  • One hundred twenty two accessions of 6 species in genus Allium were collected throughout 5 regions of Korea. Their genetic relationship was investigated by using inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The morphological analysis was measured for 6 quantitative and quantified for 1 qualitative trait. ISSR analysis obtained a total of 370 polymorphic bands by using seventeen primers. The cluster analysis of genus Allium based on morphological data could identify three groups. The accessions of Allium belonged to the Allium monanthum clustered into five groups at genetic distance ranging from 0.94 on the base of ISSR analysis. Correlation analysis between morphological and ISSR analysis showed low coefficient(r = 0.036). These markers are thought to be used in research of molecular markers for classification and cross breeding of Allium monanthum and A. grai.

  • Rhododendron keiskei Miq. var. hypoglaucum Suto & Suzuki (Ericaceae) was found in Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, Korea. This species is distinguished from related taxa in Korea by lepidote hairs entire, flower-bud terminal, inflorescences umbel-like racemes, corolla lepidot outside, white tinged with yellow. This taxon was named 'Seom-Jin-Dal-Lae' in Korean based on its habitat. We provide its description, illustrations, photographs and a key of related taxa in Korea.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the biological activities of whole-plant (WAE), bulb (BAE), and leaf (LAE) extracts of Allium macrostemon. The antioxidant activities, total polyphenol contents, and anti-adipogenic activities of WAE and LAE were superior to those of BAE, whereas the biological effects of WAE and LAE were similar. Therefore, the effect of LAE on adipogenesis was further investigated. Treatment of preadipocytes with LAE at 100 g/mL resulted in the inhibition of intracellular lipid accumulation by 49.64%. Consistent with this result, quantitative reverse transcription-PCR showed that LAE treatment decreased the gene expressions of CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein beta (C/EBPβ), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), C/EBPα and stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1). Thus, LAE attenuates the adipogenesis of preadipocytes by suppressing the expression of adipogenic and lipogenic genes. These results suggest that LAE can be potentially useful as a functional ingredient to prevent obesity in the food industry.

  • The essential oil was obtained from the aerial part of Rhododendon mucronulatum Turcz. var. ciliatum Nakai by steam distillation, samples were collected by headspace (HS) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) methods, and the compositions of the oil were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Nineteen constituents were identified from the essential oil: 15 carbohydrates, 3 alcohols, and 1 acetates. Major constituents were 2-${\beta}$-pinene (16.1%), camphene (11.9%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (11.4%), d,l-limonene (9.5%), and ${\gamma}$-terpinene (9.5%). By SPME extraction, seventeen constituents were identified: 13 hydrocarbons, 1 alcohol, 1 nitrogen-containing compound, 1 acetate, and 1 amine. Major constituents of the SPME-extracted sample were cam phene (19.6%), 2-${\beta}$-pinene (18.0%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (17.4%), trimethyl hydrazine (9.7%), ${\gamma}$-terpinene (8.5%), and d,l-limonene (5.5%). By HS extraction, thirteen constituents were identified: 11 hydrocarbons, 1 alcohol, and 1 nitrogen-containing compound. Major constituents of the HS-extracted sample were camphene (25.8%), ${\delta}$-3-carene (24.8%), 2-${\beta}$-pinene (20.2%), d,l-limonene (5.4%), tricyclene (5.1%) and trimethyl hydrazine (4.6%). The fragrance of the essential oil was coniferous, balsamic, and woody, and the $IC_{50}$ value of the essential oil was 0.030 ${\mu}g/mg$ in MTT assay using UaCaT keratinocyte cell line.

  • This study was carried out to analyze vegetation and soil characteristic, and ordination of subalpine forest vegetation of Daecheongbong area, Mt. Seorak. Communities by characteristic in species composition of subalpine forest were classified into Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermani community group, Pinus pumila, Abies nephrolepis, Thuja koraiensis, and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community. The results of the correlation between forest communitie sand soil conditions of Daecheongbong area by DCCA ordination method are as follows: The Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community were mainly found in the high percentage area of total nitrogen, available phosphorous, organic matter in comparison with Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community. The Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community were mainly found in the high elevation area in comparison with Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community. The Pinus pumila community and Thuja koraiensis community were mainly found in the northern and northwestern direction, but Abies nephrolepis community and Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum - Betula ermanii typical community were mainly found in the southwestern direction.
