The purpose of this study was to investigate the number of climbing plant species habitated in South Korea. Relationships between their distribution and environmental factors were surveyed. Research sites for vertical distribution were Mt.S rak, Mt.Kwangkyo, Mt. Eoudap and Mt. Chiri. The results of this study are as follows: The number of climbing plants habitated in South Korea was 267 species, 95 genera, 41 families. According as latitude lower, the number of climbing plant species increased. And most areas of Korean peninsula except for alpine regions and the northern part of North Korea seemed to be suited for the growth of climbing plants. The number of climbing plant species decreased with its altitude. And it is confirmed that their distributions were limited to the below of 1,500m sea level which was applicable to the area of Kira's warmth index above 45. The species of climbing plants changed with its plant community although at same altitude. The number of climbing plant species was different from the face of slope, and the species diversity became lower at south slope than that of north slope.

This study was analyzed to photosynthetic pigment concentrations and changes of SOD activities on seven species of liana of A. heterophylla, P. scandens, V. thunbergii, P. tricuspidata, C. trilobus, L. japonica and T. kirilowii, and two species of E. arvense and A. princeps of non climbing plants. Concentrations of chlorophyll a and b, total chlorophylls and total carotenoids of P. tricuspidata in 100 ppb ozone site were the most increased. It was the most increased to P. scandens in ratio of chlorophylls and carotenoids, and E. arvense in ratio of chlorophyll a and b. There was difference to ratio of chlorophyll a and b of liana and non liana. At ratio of chlorophyll a and b of 100 ppb ozone site and the control it was more sensitive to chlorophyll a than chlorophyll b, and P. tricuspidata was the most sensitive at comparing with species, and it was more sensitive to liana than non liana. In SOD activities A. princeps was the most increased to 3535.7 unit/g, and P. scandens was the fewest increased to 109.3 unit/g, and A. heterophylla was only decreased to 131.7 unit/g in comparing to 100 ppb ozone sites and the control.
External and anatomical characters such as stem, leaf, ovary, calyx lobe, ultrastructure of stigma epidermis of leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat and pollen were examined on Pterygocalyx volubilis and Tripterospermum japonicum of Korean Gentianaceae. Fruit characters(capsule and berry), absent or not of corona and pollen characters(reticulate and striate) has been used by identification characters of two taxa. But study results, external characters(root, leaf, calyx lobe, stigma, anther), internal characters(calyx love, ovary) and ultrastructure characters(epidermis o leaf blade and midvein, corolla lobe, seed coat) were useful for species identification. Taxonomic relationships among problematic taxa were discussed.
Quercus gilva Blume is an evergreen-leaved tree that belongs to Facaceae and grows in tropical and warm-temperate regions, such as Japan, Taiwan, China and Korea. This study was carried out to analyze the distribution and growth characteristics of Q. gilva in the native range. In Korea, this species was distributed in Jeju Island between 80 and 350 meter above sea level, and mainly in the south-western regions of the island from 100 to 200 meter above sea level. The average height of Q. gilva was $9.8{\pm}1.9$ meter, with most trees 9 and 12 meter tall. The average diameter at breast height was $22.6{\pm}6.8$ centimeter, with the majority between 20 and 30 centimeter. Several coppice shoots ($3.8{\pm}2.1$ pieces) were formed from stumps and inferred by frequent cuttings for use. Almost Q. gilva individuals(96.2%) were covered with kinds of vines(18 species), and evergreen Trachelospermim asiaticum (Siebold et Zucc.) Nakai was major species. The analysis of damage of vines revealed that the most dead branches were found with 9 to 12 meter height of Q. gilva, and the more vines attached, the larger damage to Q. gilva individuals. A continuous monitoring and investigation would be required to preserve this species in their habitats.

This study was carried out to on liana dominating at the vicinity of Onsan Industrial Complex declining P. thunbergii foersts. It was surveyed 16 species, 30 species and 50 species at upper, middle and understory, respectively. It was dominant P. thunbergii at upperstory, and P. densiflora, P. thunbergii, Quercus dentata and Q. serrata at middlestory, and Smilax china, Paederia scandens, Symplocos chinensis var. sinuata, Styrax japonica, Lonicera japonica and Q. serrata etc. at understory. It was the highest importance value(13.2) of S. china among all liana, and in order of L. japonica (11.7), P. scandens (11.5) and Cocculus trilobus (7.7). Number of species, Species diversity, Maximum species diversity, Evenness and Dominance of woody plants at upperstory and middlestory by each survey site were higher in forest areas than industrial complex, but those of understory highly showed at industrial complex, and ratio of liana at understory was high. It showed total 50 species at herbaceous plants, and was high I.V. of Pteridium aquilinum var. latiusculum, Spodiopogon cotulifer, Commerelina commuris, Phytolacca americana, Rubus parvifolius, Miscanthussinensis var. purpurascens and Calamagrostis arundinacea, etc.

We named and described Clematis calcicola J. S. Kim, a new species of Clematis sect. Atragene (Ranunculaceae) found in a limestone area of Mt. Deokhang, Korea. Clematis calcicola is distinguished from the other species of sect. Atragene by 1) sparsely dentate, glabrescent, and subcoriaceous leaflets and 2) smooth and thick sepals.
A naturalized species from Korean flora, Cymbalaria muralis P. Gaetrn. (Scrophulariaceae), is firstly recorded from a well-drained bare field at Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyong-gu, Seoul city. The genus Cymbalaria Hill has not recorded in Korea and C. muralis is easily distinguished from the other species of Scrophulariaceae by palmately-lobed leaves, vine-like stems and cylindrical spur at the base in its flower. The new Korean name is 'Deong-gul-he-ran-cho'. Descriptions, illustrations and photographs of this species are given.

This study was conducted to evaluate the heavy metal content (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) of forest soil and of Lonicera japonica and to understand the correlation in contents of heavy metal between forest soil and L. japonica near the Onsan industrial region. The content of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn was higher in the industrial region than in forest regions, but re, Mn and Ni content was higher in forest regions than in the industrial region. Among heavy metals, the content of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in leaf, stem and root of L. japonica growing near industrial regions was significantly higher (p<0.05) than in forest regions. The content of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in L. japonica tissues showed a positive or negative correlation with those in forest soils. Correlation coefficients of Cu content between forest soil and organs of L. japonica ranged from 0.93 to 0.99 (p<0.01). It was concluded that L. japanica could be used in heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) decontamination of forest soils of industrial regions.
