A Study on the Characteristics of Marine Debris in Coastline : Daekwang Beach In Imja Island, Jeollanam-Do, Korea (해안표착물의 특성에 관한 연구 : 전라남도 신안군 임자도 대광해수욕장)

  • A study on the occurrence and movement of marine debris is required for protecting the marine environment and ecosystem from marine pollution. The aim of this study is to show annual production and movement characteristics through analysis for the flow path, composition and the sources of marine debris. This study analyzed the distribution and characteristics of marine debris collected in the region of $100\;m{\times}20\;m$($=2,000\;m^2$) at the Daekwang Beach in the Yellow Sea. During the collection period from 2008 to 2010, the total weight of the marine debris was 1,445 kg in this site. The most marine debris was plastic amounting to 46.5% of the whole collection; the rest were styrofoam(20%) and wooden material(12.6%). The amount of marine debris mused from foreign country observed 155.5 kg, more than 90% of them was plastic came from China such as buoys. Additionally, this study analyzed seasonal change if marine environment to understand occurrence amount change if marine debris. 2009 and 2010 was high occurrence ratio in season that the north wind is very strong and the occurrence rate appeared highest by 40% in the summer(July) of 2008 that appeared westbound tidal current. Overall, marine Debris mused from foreign country was high occurrence ratio in January, May and then November has a lot of quantity secondly. While, occurrence ratio was the highest by 46% summer(July) in 2008, but in 2009 and 2010 showed the lowest rate to 4%.

  • The carton for liquid products are divided into 'gable top carton' and 'aseptic carton'. Currently, these packages are being recycled in the toilet tissue manufacturing process. The recycling of the carton aluminium laminate is the most important problem facing the recycling procedure of the carton packages due to the reduction in quality of recycled materials. The polymer structure with synthetic resins being used mainly in beverage packaging is also one of the important factors for the procedure for its recycling. The objective of this study was to investigate the package material and structure of the carton for liquid products through marketing research and suggest the supplementation in the work processes of production, use, and recycling. The results represent to improve the recycling profit and the quality of recycled materials when a laminated aluminium of carton for liquid products is replaced to the transparent polymer film. The improvement of the sorting and recycling process may help their recycling efficiencies. In addition, the limited use of synthetic resin molded packaging and increase of wood-pulp collection rate will provide the improvement of the recycling profit and the quality of recycled materials.

The Real Scale Fire Test for Fire Safety in Apartment Housing (실물화재실험을 통한 공동주택의 화재안전성 연구)

  • This study was intended to conduct a Real-scale fire test to predict the fire behavior by unit space at the apartment building where a huge casualties and injuries are likely. After setting the inflammables inside the house, the test aimed to identify the fire characteristics to each unit item was carried out. The house was divided into 4 unit space such as kitchen, living room, bedroom and a study for a real scale fire test. As a result, bedroom reached to flashover state in 5minutes after setting the fire, indicating a rapid fire growth such as 7433.3kW of maximum thermal emissivity, 578.6ppm of carbon monoxide, 1.25ppm of carbon dioxide and $1,350^{\circ}C$ of maximum indoor temperature. Particularly, the fire growth was made up to critical temperature which might cause a severe damage to the people within 3minutes, if the fire were not extinguished at inflammable space at the early stage of fire, which stressed the need of early response. The result of a real scale fire test could be compared with the outcome of expanded simulation test and used in predicting the fire spread at the space for different use.

Survey of Consumer Awareness and Attitudes Regarding Genetically Modified Food in Korea (유전자재조합식품 안전성과 표시에 대한 소비자 인식조사)

  • A survey of consumers' awareness and attitudes about genetically modified food and korean labelling regulation entered into force in July, 2001 was conducted from October, 2001 to January 2002. The questionnaires were distributed to 519 consumers who are members of panel survey system of Korea Consumer Protection Board and lived in 7 largest cities of Korea. The consumers were asked about knowledge, concerns of potential hazards, intention of purchasing, and present labelling regulation. More than 85.7% of the respondents had some knowledge on genetically modified (GM) foods. More than 44.9% of consumers relied on the information from the civil activity group but only 9.6% of consumers from the government. The greatest benefit of GM food was thought to be a solution for the food shortage in the future. While, regarding a potential hazard, more than 71.6% of respondents worried about the safety of GM foods. First of all, 52.2% of korean consumer concerned about food toxicity or side effect. 53.2% of consumers responded that they would not purchase GM labelled foods and about 28.0% of respondents suspended judgement on willingness to purchase until they would get more information. Regarding complement field of present GMO labelling regulation, over 45.2% of consumers responded that labelling was needed to be more easily found. Also more than 95.1% of consumers hope to expand a list of mandatory labelling articles.

An Analysis of the Export Performance of Korean Eyewear Products in China Market (국산 안경제품의 중국시장 수출성과 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to analyze the export performance of Korean eyewear products in China market, and derive some implications from the results of the analysis. For the analysis, the statistical data from 2003 to 2013 produced by Korea International Trade Association were used, and Market Share Index, Trade Specialization Index, and Revealed Comparative Advantage Index as an analyzing method were selected. According to the analysis, Korea's eyewear goods market share in China's glasses market was less than 5% on average during the analyzing period amid recording chronic deficits in Korea's eyewear commodities trade to China and by product, contact lenses were competitive, while eyeglass frames, eyeglasses, eyeglass lenses and sunglasses were not competitive. The suggestions for revitalizing Korea's eyewear products exports to the China market are as follows: First, Korea's glasses industry must enhance the ability to develop creative and distinctive product design to meet the needs of Chinese consumers. Second, to meet Chinese consumers preferences, Korea's glasses industry must actively produce new materials and functional products. Third, Korea's glasses industry must improve brand awareness through the continuous launch of new products for the Chinese market. Fourth, Korea's glasses industry must actively promote strategic alliances with domestic and foreign enterprises, and the Hallyu marketing. Fifth, Korea's glasses industry must reasonably improve the unusual products distribution system. Finally, The government must prepare a systematic support system for eyeglasses industry.

Risk Assessment of Mercury through Food Intake for Korean Population (식품 중 수은 위해평가)

  • The present study was conducted to assess the dietary exposure to mercury and the associated risks for Koreans resulting from their food intake. The probabilistic approach in the Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate dietary exposures. Based on several reports regarding heavy metals published by KFDA in the 2000s, 178 types of representative foods were selected and data were collected on the occurrence of mercury. The contents of mercury in foods ranged: agricultural products 0.1 (fruits)-45.4 ${\mu}g/kg$ (mushrooms), 3.7 ${\mu}g/kg$ (meat), and 9.3 (Echinodermata, chordata)-194.9 ${\mu}g/kg$ (fish). Others categories investigated were alcoholic beverages (0.7 ${\mu}g/kg$) and processed food (4.4 ${\mu}g/kg$). The mean and 95th percentile for exposure to dietary mercury were 4.29 and 12.48 ${\mu}g/day$, corresponding to 13.6% and 39.7% of PTWI (Provisional Tolerable Weekly Intake), respectively. Therefore, overall level of mercury exposure for Koreans through food intake is below levels recommended by JECFA, indicating the least possibility of risk, and is less than or similar to levels reported in other countries.

Management Strategy For Health Functional Food Containing Several Functional Ingredients (두 가지 이상 기능성원료를 복합하여 함유하고 있는 건강기능식품의 안전 관리 방안)

  • In this study, we analyzed the database for items reported to Korea Food and Drug Administration as for manufactured health/functional food during 2010. There were 183 health functional food products manufactured in domestic having over 2 functional ingredients (hereinafter, combinational health functional food) among total 7319 products. Among 183 products, there were 177 products having over two kinds of functional ingredient and 6 products were over 3 ingredients. The most commonly used functional ingredients in the combinational health functional food were Garcinia cambogia extracts which were used in 41 products, Octacosanol and Saw Palmetto extract. When we searched the safety information for the pair of ingredients used in combinational health functional food using several database, there were no reports for safety concern. However, as there are still safety concerns when intake various functional ingredients at once, we suggested to enforce the reporting system of adverse event in order to strength safety management of health functional food. With these complement, the safety management of health functional food might be achieved including a combinational products.

Monitoring of Sulfur Dioxide Residues in Commercial Herbal Medicines at Domestic by Geographical Origins (원산지별 국내 유통 한약재의 이산화황 잔류실태 조사)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the residual sulfur dioxide residues ($SO_2$) in commercial medicinal herbs in Korea in 2013. Among a total of 116 samples of 11 different kinds of herbs, 71 samples (11 Kinds) were domestic, and 45 samples (10 Kinds) were imported. The residual contents of $SO_2$ in the samples were determinated by a modified Monier-Williams method. Of the 116 samples, 6 samples (5.2%, 4 Kinds) failed to meet the regulations for sulfur dioxide residues of KFDA in medicinal herbs. Among 6 unsuitable samples, 1 samples (1.4%) were domestic, and 5 samples (11.1%, 3 Kinds) were imported. The highest amount of sulfur dioxide residues was 1546.3 mg/kg (Lycii Fructus) in the domestic samples. Regardless of region, $SO_2$ contents were not found at Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Citri Unshius Pericarpium, Eucommiae Cortex, Forsythiae Fructus, Gardeniae Fructus, Leonuri Herba and Lonicerae Folium et caulis. These data will be used as a basic data for the future legislation on the regulation and control of sulfur dioxide of herbal medicines.

Trend Analysis of Virtual Water Trade at the Global Level for Overcoming Water Scarcity (국제 물거래에 대비한 가상수 이동 추이 분석)

  • 지구온난화와 그에 따른 기후변화로 수자원부족현상이 전지구적으로 나타남에 따라 세계 각국은 물부족 현상을 극복하기 위해 다양한 대처방안을 찾고 있다. 가상수 이론은 전세계적 차원에서 상품에 내재된 가상수를 통해 물을 공급하고 배분함으로써 물부족을 해결할 수 있다는 주장으로서 물부족현상에 처한 세계 각국의 관심을 끌고 있다. 특히 향후 국제적 수준에서 물거래에 대한 조치가 예상됨에 따라 이에 가상수가 국가간에 얼마나 어떠한 형태로 이동하는지 '가상수 이동'에 대한 정보가 필요하게 되었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 지금까지의 가상수 흐름에 대한 정보는 미국이나 일본 등을 중심으로 한 자료뿐이었다. 한국을 중심으로 한국의 관심사를 반영한 가상수 이동에 대한 연구결과는 충분하지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 전세계적 수준에서의 가상수 이동추이를 한국을 중심으로 분석하도록 한다. 분석수준은 전세계적 수준과 국가간 수준이며, 분석기간은 1989년부터 2014년까지 총 26년이다. 분석 대상은 가상수 교역이 활발한 주요 16개국의 11개 농축산물이다. 분석을 위한 자료로는 UN과 세계식량기구의 자료를 활용해 데이터셋을 구축했다. 분석결과 전세계적 수준에서는 콩, 옥수수, 밀, 보리가 주요 가상수 수출입 품목으로 밝혀졌다. 시기별로는 1999년 까지는 밀의 교역이 압도적이었으나 1999년 이후 콩 가상수의 교역이 증가하고 있는 것으로 파악되었다. 가상수의 유형과 관련해서는 녹색가상수의 교역이 청색가상수보다 압도적으로 많았으며, 국가간의 가상수 이동량은 지속적으로 증가하고 있는 추세임을 알 수 있었다. 가상수의 주요 수출국은 미국을 비롯해 브라질, 아르헨티나, 호주 등 농업대국이 상위권을 차지했고, 주요 수입국은 중국, 일본, 한국 등 동북아시아 국가들이었다. 가상수 수출은 미국이 분석기간 내내 우위를 차지하나, 2000년대 이후 중국의 부상이 눈에 띄는 변화라고 할 수 있다. 가상수 수입과 관련해서는 2000년대 이후 중국의 가상수 수입 증가 추세가 두드러졌다. 국가간 수준의 분석에서는 한국과 미국, 한국과 중국, 한국과 호주 등 한국의 주요 가상수 교역국가간의 흐름을 분석했다. 국가간 수준의 분석에서 특기할 만한 점은 미국에서 한국으로 이동한 전체 가상수의 81퍼센트를 녹색가상수가 차지하며, 한국에서 중국으로 이동한 가상수의 74퍼센트가 축산물 가상수라는 점이었다. 본 연구의 분석결과를 기반으로 해 향후에는 가상수 이동 데이터베이스를 구축할 것이 요구되며, 가상수 이동추이의 변화가 가져올 시나리오에 대한 연구도 필요하다고 할 수 있다.

A Study on Estimation Model of Water Footprint by Industry (산업별 물발자국 산정모델 구축 연구)

  • '물발자국(Water Footprint)' 개념은 가상수의 개념이 확장된 것으로 제품 생산과 서비스 전 과정에서 사용된 물의 양을 나타낸다. 따라서 한 국가내의 수자원 총량의 산출 시에 국제 무역을 통해 수출-수입되는 가상수의 양까지 고려하여 국가 물 총합(Water Budget)을 계산한다. 본 연구는 가상수의 수자원 활용에 관한 산업적 차원의 비교를 위하여 산업별 물발자국 산정모델을 구축하고자 하였다. 산업별 물발자국을 산정하기 위하여 첫째, 산업별 용수사용량에 기초하여 물발자국을 산정하였고, 둘째, 단위 물발자국에 기초하여 산업별 물발자국을 산정하였다. 먼저 산업별 용수사용량에 기초한 물발자국 산정은 하향식 접근법을 적용하였다. 국가 산업별 물발자국을 산정한 결과, 산업 전체 물발자국은 약 330억$m^3$이며 그 중 농업계가 연간 118.8억$m^3$으로 전체 물발자국의 36%를 차지하였다. 그 다음은 생활계로 전체의 34%인 111억 4천만$m^3$이다. 축산계의 물 사용량은 연간 2억 6천 7백만$m^3$ 정도이지만, 오염물질을 정화하는데 필요한 물인 회색수의 양이 많아 물발자국이 73억 $m^3$으로 비교적 높게 산정되었다. 공업계의 가상수량은 연간 26억$m^3$으로 타 산업에 비하여 오염부하량이 높지 않아 회색수량이 작게 나타났다. 다음으로 단위 물발자국에 기초하여 산업별 물발자국을 산정하였다. 단위 물발자국과 생산량을 활용하여 산정하는 상향식 접근법을 활용하였다. 1980년대부터 2014년까지 쌀 외 18개 품목에 대한 농산물 생산의 물발자국을 산정한 결과, 전체 물발자국은 평균 90억$m^3$으로 추정되었다. 한편, 2차 산업의 물발자국은 산업연관분석을 활용하여 산정하였다. 산업연관분석을 위하여 한국은행의 산업연관표와 경제총조사의 용수비 항목을 활용하였다. 2차 산업의 총 물발자국을 산정한 결과, 60억 $m^3$으로 추정되었다. 3차 산업의 물발자국도 이와 동일한 방식으로 산업연관표를 활용하여 산정하였다. 산업연관분석을 활용한 3차 산업의 물발자국 산정한 결과, 숙박 및 음식점업에서의 물발자국이 가장 큰 것으로 산정되었다. 이에 따라 Case Study로서 국내 워터파크 대상으로 물발자국을 산정하였다. 자료가 없는 부분을 제외하고 연간 총 840만 $m^3$의 물발자국을 가지는 것으로 나타났으며, 이 중 직접수는 70만 $m^3$, 간접수는 770만 $m^3$으로 간접수의 비율이 92%를 차지하였다.
