A parallel computing strategy for finite element(FE) processing is described and implemented in nonlinear explicit FE code and its parallel performances are evaluated. A self-made linux-cluster supercomputer with 520 CPUs is used as a bench mark test bed. It is observed that speed-up is increased almost idealy even up to 256 CPUs for a large scale model. A communication over head and its effect on the parallel performance is also examined. Parallel performance is compare with the commercial code and developed code shows superior performance as the number of CPUs used are increased.

The computing environment has changed rapidly to enable large-scale finite element models to be analyzed at the PC or workstation level, such as multi-core CPU, optimal math kernel library implementing BLAS and LAPACK, and popularization of direct sparse solvers. In this paper, the design considerations on a parallel finite element code for shared memory based multi-core CPU system are proposed; (1) the use of optimized numerical libraries, (2) the use of latest direct sparse solvers, (3) parallelism using OpenMP for computing element stiffness matrices, and (4) assembly techniques using triplets, which is a type of sparse matrix storage. In addition, the parallelization effect is examined on the time-consuming works through a large scale finite element model.
In this paper, statistical volume element modeling method was developed for multi-scale progressive failure analysis of fiber reinforced composite materials. Big-size statistical volume elements (BSVEs) was considered to minimize the size effect in the micro-scale, by including as many fibers as possible. For that purpose, a mesh cutting method is suggested and adapted into the fiber model generator that creates finite element domain rapidly. The fiber defect model was also developed based on the experimental distribution of the fiber strength. The size effects from the local load sharing (LLS) are evaluated by increasing the fiber inclusion in the micro-scale model. Finally, continuum damage mechanics (CDM) model to the fiber direction was extracted from numerical analysis on BSVEs. And it was compared with strength prediction from typical representative volume element (RVE) model.

Until recently post-processing of finite element model has been heavily relied on expensive graphic peripheral devices. With the aid of inexpensive microcomputers, very economical post-processor graphics program called MICRO-POST has been developed. Model geometry or results of analysis for the unlimited meshes can be easily presented in a number of low-cost graphic devices. The paper presents the procedure obtaining the device-independent graphics, and the structure and functions of the program. It also describes efficient I/O scheme to overcome the memory limitation, and dialogue-type input technique to control the plot operation in an interactive manner. Through the post processing examples for the general purpose finite element programs, it demonstrates the usefulness of the program.
In this paper, damage induced acoustic emission in the composite plate in numerically simulated by using the three dimensional finite element method and explicit time integration. Acoustic source is modeled by equivalent volume source. To verify the proposed method, dynamic displacements due to the elastic wave are compared with the experiment when the fiber is broken in the single fiber embedded isotropic plate. For the laminated composite plates, the results are compared between homogenized model and DNS approach which models fibers and matrix separately. To capture high frequencies in the elastic wave, small time step size and a large number of meshes are required. The parallel computing technology is introduced to solve a large scale problem efficiently.

Parallel sparse solvers are essential for solving large-scale finite element models. This paper introduces the combination of iterative and direct solver that can be applied efficiently to problems that require continuous solution for a subtly changing sequence of systems of equations. The iterative-direct sparse solver combination technique, proposed and implemented in the parallel sparse solver package, PARDISO, means that iterative sparse solver is applied for the newly updated linear system, but it uses the direct sparse solver's factorization of previous system matrix as a preconditioner. If the solution does not converge until the preset iterations, the solution will be sought by the direct sparse solver, and the last factorization results will be used as a preconditioner for subsequent updated system of equations. In this study, an improved method that sets the maximum number of iterations dynamically at the first Krylov iteration step is proposed and verified thereby enhancing calculation efficiency by the frequency domain analysis.
