  • The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of linearly elastic circular arches with rotationally flexible supports, including the effects of rotatory inertia, shear deformation and axial deformation, are solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. The lowest four natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes are obtained over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, and the rotational spring stiffness.

  • This paper describes an analytical study on the design approach of PC system with continuous connections at member ends. In multi-ribbed moment resisting slab (MRS) system, double tee members are connected continuously over inverted tee beams with the continuous reinforcements placed within topping concrete. Thus, negative moments are concentrated within the narrow connection area. In order to propose a design method, experimental results of the companion study were examined using detailed nonlinear analysis. Then nonlinear static analysis was used to evaluate the partial continuity effect and the moment redistribution mechanism. Material and cross sectional properties were obtained from experimental results of the companion study. Plastic hinge properties for nonlinear static analysis were modeled with cracking moment, nominal moment, corresponding member deformations, etc. The analysis results showed that a large amount of negative moment of MRS slab can be reduced by applying partial continuity and moment redistribution in MRS joint.

  • Numerical methods for calculating both the natural frequencies and buckling loads of columns with the multiple elastic springs are developed. In order to derive the governing equations of such columns, each elastic spring is modeled as a discrete elastic foundation with the finite longitudinal length. By using this model, the differential equations governing both the free vibrations and buckled shapes, respectively, of such columns are derided. These differential equations are solved numerically. The Runge- Kutta method is used to integrate the differential equations, and the determinant search method combined with Regula-Falsi method is used to determine the eingenvalues. namely natural frequencies and buckling loads. In the numerical examples, the clamped-clamped. clamped-hinged, hinged-clamped and hinged-hinged end constraints are considered. Extensive numerical results including the frequency parameters, mode shapes of free vibrations and buckling load parameters are presented in the non-dimensional forms.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the free vibration characteristics of tapered beams with translational and rotational springs and tip masses at the ends. The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory. The governing differential equation for the free vibrations of linearly tapered beams is solved numerically using the corresponding boundary conditions. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods for cases in which they are available. The lowest three natural frequencies are calculated over a wide range of non-dimensional system parameters: the translational spring parameter, the rotational spring parameter, the mass ratio and the dimensionless mass moment of inertia.

The beam model is based on the classical Bernoulli-Euler beam theory which neglects the effects of rotatory inertia and shear deformation. • In the case of the railway bridges, uplift forces were occurred at the edge of the segments when vehicular loads were applied. These forces caused the compressive and tensile forces in the fastening system. In the past, a structural analysis has been performed to investigate the safety of fastening system which was modeled with one directional spring elements based on the compressive test of fastening system. In this case, the stiffness of the spring element was obtained from experimental study which was conducted by compressive load. Therefore, to perform rational and exact structural analysis, the translational stiffness of the fastening system obtained from the experimental study applied the tensile load and the rotational stiffness should be considered because it was occurred the tensile force as well as the compressive force in fastening system. In this study, an elastic and inelastic experimental study was performed for six specimens. The translational stiffness along the vertical axis of rail and the rotational stiffness along the strong axis of rail were investigated, also structural behavior of the fastening system was analyzed.

  • This paper deals with the buckling loads of column with rotation end restricted by rotational spring. The ordinary differential equations governing the buckling loads of such column is derived as nondimensional forms, and also its boundary conditions are derived. The buckled column model is based on the classical Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. The Runge-Kutta method and Regula-Falsi method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalue. The numerical methods developed herein for the buckling loads of the such column are found to be efficient and reliable. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the structural engineering field.

  • This study explores the free vibrations of tapered column with hinged end restricted by rotational spring. The ordinary differential equation governing the free vibration of such column is derived as nondimensional form in which three kinds of cross-sectional shape are considered. In order to obtain the natural frequencies of column, the governing differential equation is solved by numerical procedures. Numerical results are compared with existing solutions by other methods. It is expected that the results obtained herein can be practically utilized in the structural and the vibration control fields.

  • In this paper the fuzzy extension for the classical engineering mechanics problems is studied. The governing differential equation is derived for the buckling loads of the columns with uncertain mediums: the their own weight and the flexural rigidity. The columns with one typical end constraint(hinged1 clarnped/free) and the other finite rotational spring with fuzzy constant are considered in numerical examples. The vertex method is used to evaluate the fuzzy functions. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to solve the differential equation and determine the buckling loads, respectively. The membership functions of the buckling load are calculated. The index of fuzziness to quantitatively describe the propagation of fuzziness is defined. According to the fuzziness of governing factors, the varlation of index of fuzziness for buckling load is investigated, and the sensitivity for the end constraints is analyzed.

  • In this study, the method to predict the lateral response by using strain data is presented on the steel moment frame. For this, the reliability of the proposed method by applying the example of five-story frame structure were verified. Using the strain value of columns, it predicted the lateral response of structure. It is assumed that all of four strain sensors for one column set up and the strain responses of both end of the column are utilized. The lateral response of member is calculated by using the slope deflection method. Also, using the acceleration response of the one layer, the stiffness of the rotation spring located in the supporting point is predicted. As a result, it was effective to understand the lateral displacement and acceleration responses and to predict local damage and location.
