A Study on Millimeter Wave Power Amplifiers Using Spatial Combining (공간 결합을 이용한 밀리미터파 전력 증폭기에 관한 연구)

  • As frequencies increase to the millimeter wave bands the cross sections of wave guides become smaller than a few millimeters, which cause sapatial problems in realization of spatial combining power amplifiers. In this paper we intented to overcome the problem by widening the width of wave guides using horn antenna principles. We designed a widened rectangular wave guide for using in spatial combining power amplifier in 60GHz ISM band(57-64GHz), and we installed Antipodal transition in the widened wave guide, and then we characterized it as a spatial combining power amplifier. For the compatibility of WR15 standard wave guide, we widened the width of WR15 to 7mm using principle of H-plane sectoral horn antenna and then installed 3 slots of back to back Antipodal transition. The designed spatial combining power amplifier showed good characteristics of return loss less than -22.4dB and insertion loss less than 0.53dB. However, as widening the width of the wave guide, additional modes such as $TE_{20}$, $TE_{30}$ in addition to $TE_{10}$ were accurred in the bandwidth of WR15, which restricted the bandwidth and widening of the width of the wave guide.

  • The directivity of crossed waveguide directional coupler is generally decreased according as coupling coefficient of it increase. In this paper, the geomertical parameters of crossed slot pair for directivity improvement is modified and the formulas for design of it are proposed. The crossed waveguide directional coupler designed upon the formulas is fabricated with the WR42 waveguide in K-band. The measured results show that the coupling coefficient is 21.5 dB and directivity is minimum 23.9 dB over the operating frequency from 18GHz to 26.5GHz.

Design and Manufacture of X-Band 10 X 10 Waveguide Slot Array Antenna for SAR (SAR용 X-밴드 10 10도파관 슬롯 배열 안테나 설계 및 제작)

  • The X-band 10${\times}$10 waveguide slot array antenna for SAR is designed, fabricated and measured. The array antenna is designed using the equivalent circuit model based on the field distribution of the dominant mode, TE$\sub$10/, and EM simulation. The method to decide optimum angle of the centered inclined slot(coupling slot) and the optimum of offset of the longitudinal slot(radiating slot) is provided. The designed antenna structure is EM simulated and fabricated. The measured return loss bandwidth is 180 MHz at 9.15 GHz , the side lobe level is below -25 dB, HPBW is about 9$^{\circ}$, and the gain is 25.5 dB. These results are similar to the simulation data.

Design of Mode Transducer between $TE_{10}$ Mode in Rectangular Waveguide and $TE_{11}$ Mode in Circular Waveguide (구형 도파관 $TE_{10}$모드와 원형 도파관 $TE_{11}$모드간의 모드변환기 설계)

  • In this paper, a problem that occurred in the telegraphist equation established by mode conversion method is solved as analysis tapered transmission line is applied to a waveguide taper. After comparing and analyzing the taper function with variant properties, we select on of taper functions not only that is easily designed but also that have good properties. And then we propose the applicant method to design the waveguide taper and deal with the design of mode transducer between rectangular waveguide and circular waveguide. The measured results of scattering coefficients for the mode transducer fabricated with designed data are agreed well with the theoretical results and the validity of the proposed design and analysis method has been confirmed.

  • Transverse electric modes in parallel plate waveguide of which cut-off frequency is much lower than that of $TE_1$ and $TM_1$ mode generally known as the lowest higher order mode are investigated. Electric and magnetic field components of the modes are evaluated with the assumption that boundaries at both sides are perfect magnetic conductor. The existence of these modes are verified by simulation and experimental measurement of parallel plate waveguide cavity. Changed characteristics from the fact that the boundaries are imperfect are studied.

  • In this paper, a S-band coaxial waveguide-based spatial combiner is proposed. The proposed combiner consists of coaxial waveguide, impedance transformer, and finline-to-microstrip transformer. The coaxial waveguide is used as the host of the combining circuits for higher output power and better uniformity by equally distributing the input power to each element. The finline-to-microstrip transformer is designed by using antipodal antenna, and obtained low reflection coefficient by applying the small reflection theorem. The measurement results show the coaxial waveguide combiner has a maximum combining efficiency of 95%.

Transmission Characteristics on Swelling Tolerances of Rectangular Waveguides for Q-Band (Q-Band용 도파관의 내부 돌기가 전송 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper presents the influence on the transmission characteristics of swelling in rectangular waveguides for Q-band. We derived the Green's functions of the waveguide with eigenfunction expansion method. The reflection coefficient of the waveguide with a swelling is calculated by using internal impedance in order to investigate the influence of swelling in the waveguide. In order to check the validity of the theoretical analysis, the calculated reflection coefficients are compared with the measured results.

  • In this paper, we analyze theoritically the propagation and radiation characteristics for elliptical corrugated waveguides. The solutions of wave equations in an elliptic cylinder system are obtained in terms of Mathieu functions of 1st and 2nd kind. The electromagnetic fields in the elliptical corrugated waveguide can be represented by series and products of angular and radial Mathieu functions. By using impedence matching at the boundary between the inner region and the slot region, characteristic equations are derived. Then the characteristic equation is solved for $HE_{11}$ mode which is dominant mode in the elliptical corrugated waveguide and the fields in the aperture is calculated. And the propagation pattern for the elliptical corrugated waveguides is calculated through the field equivalence principle.

Design of a Ka-Band Orthomode Transducer (Ka-대역 직교모드변환기 설계)

  • In this paper, a method is presented for the design of an orthomode transducer(OMT) operating at 21/31GHz frequency bands. A square waveguide is used in the common port while the WR-34 standard rectangular waveguide is used in the straight port. The straight port is connected to the common port via a multi-stage quarter-wave impedance transformer. The side port is coupled to the common port through a slot formed along the center line of the common square waveguide. An impedance transformer is employed to match the impedance of the coupling slot with that of the WR-51 waveguide at the output of the side port. Dimensions of the OMT are iteratively optimized employing the theory of waveguide. The validity of the proposed method is verified by fabricating and testing the designed orthomode transducer.
