현시순서 분석 결과를 보면 전반적으로 선행양방좌회전 현시와 직진 중첩 동시신호 현시가 가장 양호한 것으로 나타났으며, 양방 동시신호 현시는 대체로 지체가 높게 나타나 신호운영에 비효율적인 것을 다시 한번 입증하게 되었다. 특히 연동교차로에서는 연동에 중요한 요소인 옵셋과 진행대폭(bandwidth)의 상호관계를 탄력적으로 대응할 수 있는 직진 중첩 동시신호가 최적현시로 나타났다. 본 연구는 검지기가 설치되지 않은 고정식 신호기로 운영되는 지방부 및 도시 가로망의 교통류 효율성을 높이는 중요한 자료로 사용될 것으로 판단된다. 최근에는 실시간 교통신호 제어시스템이 활발히 연구. 운영되고 있는데 이 시스템 내에 포함되어 있는 TOD방식의 고정시간 제어(pretimed control)나 패턴선택제어(pattern selection control)에도 충분히 활용할 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

Peak Hour Volume Signal Warrant for T Intersection (첨두시간 교통량에 의한 T형 교차로 신호등 설치기준)

  • 현재 사용되고 있는 신호등 설치기준은 교차로의 형태를 반영하고 있지 않다. 본 논문은 신호 및 비신호 T형 교차로에 대한 현장의 지체도 조사를 바탕으로 첨두시간 교통량을 이용한 T형 교차로의 신호등 설치기준을 개발하였다. 기준설정을 위해 교차로의 평균정지지체 최소화를 평가척도로 사용하였으며 주요 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, T형 교차로의 지체도 모형은 주도로 교통량과 부도로 교통량을 독립변수로 하는 지수함수 형태를 갖는다. 둘째, T형 교차로의 신호등 설치기준은 T형으로 인한 현시의 감소로 MUTCD에서 제시하고 있는 신호등 설치기준과 비교시 타당성 교통량이 높게 나타났다. 셋째, T형 교차로의 신호등 설치를 위한 첨두시 교통량기준 도표를 작성하였으며, 평일의 하루중 주도로(양방향)의 시간당 교통량과 이에 사용하는 부도로의 시간당 교통량의 최대값을 도표에 표시했을 때 접근로 차로수의 조합에 해당하는 기준선의 상위영역에 위치하면 신호등을 설치하는 것이 교차로의 지체도를 최소화시킬수 있다.

LOS Analysis Frame for COSMOS at Isolated Intersections (실시간신호제어 독립교차로 서비스수준 분석 방법론)

  • The level of service (LOS) evaluation method of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) is limited to intersections with pre-timed signal operation, while advanced real-time traffic control systems have been expending in the field. This paper proposes a preliminary framework for LOS analysis at isolated intersections controlled by COSMOS, the real-time traffic control systems robustly utilizing the degree of saturation as basic inputs. The proposed LOS evaluation framework was devised with a pilot model developed to estimate the average cycle length and green times of COSMOS. The validation test showed that the proposed framework was able to accurately project the LOS, which was separately evaluated based upon field data.

  • Micro-simulation models have been recognized as an efficient assessment tool in developing traffic signal control technologies. In this paper a prototype of a microscopic simulation model which can be applied to evaluate the performance of traffic-adaptive signal control strategies was developed. In the simulation process, space-based arrays were appled to estimate parameters of car following and lane changing models. Two levels of link types, a micro-type and macro-type links, were also embodied in the simulation process. The proposed model was tested on a test network consists of 9 intersections. The performance of the proposed model was evaluated in link by link comparisons with the results of NETSIM. The results show that the proposed model could appropriately simulate traffic flows of the test network. The model also produces traffic adaptive signal timings, cycle lengths and green times for turning movements, based on the detector data. It implies that the optimization process of the model produces reasonable signal timings for the test network on the cycle basis.

The Development of an Algorithm for the Optimal Signal Control for Isolated Intersections under V2X Communication Environment (V2X 통신환경에서의 독립교차로 신호 최적제어 알고리즘 개발 연구)

  • This study was initiated to develop an algorithm for traffic condition adaptive optimal traffic signal control for isolated intersections based on the vehicle trajectory data. The algorithm determines the optimal cycle length, phase lengths, phase sequences using the data collected under V2X communication environment every second. In addition, the algorithm utilizes a traditional feature of the actuated signal control, gap-out, using traditional detector systems to consider the mixture of normal vehicles and vehicles equipped with the V2X communication function. The performance of the algorithm was compared with that of the fixed signal timing plan which was optimized with Synchro under a microscopic traffic simulation-based test bed. As a result, the overall performance, including average delay, average stop delay, the number of stops, and average speed, are improved apparently. In addition, the amount of improvement get bigger as the traffic volume in the intersection as well as the number of vehicles equipped with the V2X communication function increase.

Development of Saturation Flow Rate Estimation Models Considering Workzone in the Vicinity of Signalized Intersections (도시부 신호교차로 인근 도로점용공사를 고려한 포화교통류율 산정모형 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study aims to develop mathematical models for estimating saturation flow rates at the stop line of signalized intersection due to Workzones in the vicinity, since the saturation flow rate is the most critical parameter in capacity analysis for signalized intersections. It was found by reference review that saturation flow rates are sensitively influenced by the location of Workzone, the number of lanes, cycle length and effective green time. Extensive microscopic simulation runs were also performed and compared to the those of mathematical models for model verification. Mathematical models were developed based on traffic flow theory and dualizing them by the location of workzones. And then each result produced by changing important parameter values was carefully examined and analyzed. Small but consistent differences in saturation flow rate values between mathematical models and simulations exist. However, the pattern of changes in saturation flow rates depending on each variable was similar.

Signal Timing and Intersection Waiting Time Calculation Model using Analytical Method for Active Tram Signal Priority (해석적 방법을 이용한 능동식 트램 우선신호의 신호시간 및 교차로 대기시간 산정 모형)

  • This research suggests a new tram signal priority model which determines signal timings and tram intersection waiting time using analytical method. This model can calculate the signal timings for Early Green and Green Extension among the active tram signal priority techniques by tram detection time of upstream detector. Moreover, it can determine the tram intersection waiting time that means tram intersection travel time delay from a vantage point of tram travel. Under the active tram signal priority condition, priority phases can bring additional green time from variable green time of non-priority phases. In this study, the signal timing and tram intersection waiting time calculation model was set up using analytical methods. In case studies using an isolated intersection, this study checks tram intersection waiting time ranged 12.7 to 29.4 seconds when variable green times of non-priority phases are 44 to 10 seconds under 120 seconds of cycle length.

A Proposal of Two Signals Roundabout Analysis Method Using SIDRA6 (SIDRA6를 이용한 Two Signals Roundabout 분석방법 제안)

  • Roundabouts face a congestion problem when there are unbalanced traffic conditions, especially during peak times. The congestion at roundabouts results in long delay times and low level of service. Some research has addressed congestion problems of the metering roundabout, however, few studies have focused on the congestion issues of the double signals metering roundabout. This research bridges this gap through analyzing the congestion issues of the Old Belair double signals roundabout in Adelaide. The research proposes a new analysis method based on a four-nodes intersection in order for double signals roundabout analysis to be carried out as follows: firstly, at the modeling stage, a connection of four individual intersections, adjustment of lane geometry, input of directional traffic volumes, priority and phase time set up are proposed. Secondly, for calibration, PFF, critical gap, follow-up headway and extra bunching values have been applied. The results from the analysis show that the new method is able to analyze the delay time, level of service, degree of saturation and allow for further analysis.

  • This study proposes the accident estimation model developed based on the time-series cross-sectional data at 50 intersections in Cheongju. The data were collected repeatedly and accumulated from 2004 to 2007. This study focused on deriving the optimal among the various models including TSCSREG(Time Series Cross Section Regression). Four different models utilizing various elements affecting accidents were developed. Through a statistical test, it was found that the t values of independent variables of the fixed effect models were less than those of the random effect models. Two variables were then found to be positive to the accidents: the number of crosswalks at an intersection and the number of intersections.
