The characteristics of the tool system give many effects into the costs and qualities for the finished components. Therefore, a tool life is one of the important issues on cold forging industry. However, since variables related with tool life are many complicated, the studies for solution should be investigated by the systematic research approach. In this study, heat-treatment of tool material is investigated to improve the tool life. Deep cryogenic treatment of tool steel is very efficient to improve the wear resistance due to the fine carbide. And, it is investigated that the shape and dimension of tool give effect into both tool life and quality of forged product.

This paper presents design methodology to determine the design parameters that affect the manufacture of aluminum forging piston using the FE simulation and the Taguchi method. Maximum forging load is used as the objective function, and preform, material temperature and draft angle are selected as the design parameters. Their combinations are implemented by orthogonal array, and forging load is evaluated through the simulation. From the analytic results of design parameters to minimize the load using signal to noise ratio, their optimal combinations are proposed. The proposed design methodology will be able to help in selecting proper preform among preforms and to be used in determining the optimal combination of the parameters in metal forming process.

The Hub is an auto mobile component used as aircon clutch. The important aspects in cold forging of the Hub with complex geometry are the design of an initial shape of the workpiece, the possibility of the forming by one-stage operation and the determination of number of performs, etc. Based on the systematic procedure of process sequence design, in this paper, the forming operation of cold forged part of the Hub is designed by the rigid-plastic finite element method. The two design criterion of geometrical filling without defect and an even distribution of effective strain in final product are investigated in controlling the initial shape of the workpiece and preform configuration. It is noted that one preforming operation is required in order to obtain final product of the Hub.
Microstructures and nonmetallic inclusions of five forged iron axes and one cast iron axe were analyzed. The axes were excavated from the Proto-Three Kingdom Period site located in Yangchon, Gimpo. The forging objects were made of almost pure iron and low carbon steel, and only one among five were quenched after its figuration. Malleable cast iron structures showing on the casting suggest that the decarbonized casting method were applied. According to the results of nonmetallic inclusion analysis, the axes were produced by hammering the iron bloom which was attained with low-temperature -solid-reduction-method. Showing higher Fe content over $SiO_2$, it is assumed that the re-collecting rate of Fe was low because of the insufficient forging temperature and the impurities were included during the smelting process. It is assumed that the lime was used as a preparation because of detecting high Ca contents.
In 1993, many bronze artifacts were excavated from the Sanoesa Temple(思惱寺), Chongju, Chungbuk. Twelve items were selected and chemically analyzed with AA Spectrometry and ICP-Atomic Emission Spectrometry. They were also observed under the optical microscopy and SEM. According to the results from chemical analysis, production method and use, these artifacts were classified into four groups: casting, wrought and welding products, and bells. Cast products, probably used for ritual, were alloy of 70% Cu, 10% Sn and 20% Pb. They showed ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase as a typical microstructure of casting. The ${\delta}$ phase was rarely observed due to the small amount of Sn. These artifacts included more lead than other alloys. They showed segregation like island-shape on the lead part. Wrought products used for daily too1s. were alloy of 80% Cu and 20% Sn. Since they were consist of ${\alpha}$ phase and martensite ${\beta}$ phase, it could be presumed that they were heat-treated. The production method could be identified from twinned grains in ${\alpha}$ phase. Lead was not included in because it had a bad effect to alloy. The bells were alloyed with 85% Cu, 10% Sn, 5% Pb or 90% Cu and 10% Sn. They show the dendrite structure because they were cast and alloyed with many tin. Weldinged were alloyed with 83% Cu, 12% Sn and 5% Pb. lt showed the fine dendrite structure because of fast cooling in air.

In this paper, the elastic deformation of cold forging die has been investigated to improve the accuracy of forged parts with FEM analysis and experiments using the strain gages. In the finite element analysis, two types of analysis are used to predict elastic deformation of die. The one is that dies are considered to be elastic body from initial stage to final one, and the other is that the dies are considered to be rigid body during forging simulation and then considered to be elastic body at elastic analysis. Considering the results of analysis and experiments, it is likely that the analytical results are in good agreement with experimental inspections. The method using the elastic assumption of die relatively takes a lot of time to simulate the forming operation. However, It is better that using an elastic die to predict not only the shape of product but also filling of die cavity.

This paper describes interactive computer procedures for design the forming sequences in cold forging. This system is implemented on the personal computer and its environment is a commercial AutoCAD system. The programming language. AutoLISP, was used for the configuration of the system. Since the process of metal forming can be considered as a transformation of geometry, treatment of the geometry of the part is a key in process planning. To recognize the part section geometry, the section entity representation, the section coordinate-redius representation and the section primitive geometru were adopted. This system includes six major modules such as input module, forging design module, forming sequence design module, die design module, FEM verification module and output module which are used independently or in all. The sequence drawing wigh all dimensions, which includes the dimensional tolerances and the proper sequence of operations, can generate under the environment of AutoCAD. The acceptable forming sequences can be verified further, using the FE simulation.

The semi-solid forging is a new forging technology in which the billet is heated to the semi-solid state coexisting liquid and solid phase for making globular microstructure and subsequently formed. As the semi-solid forging is compared with conventional casting such as die casting and squeeze casting for the characteristics of its process, the product without inner defects such as gas porosity and segregation can be obtained and its microstructure is globular grain. Simutaneously, its mechanical properties are improved by globular microstructure and the lower temperature of the slug causes the cycle time of manufacturing to be shortened and the die life to be lengthened. As it is compared with conventional cold and hot forging, it is possible to minimize the equipment of production owing to a lower forming load and reduce the number of process by a followed treatment for complex shaped product. Therefore it is needed to confirm the quality of a semi-solid forged product by defining its characteristics quantitatively under these advantages. This paper investigates the formability of a master cylinder by its forming variables. And the microstructural characteristics and mechanical property of it is also studied.

Alloy 718 nozzle component was manufactured by hot forging and electron beam welding process. In this process, 718 billets produced in domestic company were used and evaluated. Before performing industrial scale hot forging, small size hot compression tests were carried out under various process conditions and then microstructural evaluations were analyzed. Using the results, FEM simulations were performed in order to optimize the hot working process. After hot working, forged work-pieces were machined and welded by electron beam. Final nozzle components were heat treated and their microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated.
