  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of Korean medicine on an elderly patient with posterior circulation cerebral infarction, chronic kidney disease (CKD), and early neurological deterioration (END). Methods: The patient, who already had CKD, was treated with Korean medicine, comprising herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxa, and cupping combined with Western medicine (antiplatelet, diabetes) and physical therapy. A manual muscle test (MMT) and a modified Barthel index (MBI) were used to observe the treatment effects, and blood tests were performed to check estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN), which represent renal function. Results: After the treatment, MMT, MBI, and renal function scores had increased. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medicine can effectively treat posterior circulation cerebral infarction with END in CKD, but further studies should be conducted.

  • Saururus chinensis powder was added into cookie dough at 5 levels (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, and 6%) by partially replacing equivalent amount of wheat flour in cookie formulation, and cookies thus made were evaluated for physicochemical properties and sensory quality by a small semi-trained panel. Thickness and density of cookies increased significantly with increase in Saururus chinensis powder content (p<0.05); however, those of dough were not affected (p<0.05). The pH of both dough and cookies decreased significantly as the level of Saururus chinensis powder increased (p<0.05). Lightness and yellowness decreased significantly as the Saururus chinensis powder content increased while redness increased significantly (p<0.05). Spread factor decreased with the powder addition (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation indicated that samples with higher amount of the powder received higher scores in terms of taste, flavor, and color but not for hardness (p<0.05). Finally, correlation analysis showed that level of Saururus chinensis powder incorporation was well-correlated with most of the physicochemical properties and sensory attributes studied.

  • Bacteria in the polar region are under strong light and ultraviolet radiation. In this study, we investigated the effects of light on the growth of a psychrophilic bacterium, Sphingomonas sp. PAMC 26621, isolated from an Arctic lichen Cetraria sp. The growth of the strain in the light was lower than that in the dark. Surprisingly, thiamine increased the growth of Sphingomonas sp. PAMC 26621 in M9 minimal medium under light conditions. Thiamine increased the growth of the strain in a concentration-dependent manner along with ascorbic acid. N-acetylcysteine had no effect on the growth of the strain in the light. Thiamine and ascorbic acid also increased the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase. The results of this study indicate that thiamine provided by the lichen symbiosis system plays an important role in light-induced oxidative stress in this Arctic bacterium as an antioxidant. Our study provide insight into the biochemistry and physiology of Arctic bacteria under strong light and ultraviolet radiation.

  • As the music streaming service and the Hi-Fi market grow, various audio devices are being released. As a result, consumers have a wider range of product choices, but it has become more difficult to find products that match their musical tastes. In this study, we proposed a system that extracts the vocal component from the user's preferred sound source and recommends the most suitable audio device to the user based on this information. To achieve this, first, the original sound source was separated using Python's Spleeter Library, the vocal sound source was extracted, and the result of collecting frequency band data of manufacturers' audio devices was shown in a grid graph. The Matching Gap Index (MGI) was proposed as an indicator for comparing the frequency band of the extracted vocal sound source and the measurement data of the frequency band of the audio devices. Based on the calculated MGI value, the audio device with the highest similarity with the user's preference is recommended. The recommendation results were verified using equalizer data for each genre provided by sound professional companies.

Many biological active constituents have been identified from this biomass such as several terpenoids and lignans. In current study, the properties of antioxidant and anti-diabetic complications using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)($ABTS^+$) radicals scavenging, and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) inhibition assays were evaluated by different extraction methods of Ligustri Fructus. Methods : In present continuing research for development of bioactive natural ingredients, antioxidant and AGEs formation inhibitory capacities of Ligustri Fructus extracts using different organic solvents were prepared and the biological potentials were investigated using in vitro bioassays. Antioxidant properties were evaluated employing radical scavenging assays using DPPH and $ABTS^+$ radicals. In addition, the anti-diabetic complications effects of Ligustri Fructus extracts were tested via AGEs formation inhibitory assay. The total phenolic contents were determined using a spectrophotometric method. Results : All the tested extracts exhibited dose-dependent radical scavenging and AGEs formation inhibitory activities. Among the tested samples, hot water extract of Ligustri Fructus was showed the most potent activity with $IC_{50}$ value of $494.8{\pm}6.7{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ against DPPH radical scavenging assay. Also, $ABTS^+$ radical scavenging activity of hot water extract was higher than those of other extracts. In addition, AGEs formation inhibitory effects of each extacts and total phenolic contents were evaluated. Conclusions : These results suggested that Ligustri Fructus can be considered as a new effective source of natural antioxidant and anti-diabetic complications resources.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the effect of complex Korean medicine treatment on decreased mental status in a progressive supranuclear palsy patient with a cerebrovascular accident. Case presentation: The patient was treated with Korean medicine composed of herbal medicine (modified Guibi-tang), acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping combined with Western medicine (a dopamine precursor and an anticholinergic) and physical therapy. The Glasgow Coma Scale, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Hoehn and Yahr Scale were used to evaluate the effects of the treatments. After treatment, Glasgow Coma Scores increased from 9-10 to 12-13, and Mini-Mental State Examination for dementia screen scores increased from 1 to 2. The Hoehn and Yahr score remained at 5. There were no side effects of the treatment. Conclusion: This study suggests that complex Korean medicine treatments may be effective for the decreased mental status of a progressive supranuclear palsy patient with a cerebrovascular accident, but further studies are needed.

  • This research aims to improve the efficiency of production by selecting production configuration with high yield rate and lower error rate based on production history of steel pipe. To achieve this, we identify the properties of various types of MTO(make-to-order) steel pipe products and determine properties affecting yield rate and error rate using decision tree technique. From experimental results, we find out that specification is critical to determine yield rate and error rate of ERW steel pipes with mostly small and medium caliber, and an external diameter range in case of roll benders or spiral steel pipes with mostly large caliber. This research classified and embodied the patterns of yield rate and error rate mathematically by product properties.
