  • This study applied automatic classification using table of contents (TOC) text for 6,253 social science books from a newly arrived list collected by a university library. The k-nearest neighbors (kNN) algorithm was used as a classifier, and the ten divisions on the second level of the DDC's main class 300 given to books by the library were used as classes (labels). The features used in this study were keywords extracted from titles and TOCs of the books. The TOCs were obtained through the OpenAPI from an Internet bookstore. As a result, it was found that the TOC features were good for improving both classification recall and precision. The TOC was shown to reduce the overfitting problem of imbalanced data with its rich features. Law and education have high topic specificity in the field of social sciences, so the only title features can bring good classification performance in these fields.

  • This study is to find new methods in describing material type as content type and carrier type for the improvement of OPAC retrieval and the embodiment of work and expression of FRBR. It is hard to describe type vocabulary in cataloging because division of content and carrier taxonomy in KCR4 and KORMARC is not distinct. This study is to review the characteristics of material type list in RDA and ISBD(2010), and to examine the various type vocabulary and description methods of videorecording, soundrecording, and cartographic by retrieving KERIS DB. As a result, there is no consistency in applying type vocabulary between KCR4 and KORMARC. Also, libraries use the mix of content and carrier or detailed carrier vocabulary for local use. Therefore, it is need to define the function of GMD as content type, to expand and correct content and carrier vocabulary, and to express both content and carrier type in citation and detailed display. This study will contribute to embody the expression of FRBR.

Recently, these institutions, which are keeping archival materials, increasingly collaborate with each other to provide effective integrated user service in educational programs. The study highlights the importance of collaboration among cultural institutions and analyzes the exemplary cases inside and outside Korea. By analyzing the current educational services conducted by the institutions, focusing on weaknesses and strengths, the authors mention that the analysis results can be referred to them when developing a model of educational services. Based on the analysis, this study finally offers a plan to activate the collaboration of cultural heritage institutions in Korea and develop a model for educational services using the ADDIE model.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a competency-based continuing professional development (CPD) model using the National Competency Standards (NCS)-Library & Information Management. This study specifically examined various competency standards for librarians developed in and out of the country, conducted a survey research and focused group interviews to obtain professional librarians' needs for continuing education and their opinions on the NCS for library professions. It analyzed the contents of the NCS elements and mapped with elements in the five other competency standards for library and information professions. It also scrutinized the current training programs at the National Library of Korea in order to identify their strengths and weaknesses. The results of the study informed the areas to enhance the current NCS by identifying underdeveloped competencies and identified the course contents that should be developed with priorities. The study also developed a modified National Competency Standards for Continuing Professional Development (NCS-CPD). Continuing education institutions can utilize this scheme as a useful guideline to develop balanced continuing professional development curriculums for the practitioners working in various library and information centers.
