  • Cracks affect the robustness of infrastructures such as buildings, bridge, pavement, and pipelines. This paper presents an automated crack detection system which detect cracks in diverse surfaces. We first constructed the combined crack dataset, consists of multiple crack datasets in diverse domains presented in prior studies. Then, state-of-the-art deep learning models in computer vision tasks including VGG, ResNet, WideResNet, ResNeXt, DenseNet, and EfficientNet, were used to validate the performance of crack detection. We divided the combined dataset into train (80%) and test set (20%) to evaluate the employed models. DenseNet121 showed the highest accuracy at 96.20% with relatively low number of parameters compared to other models. Based on the validation procedures of the advanced deep learning models in crack detection task, we shed light on the cost-effective automated crack detection system which can be applied to different surfaces and structures with low computing resources.

  • This study was conducted to develop a test system for evaluating resistance against reflection cracking in shear mode caused by wheel load in asphalt concrete overlaid on the deteriorated cement concrete pavement. Reflection cracking resistance of selected polymer modified asphalt(PMA) mixtures with and without reinforcement was evaluated using this test system. It was shown that the test results accounted for the effectiveness of materials and reinforcement characteristics in terms of the difference in the resistance against reflection cracking. A shear failure life of a certain mixture was estimated with a high coefficient of determination. when the test results were used in a well known prediction model. Therefore, it seemed to be possible to use this technique for predicting a relative service life of on overlay.

  • Micro-cracks with a width less than 0.1 mm in precast concrete panels do not cause structural problem, but they can cause problems in long term durability and concrete surfaces aesthetic, requiring additional repair costs. In this paper, polymer cement concrete is used to increase flexural tensile strength and to prevent micro-cracks due to construction loads on LB-DECK panels. Using 5% polymer-cement ratio, the panel crack moment is increased by improving flexural tensile strength and controlling visible micro-cracks during construction stage of LB-DECK.

  • We have studied orientational characteristics of microcracks in Mesozoic granites and granitic dyke rocks from Seokmo-do, Ganghwa-gun. Microcracks on horizontal surfaces of rock samples from 14 sites were investigated by image processing. Orientations of these microcracks compared with those of 18 sets of joints in Mesozoic granites from Seokmo-do. From the related chart, microcrack sets show strong preferred orientations which obviously are coincident with the direction of vertical common joints. It follows that the formation of macroscopic joints may be the results of further growth and step-wise jointing of pre-existing microcracks. Orientations of microcracks from this result also compared with those of vertical rift and grain planes for Jurassic and Cretaceous granite quarries in Korea. As shown in the distribution chart, the congruence of distribution pattern among microcracks and rift and grain planes suggests that similar microcrack systems probably occur regionally in Jurassic and Cretaceous granites from Korea. In particular, whole domain of the distribution chart was divided into 16 groups in terms of the phases of distribution of microcracks and planes. These microcrack sets in each domains construct complex composite microcrack systems which have formed progressively by different geologic processes and under varying conditions.

  • Cement treated Soil has superior characteristics as pavement-base including strength, curability, hardness, freezing resistance. However drying shrinkage of Cement treated base has been indicated as disadvantage, since reflection crack of surface layer is induced from drying shrinkage of cement treated base. This study propriety about low-shrinkage cement treated base that can control shrinkage of cement and control reflection crack at asphalt overlay & concrete slab.

  • To estimate the effect of fiber volume fraction on first cracking strength and flexural tensile strength of UHPC, flexrual tensile tests were carried out within 5 vol.% fiber reinforcement. The test results informed that both first cracking strength and flexural tensile strength improved linearly as fiber volume fraction increased.

  • Lately, the improtance of smooth blasting is increasing on every construction fields, suchas underground caves, tunnels, and roadconstruction, etc. The main purpose of smooth blasting is to prevent unnecessary cracks from the base rockwhich preserved permanently and is to gain the smooth fracture plane. So, in smooth blashing, explosives with low detonating velocity are generally used. But it is difficult to discuss general theory on the smooth blashing because the mechanical properties of pertienent rocks are difficult regionally. Accordingly basic reserches on the smooth blasting are demended. In this paper, the mechanisms of the smooth blasting on the rocks containing discontinuities were discussd. Firstly, the writer predicted the formation of fracture plane and unevenness using mathematical methodology, the next the model blast tests were conducted in order to simulate the crack propagation modes from the blast holes. Through the research, the following conclusions were obtained l)The blast test results were in reasonally good agreement with the theoretical prediction. 2)The degree of discontinuity has an influence on the fracture morphology.

  • Crack detection technique for concrete structures has been developed in this study. Experimental tests were carried out to detect a surface and internal crack, employing common fiber optic cables and OTDR(optical time domain reflectometry), an optical signal analyzer which is widely used to detect damages at fiber optic cables in the field of optical engineering. While initial concrete crack is ready to occur under cracking force, the occurrence and location of the crack are simultaneously detected to give the same damage to fiber optic cables which have been attached to and/or embedded into concrete in advance. It is obtained through successive tests that the principal factors for crack detection is the covering state of fiber optic cable, and total 4 tests including a preliminary test were conducted and the crack detection technique was verified. The practical usefulness would be expected at crack management and maintenance of concrete structures.

  • In this study, autogenous crack healing and artificial crack healing using electrochemical electro deposition method were conducted to compare in the aspects of corrosion monitoring. Furthermore, the analysis of impressed voltage characteristics, galvanic current and linear polarization resistance comparison, and photo image processing technique were performed for quantitative comparisons of healing ratio. As a result, it was found that, in view of impressed voltage of artificial crack healing, the measured voltage was increased as time goes by. From the galvanic test results of artificial crack healing, the current vs. potential distribution value were formed widely in comparison with autogenous crack healing. In this point, it was shown that artificial crack healing has more eleatic resistance capacity than autogenous crack healing technique. Finally, it was found that artificial crack healing was 1.63 times higher than autogenous healing in view of crack healing ratio.

  • Joint of concrete pavement contributes to improvement of pavement performance by preventing occurrence of random cracking due to drying shrinkage and temperature changes of concrete slabs at early age. However, saw-cutting operations performed prior to sufficient concrete hardening develop micro-cracking of the concrete near the joints, which may develop to long-term distresses due to repetitious traffic and environmental loadings. To reduce the distresses, the joint crack inducers with heights of 100 mm, 150 mm, and 220 mm and the joint cracking slots with various depth were installed at a test section to investigate occurrence of the joint cracks and their behaviors over 5 months. As the results, higher efficiency of the crack inducing and larger behavior of the joint cracks were observed for the taller joint crack inducer. Higher efficiency of the crack inducing and improvement of the joint performance are warranted by additional investigation and reformation of the joint crack inducer.
