A modeling system for three-dimensional flow (FEMOS) has been developed and applied to simulate the tidal currents of Asan Bay. The system can consider tidal flats changing with time and uses a finite element method that can adapt coastline change effectively. The simulation results for Asan Bay with large tidal flats, shallow water depth and high tidal range showed good agreements with the observed currents of long-term variations at the medium layer and short-term variations of vertical profiles. Based on the simulated tidal currents, the horizontal distributions of bottom shear stress were calculated and showed close relation with the change of bottom topography. The system can be used widely to study coastal circulation in the coastal region with complex geography.
The oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the foraminiferal species, Elphidirm dtigoense and Ammonia beccarii tepida, of the tidal flat in the Gomso Bay of the western coast of Korea have been measured. This work was intended to study the relationship between oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the foraminifera and present oceanographic environments, and also the difference between two foraminiferal species. The values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C of E. dtigoense varied from - 3.20% to + 0.58% and from - 5.26% to - 0.93%, respectively. The values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C of A. beccarii tepida varied from - 1.11% to + 0.61% and from - 2.04% to - 1.40%, respectively. Mo significant variations in these values occur from the samples among the upper, middle and lower tidal zones except for the one from the upper tidal zone that has extremely low value. The difference between the two foraminiferal species was 0.20% and 1.63% in the average values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C, respectively. The relationship between $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C values was positive in interspecies of two species.

Species composition, community structure and biodiversity of marine benthic community were studied in the intertidal zone of Seoam, Busan. A total of 75 species of benthic marine plants including 4 Cyanophyta, 6 Chlorophyta, 17 Phaeophyta, 47 Rhodophyta and 1 Magnoliophyta are listed. The dominant marine plants were melobesioidean algae, Chondracanthus tenellus, Sargasium thunbergii, Corallina spp., and Phyllospadix japonica and Ulva pertusa was added in summer. Chthamalus challengeri and Mytilus edulis were dominant zoobenthic species in the upper and middle intertidal zone. The algal species diversity index based on coverage was 1.81; 2.25 from frequency; 2.19 from average of total frequency and coverage, and 1.80 from importance value. The algal diversity indices estimated from different sources were quite different. This means that the index value changes depending on the sources used to calculate the species diversity index, indicating how important it is to select the based data and that it is necessary to standardize the methodology when studying later the algal diversity index. On the other hand, the number of species identified in this study has been found to be reduced by 65% at highest, compared with the result of the investigation that was conducted in the coast of Busan.
The monthly variability in marine algal flora and community structure was examined in the intertidal zones of Doripo, and the biomass of an edible alga, Ulva prolifera, at Gaip-ri of Hampyong Bay on the southwestern coast of Korea was investigated over one year from April 2008 to March 2009. A total of 22 seaweeds were identified including five green, four brown, and 13 red algae. Based on importance value, Ulva australis was dominant over the year and the subdominant species were Ulva linza and Caulacanthus ustulatus at the Doripo coast of Hampyong Bay. The vertical distribution in terms of importance values was in the order of Ulva linza - C. ustulatus - U. australis - Sargassum thunbergii from the upper to the lower intertidal zones. The biomass of U. prolifera ranged between 2.4-98.2 g dry wt. m-2, with a maximum in June and a minimal in November. In the field, U. prolifera biomass could be positively related to seawater temperature. However, further research on the association between biomass and other environmental factors such as nutrients and light intensity is required.
In this study, a model was developed for the estimating the locational thickness information of the upper clay layer to be used for the consolidation vulnerability evaluation in the Nakdong river estuary. To estimate ground layer thickness information, we developed four spatial estimation models using machine learning algorithms, which are RF (Random Forest), SVR (Support Vector Regression) and GPR (Gaussian Process Regression), and geostatistical technique such as Ordinary Kriging. Among the 4,712 borehole data in the study area collected for model development, 2,948 borehole data with an upper clay layer were used, and Pearson correlation coefficient and mean squared error were used to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the developed models. In addition, for qualitative evaluation, each model was used throughout the study area to estimate the information of the upper clay layer, and the thickness distribution characteristics of it were compared with each other.

A hydrodynamic numerical model, ESCORT, which enables wetting-and-drying simulation, is developed. The model is verified by applying it at the Mokpo coastal zone together with the MIKE21 model. This paper deals in only 2-dimensional aspects remaining 3-dimensional function for further research. To begin with, MIKE21 model is applied at the whole area where MIKE21 had been applied several times to produce boundary conditions for the main area. Unlike the whole area of uniform grid, main area adopts telescoping grid for ESCORT model and nested grid for MIKE21 model. The results of both model show not only good agreement for the values of water depth and tidal velocity between computed and observed ones, but also plausible wetting-and-drying simulation. However, ESCORT model needs some improvement of efficiency.
We collected fish from the intertidal zone of Seonyu-do Island in order to find out the composition of fish species by using hand net and kick net from March to October 2022. During the investigation period, a total of 2,707 individuals from 9 Orders, 19 Families, 45 Species were collected, and the dominant species was identified as Nuchequula nuchalis and the subdominant species was Favonigobius gymnauchen. By family group, the largest number of fishes in the Gobiidae were 13 species, followed by the Scorpaenidae and the Stichaeidae were 4 species. In this study, genus Clariger was discovered for the first time off the West sea, and it is estimated that fish living on the southern coast are moving northward due to an increase in the water temperature of the West Sea and detailed research is needed.

The species composition and distributional patterns in marine benthic algae at intertidal zone in Masan Bay were investigated seasonally throughout 2007. A total of 42 species, 5 Chlorophyta 8 Phaeophyta and 29 Rhodophyta were recorded, and dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, G. divaricatum, Corallina pilulifera, Gracilaria textorii, and Polysiphonia morrowii during study periods. Especially the vertical distribution of dominant algal species was remarkable: U. pertusa and G. divaricatum were dominated in the upper part, E. intestinalis, E. linza, S. thunbergii and G. divaricatum were in the middle part, and U. pertusa, Undaria pinnatiffda, S. thunbergii, G. amansii, G. divaricatum and C. pilulifera mainly occurred in the low part of tidal zone. The numbers of species were different with seasons and stations; Higher number of species was 38 species in winter, whereas 28 species were the lowest in fall. The number of species was higher at stations 4 and 6 Mile the lower value was at stations 1 and 2 than other stations. The spatial distributional patterns of marine benthic algal composition at each station in dendrogram and MDS ordination were due to the differences of local topography and physical characteristics such as currents and water movements.

Ichnology is the study of traces made by various organisms, which includes classification and description of traces, and interpretation of sedimentary process, behavior of organism and depositional environment based on traces and organism behavior. Ichnofacies, which is defined as the association of several traces related together with substrate characteristics and sedimentary processes, is closely related to depositional environment. Ichnology has been applied to sedimentology (to understand physical characteristics of depositional environment, sedimentation pattern and event bed), sequence stratigraphy (to recognize sequence boundaries and biostratigraphic discontinuities such as MFS, TSE and RSE), oil exploration (providing of many information without big cost) and palaeocology. Preliminary ichnological study on the Ganghwa intertidal flat shows that dominant ichofacies are changing with season and location, suggesting that their seasonal variation would be a good indicator to understand the seasonal change of sedimentary processes, the small- scale change of sedimentary environment and the preservation potential of such units. Ichnology on intertidal flat in western coast of Korea has a great potential to apply its results to petroleum geology as well as sedimentology.

The temporal and spatial distributions of phosphorus have been investigated in the Gomso Bay, Korea. TP, PIP, TOP and DIP in sediment were found 548.8mg P kg$^{-1}$ , 426.1mg P kg$^{-1}$ , 122.6mg P kg$^{-1}$ , and 0.217mg P kg$^{-1}$ , respectively with a decreasing order of PIP>TOP>DIP. Any temporal or spatial trend has not been found on the distribution of TP in the sediment, except the high TP values near the mouth of Julpo-chun. We found seasonal patterns high TOP(28.90% of TP) and low TIP(71.10% of TP) in August, but low TOP(15.63% of TP) and high TIP(84.38% of TP) in November. There were three times higher DIP concentration in August than in November. Such case is probably not only due to the enhanced supply of DIP directly from the decomposition of organic matter from overlying water in summer, but also the released phosphate from the adsorbed particulate matter such as PIP under the low pH and Eh conditions at the subsurface layers of the sediment induced by the active microbial respiration of increased organic materials in summer. Primarily, the source of phosphorous from municipal sewage strongly influenced the early stage of the distribution of all the phosphorous in the Gomso tidal flat. Notwithstanding, through the processes of diagenesis in sediment, water temperature and organic contents probably functioned as the key parameters to control the temporal distributions of TOP, TIP and DIP in the Gomso tidal flat.
