Lunar Exploration Employing a Quadruped Robot on the Fault of the Rupes Recta for Investigating the Geological Formation History of the Mare Nubium (4족 보행 로봇을 활용한 달의 직선절벽(Rupes Recta)의 단층면 탐사를 통한 구름의 바다(Mare Nubium) 지역의 지질학적 형성 연구)

  • On the moon as well as the earth, one of the easiest ways to understand geological formation history of any region is to observe the stratigraphy if it is available, the order in which the strata build up. By analyzing stratigraphy, it is possible to infer what geological events have occurred in the past. Mare Nubium also has an unique normal fault called Rupes Recta that shows stratigraphy. However, a rover moving with wheels is incompetent to explore the cliff since the Rupes Recta has an inclination of 10° - 30°. Therefore, a quadruped walking robot must be employed for stable expedition. To exploration a fault with a four-legged walking robot, it is necessary to design an expedition route by taking account of whether the stratigraphy is well displayed, whether the slope of the terrain is moderate, and whether there are obstacles and rough texture in the terrain based on the remote sensing data from the previous lunar missions. For the payloads required for fault surface exploration we propose an optical camera to grasp the actual appearance, a spectrometer to analyze the composition, and a drill to obtain samples that are not exposed outward.

  • Lunar exploration program has been prepared with the aim of launch in the 2020's. As part of it, a lunar lander demonstrator has been developed which is the model for verifying all the system, such as structure, propulsion and control system before launch to deep space. After verifying all the system, the demonstrator will be evaluated by flight test. This paper deals with path tracking controller based on thrusters for the demonstrator. For this, first we derive equations of motion according to the allocation of thrusters and design the path tracking controller. The signal generated from the controller is continuous so PWPF(Pulse-Width Pulse-Frequency) modulator is adopted for generating on/off signal. Finally MATLAB simulation is performed for evaluating the path tracking ability and the final landing velocity.

Heat Flux Analysis of Lunar Lander for Potential Landing Candidate Area (달 착륙선의 착륙 후보지별 열 유입량 분석)

  • The thermal environment on lunar surface is more severe than that of earth's surface or low earth orbit because of the long daytime and nighttime due to 28 days of rotation cycle of moon. Thus, analyzing heat flux on lunar lander at potential landing sites is important to determine the landing site in its initial design phase. In this study, thermal model of lunar regolith that can simulate lunar surface temperature was constructed for analyzing thermal characteristics according to the potential landing sites of lunar lander. The heat flux analyses were performed various latitudes of equator, mid-latitude, polar regions, lunar mare and highland. In addition, we also investigated the heat flux of lunar lander when it is landed on adjacent area to hill.

  • This paper deals with attitude determination and parameter estimation problems for a lunar module. For this we first derive equations of motion for the lunar module by considering allocation locations (configurations) of reaction thruster and a reaction wheel assembly. The lunar module is assumed as a rigid body. In order to include the effect of fuel sloshing on the dynamics of the lunar module, we model it as a spherical pendulum for a simple analysis. For estimating angular rates and moment of inertia of the module, we employ an extended Kalman filter and the least mean square algorithms, respectively. Finally we construct a dynamical model for the lunar module by combining all these elements.

  • Evaluation of the possible or probable effects of environmental conditions which are temperature, radiation, dust as well as other possibilities in terms of meteoroids, seismicity, and no global magnetic field has been carried out for wireless communications on the lunar surface in this paper. The results considered in this paper can be utilized as a basic information on making efficient use of the design for wireless communications system in Korean lunar exploration project.

  • An algorithm is developed to generate measurement data of deep space network for Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter (KPLO) mission. The algorithm can provide corrected measurement data for the Orbit Determination (OD) module in deep space. This study describes how to generate the computed data such as range, Doppler, azimuth angle and elevation angle. The geometric data were obtained by General Mission Analysis Tool (GMAT) simulation and the corrected data were calculated with measurement models. Therefore, the result of total delay includes effects of tropospheric delay, ionospheric delay, charged particle delay, antenna offset delay, and tropospheric refraction delay. The computed measurement data were validated by comparison with the results from Orbit Determination ToolBoX (ODTBX).

  • Korea plans to send a pathfinder lunar orbiter to the Moon for the first time in August 2022. And according to the 3rd Basic Plan for Space Development Promotion, the plan is to send a lunar lander to the Moon before 2030. The selection of the lunar landing area can be varied depending on the lunar lander's mission, therefore preliminary research on the lunar landing sites is essential for a successful lunar exploration mission design. This paper analyzed the characteristics of major regions among 14 proposed regions using NASA's MoonTrek based on the data on the candidate areas for the major moon landing proposed sites by the NASA workshop in 2018. And we looked into what kind of future moon landing missions are suitable for these areas. We also looked at the importance of lunar Antarctica area through the recent lunar landing areas of Moon landing countries and Artemis plan.

  • 우리나라는 최초의 우주탐사선이자 달탐사선인 KPLO를 2022년 8월에 발사할 예정이다. KPLO에는 6기의 임무탑재체가 실리게 되며, 이중 4개의 탑재체는 국내의 대학과 정부출연연구소에서 개발하여 달 표면과 주변 우주환경에 대한 과학임무를 수행하게 된다. 이들 국내에서 개발된 과학탑재체가 달 궤도에서 획득한 Data, 즉 과학자료는 지상국에서 수신하여 이를 처리하여 과학연구 혹은 교육 목적으로 활용될 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 태양계 탐사 과학임무로 부터 획득된 과학자료는 과학의 공익성과 연구교류 활성화를 위해서 국제적으로 대중에게 공개하고 있다. 이에 KPDS도 일반 사용자들이 인터넷으로 이들 과학자료를 쉽게 검색하고 다운로드 받을 수 있도록 한국항공우주연구원에서는 KARI Planetary Data System(KPDS)를 구축하고 있으며, 일반에게 공개할 예정이다. KPDS는 단순히 과학자료를 제공하는 것에서 그치지 않고, 이들 과학자료가 NASA에서 개발한 PDS4 표준을 준수하고 있는지 검증함으로써 세계 각국의 타 우주관련 기관과 상호활용이 용이하도록 하여 활용성을 높은 과학자료로 관리하게 된다. 또한 이러한 PDS4 표준 준수여부를 검증함으로써 KPLO 이후 우리나라에서 수행하게 될 미래의 우주탐사 과학임무로부터 획득될 과학자료도 저장, 공개를 할 수 있도록 KPDS는 범용성을 고려하여 개발하고 있다.

Geographic Distribution Analysis of Lunar In-situ Resource and Topography to Construct Lunar Base (달 기지 건설을 위한 달 현지 자원 및 지형의 공간 분포 분석)

  • As the Moon's scientific, technological, and economic value has increased, major space agencies around the world are leading lunar exploration projects by establishing a road map to develop lunar resources and to construct a lunar base. In addition, as the lunar base construction requires huge amounts of resources from the Earth, lunar in-situ construction technology is being developed to produce construction materials from local lunar resources. On the other hand, the characteristics of lunar topography and resources vary spatially due to the crustal and volcanic activities inside the Moon as well as the solar wind and meteorites from outside the Moon. Therefore, in this paper, the geospatial analysis of lunar resource distribution was conducted to suggest regional consideration factors to apply the lunar in situ construction technologies. In addition, the lunar topographic condition to select construction sites was suggested to ensure the safe landing of a lunar lander and the easy maneuvering of a rover. The lunar topographic and resource information mainly from lunar orbiters were limited to the lunar surface with a low spatial resolution. Rover-based lunar exploration in the near future is expected to provide valuable information to develop lunar in situ construction technology and select candidate sites for lunar base construction.

  • 한국형 시험용 달 궤도선(KPLO)에 실릴 과학 탑재체 가운데 하나인 광시야 편광 카메라(PolCam)는 최초로 달 표면전체의 편광 특성을 관측한다. 편광 특성은 태양-달-관측기기 사이의 각도인 위상각에 따라 달라지므로, 다양한 위상각에서의 반복 관측을 통해 달 전 지역에 대한 각각의 편광곡선을 얻을 예정이다. 편광곡선으로부터 달 표면의 입자 크기와 성분 등의 분포를 알 수 있다. 이는 과학적으로도 흥미로울 뿐 아니라, 미래의 달 탐사 임무를 위한 착륙지 선정 시에도 중요한 참고자료가 된다. 여기에서는, PolCam이 1년간의 KPLO 임무 동안 관측할 수 있는 지역 및 위상각의 분포를 소개한다. 또한, 임무 도중 관측이 일시중지되거나 임무 자체가 비정상종료되는 경우 불완전한 관측 자료로부터 편광곡선을 구하는 방법에 대해 알아본다.
