  • As makerspaces continue to be introduced in academic libraries in Korea, this study explores potential operating strategies of, and long-term justifications for, makerspaces as digital literacy eduational spaces and services at academic libraries. By examining related literature reviews and case studies of makerspaces, this study analyzes various programs and their respective creation, funding, development, and outcomes, including educational value and library-specific goals such as digital literacy and lifelong learning. This study also considers the perspectives of librarians at academic libraries in Korea who were asked about the purpose, impact, and limitations of makerspaces. Certain common themes appear: for example, it is necessary for makerspaces to resolve challenges related to stable funding, as well as staffing and training of professional librarians assisting with the on-the-ground operation of makerspaces. This study proposes that designing makerspaces for an academic library setting goes deeper than providing a collaborative environment with access to new technologies like 3D printers and laser cutters, and it may be uniquely appropriate to draw connections to libraries' objectives to provide digital literacy education and universities' mission to foster innovation and creativity among students.

Consequently, first, when selecting the theme of the specialized library, the theme ought to be selected to reflect the regional characteristics, history and demographics of the library, and the demand survey of the local residents and library users would need to be considered. Second, when planning the specialized program, the specialized library ought to consider operating differentiated programs based on the program operator who has the expertise to improve the quality of the program. Furthermore, sufficient theme related books and space must be secured, and moreover, the program must be planned in connection with the book collection. Third, the specialized library should be so structured as to ensure that the space may serve specialized themes provided by the library in order to provide specialized collections, services, and information services for the users. In addition, reflecting the needs of the users in designing the space must be considered.

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain librarian's perceptions on their users' library access and its patterns. Interviews with seven library staff reveal physical accessibility issues including spatial relationships between libraries and other facilities such as shopping malls and schools, travel distance, transportation mode, and temporal perspectives of library access. The results from the interviews corroborate the findings from secondary analysis using household travel data. However, interviewees do not have a clear picture of how much their users travel and spend to access their libraries. This is true, even though these factors are critical to analyze physical accessibility. Based on the findings, this study makes recommendations to improve the accessibility of public libraries. Suggestions include the concept of sponsorships with other facilities, the placing of material drop-boxes on the main route, and providing library programs during lunch time.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify characteristics of secondary school teachers' perceptions and experiences of school libraries and to suggest strategies for its' activation. In order to achieve this aim, the questionnaire survey was conducted for 229 secondary school teachers who participated in K university qualification training in 2017. As a result, they recognize that school libraries are an essential facility and that continuous support and investment are needed. They think that the effectiveness of the school library is very helpful for creating a leisure and cultural life and for stimulating reading atmosphere and education, and this perception is stronger at lower ages. The number of school library use of them is as low as once a month, and the purpose of use is mainly for cultivation and leisure. The discomfort of the school library is mostly due to lack of materials and space for them. In particular, they have a lack of knowledge and necessity about the method of library-based instruction and insufficient preparation time and poor materials. Teachers are highly aware of the need and utility of training, and prefer training with peers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop strategies such as remodeling space and increasing collections for their study and instruction, and foster peer supervision so that they can actively utilize school library in subjects management.

  • The cooperation between archives and libraries is necessary for the management of limited operational space and the improvement of work efficiency. "Larchive" is one of the model of cooperation between libraries and archives, so it can be an alternative plan for institutions that face difficulties in collaborating through "Larchiveum" - growing model of cooperation between libraries, archives, and museums. This study presents the recognition of Larchive to university archivists and librarians, and suggests a practical operation plan for cooperation between the archive and library. As a result, "Larchive" was relatively less aware of archivists and librarians, but in the practical point of view, respondents were fully aware of the need for cooperation between archives and libraries. In particular, Larchive was presented as a rational alternative model for both of the groups. And the need for material cooperation can be confirmed through the recognition survey, and the improvement plan for business cooperation can be confirmed through the FGI. Some prerequisites are proposed such as securing a collaborative workplace, assignment of budget and manpower. Through the results, this study presented practical operational plans for organizational cooperation in the form of Larchive, focusing on the perspectives of "teaching and learning support", "research support services", "curation services", "collection and management of school history data", "cooperation for evaluation", and drew discussion points.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of the operation of small libraries in Seoul and to assess the perception of their importance and satisfaction. For this purpose, 861 small libraries in Seoul were surveyed on the overall operational satisfaction, operational improvement, and the importance of operation. As a result, it was discovered that there is a demand for increased operational support for small libraries, enhanced publicity, improved education and treatment of volunteers, improved quality of the book collection, and continuously improved space and facilities. Furthermore, the public and private libraries should be classified to reflect operational characteristics of the operating entity, rather than implementing the uniform budget support and guidance management.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a measurement tool for the quality of information commons. Information commons is a physical, technological, social, and intellectual place where library users can experience various educational, research, and cultural activities. It is recently gaining popularity and several libraries have implemented it to help users share knowledge and interact with each other. It also intends to provide a place for collaboration, learning, and rest. Despite its benefits and usefulness, there is no measurement tool explicitly designed for the quality of information commons. This study used in-depth personal interview, compared prior studies, and conducted a pilot study to elicit library users' perceptions on information commons and factors influencing on the perceived quality of information commons. Groups of initial items were emerged through classifying and clustering key concepts in the data. Then, the validity of the items were verified through a pilot study. The findings of this study will be useful for developing more reliable and valid survey measurement tool.
