  • In this research, in order to study insulation effect of commercial XPS and recycled PE aggregates for prevention of frost heave in the roadbed of railroad track from the freezing temperature, model tests were carried out in the large freezing room. For this, thermal conductivities were measured for various dry densities, water contents, temperatures and mixing ratios of PE aggregates. From the tests, it can be seen that thermal conductivities of roadbed decrease with the increase of the ratio of mixed PE aggregates. However it was sensitive to the changes of temperature and water content due to the amount of water in the voids. From the model test of railroad track, it can be seen that the time to reach $0^{\circ}C$ was longer for XPS than that for the PE aggregates. Also the test shows best insulation effect can be achieved when XPS board was installed above the PE aggregate layer rather than the opposite order.

  • This study used TRIZ methodology to develop a new steel stud for load bearing or non-load bearing walls. Technical contradiction of high strength with high insulation performance can be solved by TRIZ. We suppose a new shape of high-strength insulated (HSI) Stud. This study showed TRIZ can be usefully applied to the development of new construction materials by solving technical contradictions. Insulation performance of HSI stud can be improved approximately 12% compared to the standard KS stud. Although up to 3.9% of the flexural strength degradation is expected, compressive strength of HSI studs are improved from 4.1% to 8%. In conclusion, improved thermal performance and higher strength can be expected for the HSI stud developed using TRIZ.

  • By strengthening the insulation performance of a building, a great deal of energy can be saved and a comfortable indoor environment can be offered to people. On the other hand, the climate, which has a great influence on the indoor environment, is changed by global warming. Therefore, in planning building envelope structure and design, climate change should be considered. In this paper, the optimal insulation thickness of exterior walls was calculated by an economic assessment method using heating degree-days. Additionally, how much influence climate change has on planning building insulation was investigated. The examination showed that heating degree-days have decreased by about 10% due to climate change in the past few decades. It was also shown that the optimal insulation thickness of exterior walls was thin, at about 6%, in three representative Korean cities (Seoul, Daejeon, Jeju).

  • In this study, a rational procedures for estimation of insulation thickness of a vertical wall for condensation control or personnel protection has been investigated. Design parameters are height of the wall, thermal conductivity, emissivity, and operating temperatures. The results indicated that the surface emissivity plays a very important role in the design of insulation for the purpose of surface temperature control, especially in natural convection situation. radiation heat transfer coefficients for some new insulation material surface, such as elastomers, estimated to be more than 90% of the total surface heat transfer coefficient.

  • In this study, we synthesized two different silica monoliths by using sol-gel, solvent exchange, surface modification, ambient pressure drying processes, and surfactant-based templating technique followed by calcination process. All of the prepared two silica monoliths showed crack-free appearance with fairly good transparency, and furthermore were confirmed to have extremely high porosity, specific surface area, and mean pore size below 30 nm. The silica aerogel sample exhibited finer and more homogeneous nano-sized pore structure due to spring back effect caused by surface modification, which resulted in better thermal insulation performance. Based on measured thermal conductivities and theoretical relationship, multi-layered glass window system in which silica monolith prepared in this study was inserted as a middle layer was revealed to have superior thermal insulation performance compared to conventional air-inserted glass window system.

  • Fluid flow through rock fractures has been quantified using equations such as Stokes equations, Reynolds equation (or local cubic law), cubic law, etc. derived from the Navier-Stokes equations under the assumption that linear flow prevails. Therefore, these simplified equations are limited to linear flow regime, and cause errors in nonlinear flow regime. In this study, causal mechanism of nonlinear flow and critical Reynolds number were presented by carrying out fluid flow modeling with both the Navier-Stokes equations and the Stokes equations for a three-dimensional rough-walled rock fracture. This study showed that flow regimes changed from linear to nonlinear at the Reynolds number greater than 10. This is because the inertial forces, proportional to the square of the fluid velocity, increased enough to overwhelm the viscous forces. This tendency was also shown for the unmated (slightly sheared) rock fracture. It was found that nonlinear flow was caused by the rapid increase in the inertial forces with increasing fluid velocity, not by the growing eddies that have been ascribed to nonlinear flow.

  • In case of tunnels in cold regions, a freeze of groundwater around tunnel may act as a barrier of tunnel drainage in winter, or may cause the inner extrusion of lining. In spite of that, a design of insulation for preventing the frost damage of tunnel lining has not been introduced in Korea, while foreign countries such as Norway and so on have a standard on insulation. In this study, a few freezing cases of road tunnels have been reviewed, and the results show that the freezing protection is necessary. In order to characterize the thermal distribution in the tunnel, following measurements have been performed at Hwa-ak tunnel; the temperature distribution by longitudinal lengths, the internal temperature of lining and the temperature distribution of the ground under pavement. From these measurements, the characteristics of the tunnel's internal temperature distribution due to temperature change in the air has been analyzed. Based on the measurement results on the temperature distribution at Hwa-ak tunnel, thermal flow tests on the rock specimen with and without insulation have been performed in the artificial climate chamber to investigate the performance of the insulation. Also, a number of 3D numerical analyses have been performed to propose appropriate insulation and insulation thicknesses for different conditions, which could prevent the frost damage of tunnel lining. As a result of the numerical analysis, air freezing index of 291$^{\circ}C{\cdot}$ Hr has been suggested as the threshold value for freezing criteria of groundwater behind the tunnel lining.
