Analysis of Talus Slope Stability using 2D FEM and 3D Limit Equilibrium Method (2차원 유한요소법과 3차원 한계평형법을 이용한 테일러스 사면안정성 해석)

  • A series of talus slope stability analyses were carried out using 2D FEM and 3D limit equilibrium methods for this study. The FEM analyses on Phase 2 were performed to delineate failure depths based on stress distributions for each slope. The results revealed that the failure surface exist in the colluvium layer of about 3-10 m thickness. Three dimensional models, derived from the FEM analyses and geological field survey, were made for the use in a 3D limit equilibrium analysis. The result shows that all the talus slopes are stable under dry condition, but unstable under saturated condition due to heavy rain.

  • This paper has the aim to track down the viewers' cognitive emotion of how they are interacting with the story of Shakespeare in Love. Human minds have cognitive and emotional flows while plots, characters, and action-ideas are intertwined in the story of the film. This paper especially focused on the analysis of characters' networks with four statistical data pictures in order to schematize the storytelling architecture on how and why Shakespeare has strongly motivated to write a great star-crossed love play, Romeo and Juliet in his very young age. This paper examines that Shakespeare's subject of desire is to accomplish both a true love and a sincere play which can make the nature of love true. The desire of subject is always slipped aside into scattering with "object a." In the film of Shakespeare in Love, the "object a" is a writing process and has a product of Romeo and Juliet as well.

A Potential Efficacy of Rebamipide as Anti-gastric Cancer Drug (위암치료제로서 rebamipide의 잠재적 효능)

  • Rebamipide is a mucosal-protective antiulcer drug, but its mechanism of action in gastric cancer remains elusive. CagA, a major virulence factor of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), is associated with the risk of gastric cancer. CagA protein is injected into gastric epithelial cells and deregulates a variety of cellular signaling molecules. CagA from H. pylori induces phospholipase D1 (PLD1) expression through NFκB activation in gastric epithelial cells, followed by invasion and proliferation of gastric epithelial cancer cells. Infection with cagA-positive H. pylori and expression of CagA enhances the binding of NFκB to the PLD1 promoter. Rebamipide abolishes H. pylori cagA-induced PLD1 expression via inhibition of binding of NFκB to the PLD1 promoter and also inhibits PLD activity. Moreover, rebamipide abolishes H. pylori CagA-induced β-catenin and the expression of a target cancer stem cell (CSC) marker gene via upregulation of miRNA-320a and -4496, followed by attenuation of self-renewal capacity of H. pylori CagA-infected gastric CSCs. In addition, rebamipide increases the chemosensitivity of CagA-expressed gastric CSCs and suppresses gastric carcinogenesis. Thus, it is speculated that rebamipide might show a potent efficacy as chemotherapeutic drug against gastric cancer cells. In this review, we summarizes recent results regarding the novel insights for the efficacy of rebamipide in gastric cancer cells.

A Study on the Variation of the Critical Duration According to Hydrologic Characteristics in Urban Area (도시유역에서 수문학적 특성에 따른 임계지속기간의 변화 연구)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the relation of critical duration according to hydrologic characteristics in urban areas. RRL, ILLUDAS, SWMM, and SMADA urban runoff models were applied to the Seongnae and Banpo watershed and experiment area of the Dong-Eui University. Also, hydrologic characteristics such as temporal pattern of rainfall, rainfall intensity formula, antecedent moisture condition, return period, and urban runoff model were used to simulate the critical duration of the test areas. The results of this study are as follows; (1) The type of temporal pattern of rainfall which causes maximum peak discharge in urban area has resulted in Huff's 4th quartile distribution. (2) The critical duration in urban areas were not influenced by hydrological factors except urban runoff model. (3) Peak discharge and critical duration in urban areas were influenced by the urban runoff model, and the SWMM model using Huff's 4th quartile distribution shows maximum critical duration.

  • In 1944 Hans Asperger reported odd bizzare 400 children who showed autism like clinical symptoms but had higher intelligence and relatively intact speech function. He named these child 'autistic psychopathy'. Since them there were many controversial views about this syndrome. Some regards Asperger syndrome as the high functioning autism variant or preschizophrenic childhood condition or childhood form of schizoid personality disorder. Though there were still many controversy, recently ICD-10, DSM-IV accepted Asperger's syndrome as a distinct subtype of pervasive developmental disorder. The authors reviewed the history and conceptual changes of Asperger syndrome and summarized the interesting recent research findings. In addition, the authors argue that this syndrome has some linkage with autism and schizoid personality disorder and proposed that these is disorders do have common defect in social instinctual development.

  • The analysis of electroencephalographic signal associated with the attention is essential for the understanding of human cognition. In this paper, the characteristic differences between the attention and inattention status in the brain were inspected by nonlinear analysis. The recurrence quantification analysis was applied to the relatively small number of samples of evoked potential having time varying characteristics, where the recurrence plot (RP), the color recurrence plot (CRP), and mean and time-sequential trend parameters were extracted. The dimension and the time delay in phase transformation can be determined by the paired set of extracted parameters. It is observed from RP, CRP, and parameters that the brain dynamics in attention is more complex than that in the inattention, as well as the synchronized brain response is stable in the mean sense but locally time varying. It is feasible that the non-linear analysis method can be useful for the analysis of complex brain dynamics associated during visual attentional task.

Effect of Curvature Dependency of Surface Tension on the Result of Pore-Volume Distribution Analysis (동공부피 분포의 계산결과에 미치는 표면장력의 곡률 의존도 효과)

  • The significance of the curvature dependency correction of surface tension is studied in calculating the pore volume distribution of porous adsorbent from nitrogen adsorption isotherm. That is, Kelvin radii are calculated with curvature dependent surface tension values calculated by Chang et al, and then with these Kelvin radii, pore volume distributions of three porous adsorbents, silica alumina (steam deactivated), silica gel (Davidson 59), and silica gel (Mallinc-krodt Standard Luminescent), are calculated. The results are compared with those obtained by the previous method in which surface tension is taken as constant and also with the others. obtained by the modelless method proposed by Brunauer et al. The maximum point of the distribution curve shift to the larger pore radius, when the curvature dependency is considered. Furthermore, the relative pressure at which capillary condensation commences is by far the lower than that accepted previously. This effect becomes significant as the pore radius approaches to the micropore range.

Flooding Area Estimation and Evacuation Path Analysis (침수취약지역 추정과 주민들의 대피경로 분석)

  • Recently urban area has suffered from frequent flood event by local heavy rain. This study performed flood tests for the Jungnang river using HEC-RAS model. Based on 1m LiDAR data, river geometry data were produced using HEC-GeoRAS. For 100-year frequency flood, 200-year frequency flood, and PMF, flooding areas were estimated. Ten sub-zones of the entire flooding area were identified based on the nearest refugees and used to analyze evacuation paths to the refugees. The results showed that approximately 70% of flooded area were residential, commercial, and transportation areas so that much loss of life and property could be possible. Path analysis showed that the shortest path distances to refugees were about 1000m average. Evacuation warning given at a proper period could minimize loss of life and property. This study provides the guideline for flood evacuation plan in urban area.

Lifetime Estimation of an Axle Drive Shaft by Calibrated Accelerated Life Test Method (CALT 방법을 이용한 액슬구동축의 수명 예측)

  • In this paper, a method to predict the fatigue life of an axle drive shaft by the calibrated accelerated life test (CALT) method is proposed. The CALT method is very effective for predicting lifetimes, significantly reducing test time, and quantifying reliability. The fatigue test is performed by considering two high stress and one low stress levels, and the lifetime at the normal stress level is predicted by extrapolation. In addition, in this study, the major reliability parameters such as the lifetime, accelerated power index, shape parameter, and scale parameter are determined by conducting various experiments. The lifetime prediction of the axle drive shaft is verified by comparing the experimental results with load spectrum data. The results confirm that the CALT method is effective for lifetime prediction and requires a short test time.

An Experimental Study on Performance of the Fixed-type OWC Chamber for Wave-Energy Conversion (고정식 파력발전용 OWC챔버의 성능파악을 위한 실험적 연구)

  • The present paper describes the experimental study on the fixed-type wave-energy conversion system, consisting of the OWC-type wave-energy absorbing chamber and the duct for the air turbine. For simplicity, a screen of wire mesh was employed in place of an air turbine in order to simulate its effects on OWC chamber. Experiments were performed at the towing tank in regular waves with the frequency range of 0.22-0.75Hz. Comparison wish the numerical prediction using a potential flow-based method [4] was made to validate the capability of numerical code. It was shown that the agreements between measured and calculated results are quite good, giving a confidence in prediction method. Simulation of air turbine using a wire-mesh screen was successful, at least in a qualitative sense, to investigate the inter action between the OWC chamber and an air turbine. Results also showed that the effects of a wire-mesh screen on chamber efficiency are negligible, and the present model can be effectively utilized for the practical use in ocean waves with the frequency range under 0.3Hz.
