  • Commelina benghalensis L. and Commelina diffusa Burm. f. belonging to Commelinaceae, two species previously unrecorded as Korean flora, were collected in the lowlands of Jeju Island in Korea. Commelina benghalensis of the two species is different from others of Commelinaceae in Korea by having funnelform spathes fused at the proximal margin of involucral bracts and cleistogamous flowers. In addition, Commelina diffusa differ from others by having a three-valve capsule and lanceolate and a base cordate or rounded spathelike involucral bracts. The somatic chromosome number of Commelina benghalensis was 2n = 2x = 22 and the sizes of chromosomes were very small, ranging from 1.25 to 2.70 ${\mu}m$. However, the Commelina diffusa chromosome number exceeded 2n = ca. 100, and a precise count could not be obtained. These species are known to be distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Africa below the latitude of Jeju Island of Korea.

  • The differences of several kinds of physiological responses between Commelina communis (C$_3$ plant) and Sedum sarmentosum (CAM plant: Crassulacean Acid metabolism) when both plants were exposed to water stress for 3 weeks were investigated. In case of Commelina it was shown a clear loss of water to 12% in three weeks, but no changes were observed in Sedum. Total chlorophyll content was also reduced to 57% in Commelina but not clear changes of chlorophyll content in Sedum. were observed for three weeks. In chlorophyll fluorescence experiments Fv/Fm ratios were reduced to 19% in Commelina, but no changes were observed in Sedum. There were very sensitive responses according to the different KCl concentrations and the stomatal aperture of epidermal strips was 12.8 ${\mu}m$ at 200 mM KCl in Commelina, but less than 3 ${\mu}m$ was observed at the same KCl concentration in Sedum. In addition, there were no chloroplasts in guard cells of Sedum, but most plants had chloroplasts including Commelina. From the above results, the ability of water stress resistance in Sedum. could be come from slow physiological metabolism including growth and less loss of water through unique stomatal characteristics.

Hand.-Mazz.]

  • Three isolates of Cucumber mosaic virus isolated from Commelina communis plants showing chlorosis and mosaic were collected in Chungju and Chuncheon, Korea. To confirm genetic variation of these three isolates (CMV-Co, CMV-Co2, and CMV-Co3), we performed PCR-RFLP and sequence analysis. Sequences of coat protein genes of CMV-C0, -Co2 and -Co3 were compared with CMV-Fny and showed 96.3%, 96.3%, and 95.9% similarities, respectively. In host reactions, three CMV-Co isolates induced systemic necrosis in Cucurbita pepo unlike CMV-Fny and CMV-Co, CMV-Co2 and CMV-Co3 observed differential symptoms responses in Physalis angulata and Nicotiana rustica. These results indicated that three isolates of CMV isolated from C. communis have genetic and biological variation.

  • In order to investigate the potential of a Dayflower (Commelina communis L.) extract as an active in gredient for whitening cosmetics, we prepared aqueous Commelina communis L. extract We measured its mushroom tyrosinase inhibitory activity, cellular tyrosinase activity, and melanin synthesis inhibitory activity in B16 melanoma cells. It did not show inhibitory activity against mushroom tyrosinase but showed melanin synthesis inhibitory activity. In a melanin synthesis inhibition assay using mouse B16-F10 melanoma cell, it suppressed melanin production up to 32% at a concentration of $1,000{\mu}/mL$ without cytotoxicity, and also reduced cellular tyrosinase activity to above 50 % above the concentration of $250{\mu}g/mL$. In study on the melanogenic protein expressions, it had especially influence on expression of tyrosinase protein, which is a well-known key protein on melanogenesis, and tyrosinase expression was gradually decreased in a dose-dependent. Dayflower also blocked N-glycosylation of TRP-2, but affected on the expression of TRP-1 rather than on blocking of N-glycosylation processing. Therefore, this result suggests that aqueous Commelina communis L. extract could be used as an active ingredient for whitening cosmetics.

  • This research was investigated to prepare basic data in a study on the copper tolerance of herbaceous plants through the growth rate and the elimination rate dependent on Cu concentration of 6 species; Commelina communis, Medicago sativa, Echinochloa frumentancea, Zea mays, Helianthus annuus and Abutilon avicennae, We examined the germination rate, root and shoot growth of seedling and fresh biomass of 6 species (Commelina communis, Medicago sativa, Echinochloa frumentancea, Zea mays, Helianthus annuus and Abutilon avicennae) painted to Cu contaminated soil (50, 100, 200, 300-CuCl₂/㎏) and control for 14 days. The germination rate of H. annuus, E. frumentancea and C. communis were not affected by Cu concentration. However, root and shoot growth of H. annuus was about 7% of control and the biomass was 35% of control at 300 ㎎-CuCl₂/㎏. E. frumentancea and C. communis that showed good growth rate at higher Cu contaminated soil (>200 -CuCl₂/㎏), were the most tolerant plant to Cu concentration. Especially, E. frumentancea eliminated over 30% of Cu in soil and the amount of Cu uptake increased with increasing Cu concentration; 1,020㎎ Cu per 1 ㎏ of soil at 300 ㎎-CuCl₂/㎏. From these results, we concluded that E. frumentancea would be used for phytoremediation.

  • The effect of $Cd^2+$ on chlorophyll content, water potentials, ion transport, photosynthesis, stomatal apertures and $Cd^2+$ accumulation of organs in Commelina communis was investigated. 3-weeks old Commelina. communis was transferred to and grown in Hoagland solution in the presence or absence of 5 mM $Cd^2+$ for 4 days. $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in all parts of the organs including leaves, roots and stem. The proximity from the root and the age of leaf were significant factors responsible for the distribution of cadmium. Most of $Cd^2+$ was accumulated in the first leaf which was the nearest from the root. $Cd^2+$) accumulation in the leaves led to significant reductions in a series of physiological metabolism. $Cd^2+$ reduced total chlorophyll content up to 70%, and changed chlorophyll a/b ratio to 2. $Cd^2+$ also reduced about 20% of water potential. The treatment of $Cd^2+$ showed about 60% inhibition of photosynthetic activity when measured at various light intensity (100-1,000 $\mu$mol $Em^-2s^-1$). Similar effect was found in terms of stomatal conductance. Therefore, it could be concluded that the treatment of $Cd^2+$ decrease or block various physiological activities. • The hypoglycemic effects of Korean wild vegetables : Capsella bursa-pastoris Medicus(CBM) Commelina communis L. (CCL) Calystegics japonica Choisy(CJC) Discorea japonica Thunb(DJT) and Persicaria perfolidata Gross(PPG) in diabetic rats were determined. Sixty male Sprague-Dawley diabetic rats(130~180g) induced by the streptozotocin (45mg/kg) injection into the tail vein were fed either a control or experimental diets for four weeks. The plasma levels of glucose and cholesterol were measured. The urinary glucose levels were monitored. Crude fiber mineral(Ca, Fe, Zn and Cr) and ascorbic acid contents of the wild vegetables were analyzed. The extents of blood glucose decrement in CCL. DJT or PPG fed rats were greater than that in the control group. This extents of decrement in CBM or CJC fed rats were not significan-tly different from that in the control group. The urinary glucose was shown to be negative to Band reagent strip in CCL or DJT group at the 4th week. The plasma cholesterol levels of all the groups including control group were not essentially different. It is suggested that the intakes of CCL or DJT could be useful for prevetive and therapeutic approches to alleviate the hyperglycemic status in diabetes mellitus.

  • Volatile flavor components from various edible portions of Commelina communis L. were collected by simultaneous steam distillation-extraction(SDE) method using diethyl ether as solvent. Essential oils were analyzed by gas chromatography(GC) and combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS). Eighty nine volatile flavor components, including 33 hydrocarbons, 4 aldehydes, 9 ketones, 23 alcohols, 6 esters, 10 acids and 4 miscellaneous ones were confirmed in whole samples. Twenty three components, including 14 hydrocarbons, 7 alcohols and 2 esters were confirmed in leaves. Six components, including 3 hydrocarbons and 3 alcohols were confirmed in stems, and 18 components, including 13 hydrocarbons, 1 ketone, 3 alcohols and 1 acid were confirmed in roots. The kinds and amounts of volatile flavor components revealed different patterns depending upon various edible portions. Relatively greater numbers of volatile flavor components were identified in leaves compared with other portions of this wild plant.
