  • Domestic road and railroad construction have been increasingly growing and for reasons of mitigating traffic congestion, urban plan and refurbishment project, deeper and longer tunnels have been built. The event of fire is the most fatal accident in a tunnel, and it can be very disastrous with a high possibility. In this study, QRA (Quantitative Risk Analysis) which is one of quantitative risk analysis approaches was applied to tunnel fire safety design and the evaluation of QRA cases and the cost comparison of QRA methods were carried out. In addition analysis of risk reduction effect of tunnel fire safety system was conducted using AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and the priority of major factors that could mitigate the risk in tunnel fire was presented. As a result, significant cost reduction effect could be obtained by incorporating QRA and it is expected to design fire safety system rationally. The priority of fire safety system based on risk mitigation effect by fire safety system considering the cost is in order of water pipe, emergency lighting, evacuation passage and smoke control system.

  • Recently, due to adjacent excavation work such as new buildings and common tunnel expansion concentrated around the urban railway, deformation of the underground box and tunnel structure of the urban railway built underground has occurred, and as a result, repair and reinforcement work is frequently carried. In addition, the subway is responsible for large-scale transportation, so ensuring the safety and drivability of underground structures is very important. Accordingly, an automated measurement system is being introduced to manage the safety of underground box structures. However, there is no analysis of structural damage vulnerabilities caused by subsidence or uplift of underground box structures. In this study, we aim to analyze damage vulnerabilities for safety monitoring of underground box structures. In addition, we intend to analyze major core monitoring locations by modeling underground box structures through numerical analysis. Therefore, we would like to suggest sensor installation locations and damage vulnerable areas for safety monitoring of underground box structures in the future.

  • In this paper, we conducted experimental investigation on the field applicability through the verification of reinforcement effect of the steel pipe reinforcement grouting using high strength steel pipe. SGT275 (formerly known as STK400) steel pipe is generally applied to the traditional steel pipe reinforcement grouting method. However, the analysis of tunnel collapse cases applying the steel pipe reinforcement grouting shows that there are cases where the excessive bending and breakage of steel pipe occur. One of the reasons causing these collapses is the lack of steel pipe stiffness responding to the loosening load of tunnels caused by excavation. The strength of steel pipe has increased due to the recent development of high strength steel pipe (SGT550). However, since research on the reinforcement method considering strength increase is insufficient, there is a need for research on this. Therefore, in this study, we conducted experiments on the tensile and bending strength based on various conditions between high strength steel pipe, and carried out basic research on effective field application depending on the strength difference of steel pipe through the conventional design method. In particular, we verified the reinforcement effect of high strength steel pipe through the measurement results of deformed shape and stress of steel pipe arising from excavation after constructing high strength steel pipe and general steel pipe at actual sites. The research results show that high strength steel pipe has excellent bending strength and the reinforcement effect of reinforced grouting. Further, it is expected that high strength steel pipe will have an arching effect thanks to strength increase.

  • Since the opening of the double-track railway for the Gyeongchun local electric train and the semi-high speed train ITX, floating population between Seoul and Chuncheon has rapidly increased. This is attributable to the competitiveness of the railway service in terms of punctuality and safety of operation, mass transportation and low fare. However, many passengers have expressed strong dissatisfaction and displeasure towards the interior noise and its high rate of increase, particularly in tunnel sections. In this study, the interior noise characteristics of Gyeongchun local electric train and ITX were analyzed and compared. Noise levels, frequency spectrum and sound quality indices were compared for the open land, tunnel and bridge. Finally, from the noise levels depending on the location in the vehicle compartment, the noise transmission path was determined and a basic strategy for reducing the interior noise was developed.

  • Road tunnel lengths are increasing. Some 1,300 tunnels with 1,102 km in length had been increased till 2019 from 2010. There are 64 tunnels over 3,000 m in length, with their total length adding up to 276.7 km. Safety facilities in the event of a tunnel fire are critical so as to prevent large-scale casualties. Standards for installing disaster prevention facilities are being proposed based on the guidelines of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, but they may be limited to deep underground tunnels. This study was undertaken to provide guidelines for the spacing of evacuation connection passages and the widths of evacuation connection doors. Evacuation with various spacing and widths was simulated in regards to evacuation time, which is the measure of safety, using the evacuation analysis simulation software EXODUS Ver.6.3 and the fire/smoke analysis software SMARTFIRE Ver.4.1. Evacuation connection gates with widths of 0.9 m and 1.2 m, and spacings of 150 m to 250 m, were set to every 20 m. In addition, longitudinal slopes of 6 % and 0 % were considered. It was determined to be safe when the evacuation completion time was shorter than the delay diffusion time. According to the simulation results, all occupants could complete evacuation before smoke spread regardless of the width of the evacuation connection door when the longitudinal slope was 6 % and the interval of evacuation connection passage was 150 m. When the evacuation connection passage spacing was 200 m and the evacuation connection gate width was 1.2 m, all occupants could evacuate when the longitudinal slope was 0 %. Due to difference in evacuation speed according to the longitudinal slope, the evacuation time with a 6 % slope was 114 seconds shorter (with the 190 m connection passage) than with a 0 % slope. A shorter spacing of evacuation connection passages may reduce the evacuation time, but this is difficult to implement in practice because of economic and structural limitations. If the width of the evacuation junction is 1.2 m, occupants could evacuate faster than with a 0.9 m width. When the width of a connection door is 1.2 m with appropriate connection passage spacing, it might provide a means to increase economic efficiency and resolve structural limitations while securing evacuation safety.

  • The efficiency of railway track cleaning vehicle for eliminating fine particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) in a subway tunnel depends strongly on the structure of the air blowing and suction system installed under the train. To increase the efficiency of underbody suction system, this paper proposes a novel method to use the Coanda effect for the air blower and dust suction module. In particular, through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, the flow control device induced by the Coanda effect enables an increase in the overall flow velocity and to stabilize the flow distribution of the suction module at a control angle of $90^{\circ}$. In addition, the flow velocity drop at the edge of the air knife-type blower can be improved by placing small inserts at the edge of the blower. Those 4 modular designs of the dust suction system can help remove the dust accumulated on the track and tunnel by optimizing the blowing and suction flows.

  • The performance of track cleaning trains to remove accumulated fine particulate matter in subway tunnels depends on the design of the suction system equipped under the train. To increase the efficiency of the suction system under the cleaning vehicle, this paper proposes a novel dust suction module equipped with both air blowing nozzles and a dust suction structure. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis with turbulent flow was conducted to optimize the dust suction system with a particle intake and blowing function. The optimal angle of the air blowing nozzle to maximize the dust removal rate was found to be 6 degrees. The performance of the track cleaning vehicle can be increased by at least 10 percent under an operation speed of 5km/h.

  • The particle matter concentrations in the subway stations should be monitored and controlled for the health of commuters on the subway system. Seoul Metro and Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation are measuring several air pollutants regularly. In this paper, the reliability of the cheap instruments using light scattering method is improved with the help of a linear regression analysis technique to measure the $PM_{10}$ concentrations continuously in the subway stations. In addition, a monitoring system is implemented to display and record the data of $PM_{10}$, $CO_2$, humidity, and temperature. To transmit and receive these measured sensor data, CDMA M2M wireless communication method is applied.
