  • It is important to understand the vibrating behavior of plate structures for its many engineering applications. In this study, the vibration characteristics of strip plates that have finite width and infinite length are investigated theoretically and numerically. The waveguide finite element(WFE) approach, which is an effective tool for studying waveguide structures, is used in this study. The WFE method requires only a cross-sectional finite element model, and uses theoretical harmonic solutions to assess wave propagation along the longitudinal direction. First, WFE results for a simple strip plate are compared with the theoretical results(i.e., dispersion diagrams and point mobilities) to validate the numerical model. Then, in the numerical analysis, different numbers of longitudinal stiffeners are included in the plate model to investigate the effects of stiffeners in terms of the dispersion curves and mobilities. Finally, the dispersion curves of a stiffened double plate are obtained to examine the characteristics of its wave propagation.

  • Theoretical analysis is carried out for the curtoff wavelength characteristics of rectangular waveguide containing a step-ridge. In order to obtain the cutoff wavelength of step-rigde waveguide, an transmission matriz is formulated by the method of equivalent transverse resonance. The characteristic equation, in which the wavelength is obtainable by the numerical method, is derived from the equation. An approximate determination of the dominant mode fields in step-ridge waveguides at all frequencies has been made. Using these fields, the characteristic impedance equation is derived from power considerations. Analyzing the results of the calculations, the following characteristics are noted. The values of λ /a of TE10 mode increase with decreasing gap lengths and with increasing step width S or S , or both. Experimental results of cutoff characteristics are in good agreement with the theoretical analusis. It is shown that a waveguide within which a step-ridge is placed has a lower cutoff frequency and impedance than empty guide without it. Therefore, the role of a step-ridge guide is to broadening the bandwidth 2 to 3 times more than that of an empty guide of the same demension.

  • In case that an infinite length waveguide structure is connected with a finite length structure, it is required to combine a wave approach for the waveguide structure and a modal approach for the finite length structure to investigate the dynamic response of the connected target structure. In this study, the wavenumber finite element (WFE) analysis is adopted for the infinite length waveguide substructure and a finite element (FE) method is applied for the finite length substructure and then their results are coupled in terms of the impedance or mobility at the connected points between the substructures. As a structural model, an infinite length cylindrical shell with a rectangular plate inside is regarded. These two substructures are connected at the four corner points of the plate, rigidly or resiliently. From this investigation, it was confirmed that the wave approach (WFE method) and modal approach (FE method) can be combined by the impedance coupling.

  • In this study, waveguide-to-CPW transitions were developed for integrating waveguide and MMIC at V-band. The finite element method for numerical analysis and repeated experiments were performed to propose two types of waveguide-to-CPW transition. Using quartz substrate, proposed structures were designed for low loss as well as broadband characteristics. These waveguide-to-CPW transitions showed a good reliability and insensitivity to matching precision, and they could be fabricated with lower cost than that of the conventional connectors. Proposed two types of the structure showed insertion loss less than 1.9 dB and return loss better than 14 dB from 53 GHz to 60 GHz except unwanted resonance region, respectively.

  • A design approach for a radiation element of dual polarization, which can be implemented in the waveguide structure, is proposed. For minimization of the radiating element, the ridged waveguide type is used and for dual polarization, the microstrip type of printed dipole structure is additionally installed inside the waveguide. In order to validate the design approach, $1{\times}4$ array antenna is fabricated and its performances such as return loss, co-polarization coupling between adjacent channels, and radiation patterns are investigated. Theory and experiment are observed to be in good agreement. The radiating structure is thought to be a useful one in an application to the phased array antenna system, in particular, requiring dual polarization characteristics.

  • Design and optimization of a broadband waveguide magic-T was performed for X-Band tracking radars. A multi-stepped conducting cylinder was used to enhance the bandwidth performance of the conventional waveguide magic-Ts. Particles swarm optimization in conjunction with genetic algorithm was employed to obtain the optimized geometrical parameters. The optimized design exhibits low reflection coefficient below -20 dB at all waveguide ports with frequency bandwidth of 12%. The transmission loss and difference are within 0.2 dB and 0.1 dB, respectively. Measured results are also shown to be in good agreement with the simulated results. Finally, the bandwidth performances for five and seven-stepped conducting cylinders are also investigated.

  • A 90-deg phase shifter using corrugated square waveguide structure for 86 GHz band VLBI(Very Long Baseline Interferometry) dual-circular polarization observation has been developed. The 90-deg phase shifter was designed to have two corrugated walls inside the square waveguide so that the vertically and horizontally polarized waves at the output port have phase differences of $90{\pm}3.3$ deg across 85~115 GHz. Measurements show that the return and insertion losses for the both polarizations are better than 17 dB and 0.25 dB, respectively. The axial ratio is estimated to be less than 0.6 dB within the required frequency band.

  • The present study, which is about a ceramic waveguide filter for UMTS, designed a filer using a circuit and structure simulator, suggested a design method at a required frequency band, and developed a waveguide filter, which can be applied at a power of over 50W and be miniaturized, through implementing the design and examining related variables and characteristics. In the results of designing a waveguide filter with the center frequency of 1,950 MHz and 2,140 MHz and examining its characteristics, bandwidth was 60MHz, insertion loss was below 1.0dB, return loss was over 20dB, and attenuation at the relative frequency band was over 60dB. In the results of a power station test, the characteristics did not change and internal temperature was below $30^{\circ}C$ at 50.8W, and this confirmed that the filter is usable at over 50W.
