The effects of duct inlet conditions on fan characteristics and upper wind velocity fields were investigated for two kinds of impellers. As the duct inlet condition, the relative positions between duct inlet and fan impeller and the size of baffle plate mounted on a duct inlet were selected. The 3-dimensional velocity components in flow fields were measured by a 5-holes pitot tube. From the results of measurements, it was found that the size of baffle plate scarecely effect on upper wind flow fields and characteristics of fan. It was also confirmed that the upper wind velocity distributions can be estimated by the potential flow field with large baffle plate at duct inlet.

Turbulent flows are numerically simulated in the three dimensional inlet duct for heat recovery steam generator. The present study is aimed to analyze the effect of a variation in turbulent flow pattern by the change of roof angle in the transition duct. The finite volume based Navier-Stokes equations with unstructured grids are solved to make clear the flow dynamic phenomena. Reviews are made on with the data of path lines, velocity vectors, dynamic pressure, residuals for numerical convergence and so on. The k-epsilon, k-omega, Reynolds stress and RNG k-epsilon are used for generation of turbulence. Two types of roof angle are applied with and without the swirl in the duct. Turbulent flow patterns could be investigated for the optimum duct design based on the computational results.
The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics in the inlet expasion duct of a heat recovery steam generator by using numerical flow analysis. The inlet of HRSG corresponds the outlet of gas turbine exit and the flow after gas turbine has strong swirl flow and turbulence. The inlet flow condition of HRSG should be included the exit flow characteristics of gas turbine. The present numerical analysis adopted the flow analysis result of gas turbine exit flow as a inlet flow condition of HRSG analysis. Because the flow characteristics in the inlet duct of the tube bank is strongly related to the performance of a HRSG, it is most important for the optimal design of HGSG to understanding the flow phenomena in the inlet duct of HRSG. From the present study, the position of breakpoint in the inlet expansion duct should be lower than the reference breakpoint position for the optimal flow uniformity before the tube bank.
The present study has been carried out to analyze the flow characteristics of a heat recovery steam generator with the change of inlet flow conditions by using numerical flow analysis. The computational flow analysis result of gas turbine exit shows that the maximum axial velocity appears near circular duct wall and the maximum turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate exist relatively higher gradient region of axial velocity. The comparison of flow analysis will be executed with change of inlet turbulent flow condition. The first case is using the inlet turbulent properties from the result of computational analysis of gas turbine exit flow, and the second case is using the assumed turbulent intensity with the magnitude proportional to the velocity magnitude and length scale. The computational results of flow characteristics for two cases show great difference especially in the velocity field and turbulent properties. The main conclusion of the present study is that the flow inlet condition of HRSG should be included the turbulent properties for the accurate computational result of flow analysis.

When supersonic flow is through an internal duct, there forms a flow structure called pseudo-shock. Pseudo-shock is a result of shockwave-boundary layer interaction(SBLI) and to simulate pseudo-shock correctly, one needs to correctly anticipate not only the strength of the shock but also the boundary layer behavior as well. In this study, pseud-shockwave structure at a rectangular duct will be numerically simulated using dedicated inlet boundary conditions to obtain accurate solution in terms of its structure and pressure rise pattern.

In order to save energy, a lot of research has been conducted to develop a high-efficiency heat pump. Research to reduce or eliminate the occurrence of frost in the outdoor unit coil is also being conducted at the same time. A constant temperature chamber was constructed that allows experimentation under the same conditions as in the natural state so that frost does not occur in the outdoor unit of the heat pump regardless of the season. In order to verify the validity of the experimental apparatus, a simulation was conducted by dividing the straight length of the duct in front of the outdoor unit in the constant temperature chamber, which is the experimental apparatus, into three conditions. As a result, it was found that a straight space must be secured 10 times the diameter of the duct.

A turboprop aircraft for this study is required to operate at icing condition in order that it performs its given mission. So an air intake system of the turboprop aircraft should be designed and verified not only to provide the maximum possible total pressure at engine inlet at normal flight condition, but also to include an inertial separator which protects Foreign Object Debris (FOD) like ice or snow at icing condition from entering into the engine inlet screen which can cause or lead an catastrophic engine failure like engine flame-out or severe damage. So an air intake assembly incorporating a variable geometry inertial separator has been designed and then CFD/structural analysis for the assembly was performed to see its design results. Then 35% scaled model of the air intake assembly was manufactured and wind tunnel test was done. This paper describes the detailed design results for the aerodynamic design, analysis and wind tunnel testing during the development process of the air intake assembly.

This paper describes a potential-based panel method formulated for the prediction of the steady performance of a waterjet propulsor. The method employs normal dipoles and sources distributed on the solid surfaces such as the impeller/stator blades, hub and duct, and normal dipoles in the shed wakes trailing the impeller and stator to represent the potential flow around the waterjet propulsor. To define a closed boundary surface, the inlet and outlet open boundary surfaces are introduced where the sources and dipoles are distributed. The kinematic boundary condition on the solid boundary surface is satisfied by requiring that the normal component of the total velocity should vanish. On the inlet surface, the total inflow flux into the duct is specified, and on the outlet surface the conservation of mass principle is applied to evaluate the source strength. The solid surfaces are discretized into a set of quadrilateral panel elements and the strengths of sources and dipoles are assumed constant at each panel. Applying this approximation to the boundary conditions leads to a set of simultaneous equations. Systematic numerical tests show that the present numerical method is fast and stable. In order to validate the present method, sample computations are carried out first for the case of a conventional axial flow fan which has a similar geometry as the waterjet propulsor, and then for the case of a waterjet propulsor on which experiments are carried out at KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering).

For an aerodynamic test facility, it is very important to get the precise measurement data of pressure, temperature and mass flow rate at the upstream to the test article. Hence, a new measurement method using a bellmouth and rakes was studied for the large scale system of which the corrected mass flow is between 5 kg/s and 8 kg/s. The bellmouth was designed by ISO standard for 0.5% accuracy, and the rakes were designed by using the equal area method. From the results of 9 test trials, it is found that the Reynolds number of rakes and the mass flow rate ratio can be simply formulated by an one-dimensional equation. The mass flow rate of rakes was calibrated by this equation. By the result of calibration, The maximum error rate was -0.507%, and the average error rate was -0.000274%.
