Exploratory data analysis was carried out by using the long-term wave climate data in Sokcho coastal zone. The main features found in this study are as follows. The coefficient of variations on the wave height and period are about 0.11 and 0.02, respectively. It also shows that the annual components of the wave height and period are dominant and their amplitudes are 0.24 m and 0.56 seconds, respectively. The amount of intra-annual variation range is about two times greater than that of the inter-annual variation range. The distribution shapes of the wave data are very similar to the log-normal and GEV(generalized extreme value) functions. However, the goodness-of-fit tests based on the KS test show as "rejected" for all suggested density functions. Then, the structure of the timeseries wave height data is roughly estimated as AR(3) model. Based on the wave duration results, it is clearly shown that the continuous and maximum duration is decreased as a power function shape and the total duration is exponentially decreased. Meanwhile, the environment of the Sokcho coastal zone is classified as a wave-dominated environment.
We analysed ground motions form Mw 4.3 earthquake around Backryoung Island for the seismic source focal mechanism and horizontal response spectrum. Focal mechanism of the Backryoung Islands area was compared to existing principal stress orientation of the Korean Peninsula and horizontal response spectrum was also compared to those of the US NRC Regulatory Guide (1.60) and the Korean National Building Code. The ground motions of 3 stations, including vertical, radial, and tangential components for each station, were used for grid search method of moment tensor seismic source. The principal stress orientation from this study, ENE-WSW, is consistent fairly well with that of the Korean Peninsula. The horizontal response spectrum using 30 observed ground motions analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). Response spectrum of 30 horizontal ground motions were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that the horizontal response spectrum revealed higher values for frequency bands above 3 Hz than Reg. Guide (1.60). The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the vertical response spectra revealed higher values for the frequency bands below 0.8 second than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (SD soil condition). However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the higher frequency bands.

Low water temperature during the summer associated with the occurrence of cold water zone off Haeundae was studied using the data from CTD observations and a monitoring buoy deployed in Suyeong Bay. Shortterm variability of current was dominant and was not related to the wind. The NE-SW components of wind parallel to the coast contained more than 96% of total variance and could account for major fluctuations of water temperature. Upwelling-response of water temperature was very sensitive so that the temperature began to decrease immediately after the onset of the southwesterly wind. In particular, there were three cases in which SW winds for only two days caused considerable temperature drops. In 2009, four upwelling events shorter than 5 days took place while seven events with periods of 2~18 days were recorded in 2010. During a very intense upwelling for seven days in mid-August 2010, temperature decreased by more than $10^{\circ}C$ in spite of the variable winds. Temperature variability at Gampo, Ulsan, Gijang and Haeundae had similar patterns. CTD observation and satellite imagery showed that the upwelling zone could be extended to the Haeundae-Busan area. According to the wavelet analysis, coherent periods were 2~8 days during the frequent upwelling/downwelling events.

The Kyunggi Bay in mid-west of Korea is a relatively large estuarine system that connects the Han River system with Yellow Sea. Due to macro-tidal range of more than 8 m, the urban estuary shows deep tidal channels and wide tidal flats. Since last 30 years, the coastal development is undergoing, yielding noticeable change in environment. Particularly the tidal flat dynamics are generally accepted as being related with tidal residual flows in this area (Kim et al., 2009). We have estimated the annual variation and vertical structure of residual currents with one-year long observed flows in two major tidal channels of Kyunggi Bay. The moving average method and tidal current harmonic analysis yield nearly the same results on residual flow. The residual flow in Jangbong channel ranges from 20 cm/s in summer to 30 cm/s in winter. It is noticeable that the residual flow in Jangbong channel is flood dominant throughout the year, while the flow in Seokmo channel is ebb-dominant residual flow with current speed range of 20-40 cm/s. Due to the baroclinic response of relatively shallow estuary, significant reduction of energy in bottom layers have been observed, indicating the importance of residual circulation to the tidal flat behavior.
This study explores the effect of mother wavelet in the bivariate wavelet analysis. A total of four mother wavelets (Bump, Mexican hat, Morlet, and Paul) which are frequently used in the related studies is selected. These mother wavelets are applied to several bivariate time series like white noise and sine curves with different periods, whose results are then compared and evaluated. Additionally, two real time series such as the arctic oscillation index (AOI) and the southern oscillation index (SOI) are analyzed to check if the results in the analysis of generated time series are consistent with those in the analysis of real time series. The results are summarized as follows. First, the Bump and Morlet mother wavelets are found to provide well-matched results with the theoretical predictions. On the other hand, the Mexican hat and Paul mother wavelets show rather short-periodic and long-periodic fluctuations, respectively. Second, the Mexican hat and Paul mother wavelets show rather high scale intervention, but rather small in the application of the Bump and Morlet mother wavelets. The so-called co-movement can be well detected in the application of Morlet and Paul mother wavelets. Especially, the Morlet mother wavelet clearly shows this characteristic. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the Morlet mother wavelet can be a soft option in the bivariate wavelet analysis. Finally, the bivariate wavelet analysis of AOI and SOI data shows that their periodic components of about 2-4 years co-move regularly every about 20 years.

The $AlAs_xSb_{1-x}$ step-graded buffer (SGB) layer was grown on the Silicon (Si) substrate to overcome lattice mismatch between Si substrate and $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$/GaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs). The value of root-mean-square (RMS) surface roughness for 5 nm-thick GaAs grown on $AlAs_xSb_{1-x}$ step-graded buffer layer was ~1.7 nm. $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$/GaAs MQWs with AlAs/GaAs short period superlattice (SPS) were formed on the $AlAs_xSb_{1-x}$/Si substrate. Photoluminescence (PL) peak at 10 K for the $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$/GaAs MQW structure showed relatively low intensity at ~813 nm. The RMS surface roughness of the $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$/GaAs MQW structure was ~42.9 nm. The crystal defects were observed on the cross-sectional transmission electron microscope (TEM) images of the $Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As$/GaAs MQW structure. The decrease of PL intensity and increase of RMS surface roughness would be due to the formation of the crystal defects.

In this study, we investigate tidal wave propagation characteristics, and classify regional tidal regime using tidal form number considered distribution of astronomical tide, overtides, and compound tides in the Han River Estuary, Gyeonggi Bay. The characteristics of the tidal wave propagation in main channels show dominance of major tidal constituents (e.g., $M_2$, $S_2$, $N_2$, $K_1$ and $O_1$) contributing to the astronomical tide however, distinct increasing of shallow water (e.g., $M_4$) and long period (e.g., $MS_f$) components toward up-estuary. Using the characteristics of tidal form number to astronomical tide, overtides, and compound tides, the regional tidal regime could be assorted into three regions. Firstly, a dominance area of astronomical tide was presented from open sea to a front of Incheon Harbor (Yeomha channel) and to north entrance of Seokmo channel. The area between south and north entrance of Yeomha channel and Ganghaw north channel classified into zone of showing strong shallow water components. It could be separated into upper estuary, upstream the Singok underwater dam, showed dominance of shallow overtides (e.g., $M_4$ and $MS_4$) water and long-term compound tides (e.g., $MS_f$) larger magnitude than astronomical tide. The shallow water components was earlier generated in lower part (south entrance) of Yeomha channel have strong bottom by effect of shallower and narrower compared with Seokmo channel. Tidal asymmetries of upper estuary cause by a development of overtides and compound tides are mainly controlled by influence of man-made structure.
