Radiation safety management is being considered very important since radioactive isotopes such as Co-60 and Ir-192 are widely used in fields such as non-destructive test(NDT). In this study, the applicability of Mercury(II) Iodide($HgI_2$) source for tracing system was evaluated. To make sure the unit cell sensor's reliability, we evaluated the electrical properties of the sensor made with $HgI_2$, and then position dependence of the sensor was analyzed and compared with the dose distribution from the planning system. As a result of the evaluation, high reliability of the sensor was shown through the linearity of R-sq > 0.990 and reproducibility of CV < 0.015. In the position dependence evaluation, the maximum value was measured at the isocenter of the sensor and gradually decreased according to the distance. However, the dose distribution data from the planning system was turned out that has difference with that of the sensor up to 30%. This seems to come from the difference between single-point measuring based planning system and area measuring based sensor.
Purpose: This study was aimed to develop a new vaginal applicator(Shin's Applicator) for 2-channel high-dose rate vaginal brachytherapy to evaluate uniformity of surface dose, and to present 3-dimensional dose distribution of the applicator. Methods: Shin's Applicator was inexpensively constructed using human soft tissue equivalent acrylic bar. We evaluated dose uniformity along the applicator surface using film densitometer and performed vaginal intracavitary brachytherapy after insertion of the applicator using HDR brachytherapy planning software and brachytherapy unit(Ralstron-20B). Results: Shin's Applicator allows improved dose distribution than the existing 1-channel cylinder and achieves diminished urinary bladder and rectal dose by 20%. Conclusions: From the above results, it can be concluded that Shin's Applicator may be an improved form of a vaginal applicator. Furthermore, it can be suggested that this applicator has an advantage, for it prevents vaginal stenosis after radiation therapy and can be used as a disposable vaginal dilator. Further follow up examination with radiological study may be helpful to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of this applicator.
In this paper, the equivalent elastic properties of fiber reinforced plastic laminar are investigated using various homogenization schemes. Although there are several methods for predicting the equivalent elastic properties such as analytical formula or semi-empirical formula, most of them have some limitations or are not much accurate when handling new composite material consisting of various fiber, matrix and fiber-volume fraction ratio. To resolve the issues, computational homogenization scheme is adopted with a representative volume element (RVE) comprised of a set of finite elements. Finally, the equivalent elastic properties are obtained by applying periodic boundary conditions. The obtained results are compared with those by the existing methods and test results. Also its effect on structural analysis results of the composite satellite panel is investigated.
Radiation measuring system using wireless communication method with single channel has been diveloped and tested. In this system, radiation signals from GM tube are transformed into digital pulses in pulse processing circuit and modulated in FSK (frequency shift keying) circuit for digital communication and then wirelessly transmitted to a receiving unit. The digital pulses received are then demodulated in FSK circuit and converted into radiation dose/dose rate in the data acquisition unit to display on the screen of a personal computer. The performance of this system was evaluated by using both a pulse generator and a standard radiation source(Cs-137). In both cases, digital pulses with 5V were observed in pulse processing circuit without distortion of their shape through wireless communication system. The experimental results of radiation measurement by this system after several test-irradiation of GM detector to a standard radiation source(Cs-137), showed good agreement with irradiation dose rate within 10% difference, and proved that this system could be effectively utillized as radiation measuring instrument. It is expected that this wireless radiation measuring system developed for the first time in Korea, can be used as a radiation monitor as well as a personal dosimeter if we can further improve this system to adopt wireless multichannel communication system.

In this study, we studied the effect of $Co^{60}$ gamma-radiation on the FBGs written in photo-sensitive and commercial Ge-doped single-mode optical fibers. The FBGs were exposed to gamma-radiation up to a dose of 17.8 kGy at the dose rate of 300 Gy/min. According to the experimental data and analysis results, the lowest Bragg wavelength shift (18 pm) was obtained by a grating written in photosensitive fiber without $H_2$-loading. Also, we confirmed that the H2 loading process has considerably more influence on the Bragg wavelength shift change under gamma radiation than $GeO_2$ contents in the fiber core.
$^{131}I$ is a radiological isotope being used widely for treatment of cancer as emitting gamma-ray and it is also applied to estimate the function of thyroid for its accumulation in thyroid. However, $^{131}I$ is more difficult to quantitate comapred to $^{99m}Tc$, because $^{131}I$ has multiple energy gamma-ray emissions compared to $^{99m}Tc$ which is a mono energetic gamma-ray source. Especially, scattered ray and septal penetration resulted by high energy gamma ray have a bad influence upon nuclear medicine image. The purpose of this study was to estimate scatter components depending on the different source locations within a phantom using Monte Carlo simulation (GATE). The simulation results were validated by comparing with the results of real experiments. Dual-head gamma camera (ECAM, Chicago, Illinois Siemens) with high energy, general-purpose, and parallel hole collimators (hole radius: 0.17 cm, septal thickness: 0.2 cm, length: 5.08 cm) was used in this experiment. The NaI crystal is $44.5{\times}59.1\;cm$ in height and width and 0.95 cm in thickness. The diameter and height of PMMA phantom were 16 cm and 15 cm, respectively. The images were acquired at 5 different locations of $^{131}I$ point source within the phantom and the images of $^{99m}Tc$ were also acquired for comparison purpose with low energy source. The simulation results indicated that the scattering was influenced by the location of source within a phantom. The scattering effects showed the same tendency in both simulation and actual experiment, and the results showed that the simulation was very adequate for further studies. The results supported that the simulation techniques may be used to generalize the scattering effects as a function of a point source location within a phantom.
The applicability of photostimulated-luminescence (PSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) for the detection of 12 food materials (potato, onion, garlic, dried pumpkin, black mushroom, black soybean, Cheongkukjang powder, sea mustard, pepper powder, Ramyun soup, corn tea, and green tea powder) irradiated with an electron beam, gamma ray, and X ray at a range of 0.15 to 10 kGy was investigated. For PSL, negative results (less than 700 photon counts (PCs)) were observed from non-irradiated foods while the irradiated foods showed intermediate (879 to 2,414 PCs) and/or positive (19,951 to 65,919,035 PCs) values. In all irradiated samples, the maximum peak of the TL glow curve was observed between 150 and $250^{\circ}C$. Our findings demonstrate the successful application of PSL and TL to determine whether food items were irradiated or not. However, there were no significant differences among the radiation sources.

Purpose To assess the magnitude of differences between attenuation values of the true non-contrast image (TNC) and virtual non-contrast image (VNC) derived from twin-beam dual-energy CT (tbDECT) and dual-source DECT (dsDECT). Materials and Methods This retrospective study included 62 patients who underwent liver dynamic DECT with tbDECT (n = 32) or dsDECT (n = 30). Arterial VNC (AVNC), portal VNC (PVNC), and delayed VNC (DVNC) were reconstructed using multiphasic DECT. Attenuation values of multiple intra-abdominal organs (n = 11) on TNCs were subsequently compared to those on multiphasic VNCs. Further, we investigated the percentage of cases with an absolute difference between TNC and VNC of ≤ 10 Hounsfield units (HU). Results For the mean attenuation values of TNC and VNC, 33 items for each DECT were compared according to the multiphasic VNCs and organs. More than half of the comparison items for each DECT showed significant differences (tbDECT 17/33; dsDECT 19/33; Bonferroni correction p < 0.0167). The percentage of cases with an absolute difference ≤ 10 HU was 56.7%, 69.2%, and 78.6% in AVNC, PVNC, and DVNC in tbDECT, respectively, and 70.5%, 78%, and 78% in dsDECT, respectively. Conclusion VNCs derived from the two DECTs were insufficient to replace TNCs because of the considerable difference in attenuation values.
Average and effective energies for 239Pu-Be, 241Am-Li and 241Am-F neutron sources have been calculated from a number of published data for the neutron spectra and for the dose equivalent as a function of neutron energies by a numerical method. Also a calculation of the dose equivalent conversion factors, i. e., the first collision dose equivalent and the surface (or multicollision) dose equivalent that equals the product of surface-absorbed dose and a corresponding quality factor, per unit fluence of neutrons from these sources has been carried out in the same way as before. The results are as follows : 1. for average energies 4.07$\pm$0.33, 0.42 and 1.41 MeV; 2. for effective energies based on the concept of the first collision process in the human body 4.45$\pm$0.344, 0.51 and 1.47 MeV; 3. for effective energies based on the concept of the multi-collision process in the human body 4.50$\pm$0.36, 0.50 and 1.45 MeV; 4. for fluence-first collision dose equivalent conversion factors (2.74$\pm$0.07)10$^{-8}$ , 1.58$\times$ 10$^{-8}$ and 2.34$\times$10$^{-8}$ rems/(n/$\textrm{cm}^2$); and 5. for fluence-surface dose equivalent conversion factors (3.55$\pm$0.09)10$^{-8}$ , 2.19$\times$10$^{-8}$ and 2.82$\times$10$^{-8}$ rems/(n/$\textrm{cm}^2$) : respectively.
When continuous X-ray are used when acquiring and X-ray image, even the same material may not be accurately represented in the image according to the thickness due to various X-ray energies. To solve this problem, the X-ray energy spectrum was changed to improve the image quality. Using SPEKTR v3.0, an X-ray energy spectrum with an additional filter added and a general X-ray energy spectrum using only a unique filter were obtained. Simulation was performed using the obtained X-ray energy spectrum as a radiation source for Geant4 Application for Tomographic Emission (GATE). Using GATE data, an X-ray image with an additional filter and an image reconstructed from and X-ray image without an additional filter were compared and analyzed through a mono energy image of 74 keV. In the case of using the X-ray energy spectrum without using an additional filter, the amount of X-rays transmitted according to the thickness of the same material is different from the amount that decreases according to the thickness of the material. Similar results were obtained as the amount decreased with the material thickness. In other words, a similar result was obtained when the reduced dose was used with a mono energy. When an X-ray image is obtained by changing an X-ray energy spectrum using an additional filter, a more accurate result of transmission of X-rays may be obtained. In radiological examination, it was confirmed that the appropriate use of the additional filter has a great effect on improving the image quality.
