  • The impervious ratio was frequently employed as a fundamental attribute will be used as a proxy of the total environmental burden in the urban area since it may contribute as much or more on a cumulative basis to the overall environmental condition. This research proposes a comparative evaluation framework in a more objective and Quantitative way for an impervious ratio in the university campus, using the Google Earth. Two university campuses (Kyungpook National University: KNU, Hong Kong University: HKUJ were selected as survey objectives in order to evaluate the potential of Google Earth in monitoring impervious conditions in the campus. The 61cm resolution of Quickbird data combined with digital map realistically identified the major type of impervious surface such as road, building and parking lots in the study area by large scale spatial precision. The impervious zones with persistently high road density and parking space were specifically identified over the KNU campus while the HKC campus was intensively covered by tree, resulting in almost twice (31%). as compared to KNU (18.4%), The methods of characterizing impervious surface used in this study are easily replicable using data that are primarily publicly available, and therefore the collection of impervious coverage data via Google Earth is, therefore, proposed as a practical alternative.

  • A potentiometric sodium-ion (Na+) sensor was prepared using a screen-printing process with carbon and silver inks. The two-electrode configuration of the sensor resulted in potential differences in Na+ solutions according to Nernstian equation. The obtained Na+-sensor exhibited an ideal Nernstian sensitivity, fast response time, and low limit of detection. The Nernstian response was stable when the sensor was tested for repeatability and long-term durability. The Na+-selective membrane coated onto the carbon electrode selectively passed sodium ions against interfering ions, indicating an excellent selectivity. The portable Na+-sensor was finally fabricated using a printed circuit system, demonstrating the successful measurements of Na+ concentrations in various real samples.

  • During the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the western countries with advanced medical technology failed to contain coronavirus. This fact triggered our research question of what factors influence the clinical outcomes like infection rates and case mortality rates. This study aims to identify the determinants of COVID-19 related infection rates and case mortality rates. We considered three sets of independent variables: 1) socio-demographic characteristics; 2) cultural characteristics; 3) healthcare system characteristics. For the analysis, we created an international dataset from diverse sources like World Bank, Worldometers, Hofstede Insight, GHS index etc. The COVID-19 related statistics were retrieved from Aug. 1. Total cases are from 95 countries. We used hierarchical regression method to examine the linear relationship among variables. We found that obesity, uncertainty avoidance, hospital beds per 1,000 made a significant influence on the standardized COVID-19 infection rates. The countries with higher BMI score or higher uncertainty avoidance showed higher infection rates. The standardized COVID-19 infection rates were inversely related to hospital beds per 1,000. In the analysis on the standardized COVID-19 case mortality rates, we found that two cultural characteristics(e.g., individualism, uncertainty avoidance) showed statistically significant influence on the case mortality rates. The healthcare system characteristics did not show any statistically significant relationship with the case mortality rates. The cultural characteristics turn out to be significant factors influencing the clinical outcomes during COVID-19 pandemic. The results imply that the persuasive communication is important to trigger the public commitment to follow preventive measures. The strategy to keep the hospital surge capacity needs to be developed.

  • In this study, we developed an impedance sensor capable of controlling electrode polarization by coating iridium oxide (IrOx) on the surface of the screen-printed carbon electrode. IrOx was deposited on the surface of carbon electrodes according to the number of cycles (0~50 cycles) by cyclic voltammetry. Observation of scanning electron microscope images revealed that the size and number of IrOx particles increased as the number of cycles increased. The changes in impedance responses as a function of the NaCl concentration of the as-obtained sensors were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The sensors manufactured in 50 cycles exhibited the best coefficient of determination and reproducibility, attributed to the well-controlled electrode polarization. We further demonstrated the usefulness of the IrOx-based sensor as a diagnosis sensor for dry eye syndrome by comparing the results of the commercially available osmometer and our sensor using actual solution samples.

  • Examination of two bronze vessels supposedly from the Koryo dynasty revealed that they consist of bowls and stands that are fixed together using rivet joints made of Cu-Ag alloys. The bowls and stands were forged out of unleaded bronze alloys of approximately 22 weight % Sn before being quenched from the ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ region of the Cu-Sn phase diagram. This specific alloy and the thermo-mechanical treatment constitute two key elements of the unique technical tradition called Bangcha (방짜) that has long been established in Korea. The high Sn content ensures better casting and the thermal treatment causes the brittle ${\delta}$ phase to be avoided in forging as well as in services. The experiment on the laboratory Cu-Ag alloys of varying Ag contents suggested that the Cu-Ag system was the best choice of materials for the rivets at the time in view of their color, availability, ductility and low melting points.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the long-term smoking effect of college students who participated in the campus smoking cessation education program and succeeded in quitting. The participants were 30 of the successful smokers who quit smoking after participating in a 36-week and 2nd data from the resulf of the campus smoking cessation program at a university in Seoul from 2016 to 2018. The smoking cessation education program of a university in Seoul, which is completely prohibited from smoking on campus, consisted of smoking cessation education and counseling, once-weekly urine cotinine test, and cessation scholarships. After successful quitting in this study, 51.22% of the participants had quit smoking for more than 12 months, and 48.78% of the respondents included non-smokers. The biggest success factor in quitting smoking was the willingness to quit smoking, and the biggest failure in quitting smoking was stress. The campus-led smoking cessation education program for college students was found to be an effective program for converting into a long-term non-smoking maintainer by habitually quitting smoking.

  • This study, as a study on building platforms for smart campus ecosystem, took an approach that reflected the needs of various stakeholders of smart campus, and focused on functions to help them strengthen their competitiveness and advance into society by focusing on the learning of the most important university student users, college life, and social connection. First, we looked at the theories related to smart campus construction through prior research, and next, through domestic and international environmental analysis and trend analysis, we designed and presented a target model for e-portfolio focusing on core competency development and support system for Industry-Academic Cooperation, and proposed the main point for continuous smart campus development model.
