  • Cerium (IV) ion-initiated graft copolymerizations of acrylonitrile to raw silk were investigated in an effort to carry out sericine-fixation. The change in ceric ammonium nitrate concentration exhibited a maximum in percentage of grafting at 0.003M. Also observed was that the change in nitric acid content in reaction media gave a maximum in percentage of grafting at 0.1M. Percentage of grafting was increased generally with increase in acrylonitrile concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature. Raw silk sericin grafted with acrylonitrile was not de gummed by boiling off test and optimum graft percentage was considered at 20%.

  • In order to improve the properties of the copolymer and the terpolymer that was used as removal-type pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA), we synthesized quaterpolymer with the variation of the types of monomer, initiator, and solvent, and concentration, the monomer/solvent ratio, reaction temperature and time. and determined the properties of this adhesive: the viscosity, molecular weight, conversion, solid content and structure of polymer. The prepared polymer was crosslinked by changing the type of crosslinking agent and concentration, and then we investigated the characteristics or adhesive such as peel adhesion, shear adhesion, heat resistance, weathering resistance and peel adhesion to aging. The optimum performance of RA/2- EHA/MMA/2-HEMA as a PSA were obtained when benzoyl peroxide was used as an initiator with the reactant mixture consisted of 80% BA and 2-EHA, 15%, MMA, and 5% 2-HFMA. The optimum reaction temperature and time were $80^{\circ}C$ and 8 hours, respectively. For BA/2-EHA/MMA/AA, the optimum performance was obtained when the polymerization was performed at the monomer composition of 80% BA/2-EHA, 15% MMA, and 5% AA. BPO was used as initiator and the optimum reaction temperature and time were identical to those of BA/2-EHA/MMA/ 2-HEMA. Isocyanate and melamine were used to crosslink BA/2-EHA/MMA/2-HEMA and BA/2-EHA/MMA/AA, respectively. No effect on the type of cross-linking agent on the peel adhesion was observed with aging. The quarterpolymers crosslinked with melamine left residues on the counter surface after weathering resistance test, while the polymers crosslinked with isocyanate did not.

  • Ultra violet (UV) curable pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA) were prepared by controlling both the structure of acryl copolymer and the functionality and content of multi-functional monomers. Acryl copolymer worked as the base polymer for giving the tackiness. Multi-functional monomers were used to vary the crosslinked structure and the degree of crosslink. Acryl copolymer showed the reduced peel strength after UV curing by decreasing the content of 2-ethylhexyl acrylate in the monomer composition. Both the peel strength of PSA and the content of residue found on silicon wafer decreased after UV curing by increasing the functionality of multi-functional monomers. UV curable PSA containing 20 phr six-functional monomer showed the higher peel strength before UV curing and the lower peel strength and the least residue on silicon wafer after UV curing.

  • Partially sulfonated poly(aryl ether sulfone) membranes were prepared from the sulfonated sulfone monomer, which was synthesized by a nucleophilic substitution, non-sulfonated monomers and potassium carbonate by a direct polymerization method and a subsequent solution casting technique with mixed solvents of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylacetamide (DMAc). To investigate the effect of mixed solvent, the volume ratios of NMP and DMAc were varied in the range of $0{\sim}100%$ and the degrees of sulfonation of the copolymers were fixed as 50%. The surface properties of the resulting membranes were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM), and a comparative study of the morphology changes and the physicochemical properties such as proton conductivity and methanol permeability was achieved. It was found that proton conductivities depend on the volume ratio of NMP-DMAc mixed solvents, and the proton conductivity determined at the condition of $25^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity was $1.38{\times}10^{-1}\;S/cm$ for the membrane prepared in the 50:50 v/v-% of NMP : DMAc mixed solvent.

  • The various functional groups, such as hydroxyl(-OH), carboxyl(-COOH) and quinonic oxygen(OC<) on the carbon black(abbreviated to CB) surface were activated with n-butyl lithium solution in n-hexane and then acrylate and methacrylate monomers were graft polymerized onto these activated anionic sites and CB-grafted polymers were obtained. To separate homopolymers from reaction mixture, non-solvent precipitation method or centrifugal separating method were applied. Subsequently, conversion, grafting ratio and efficiency were determined at various reaction temperatures and times. In case of acrylates, the grafting ratio showed 20~30% but methacrylates showed 150~200%. Also the anion polymerizations between CB and monomers were nearly reached to equilibrium state within one or two hours under each reaction temperatures but conversion and grafting ratio were increased a little with reaction temperature increase. In colloidal dispersion stability test, before heat-drying, the all CB-grafted polymers showed good dispersed stability in good solvents for acrylic and methacrylic homopolymers. Futhermore, CB-polymethacrylates were found to show excellent collidal properties for good solvents of methacrylic homopolymer even after heat-drying. Identification of the grafted polyacrylates and polymethacrylates onto the CB surface was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy. In addition, electric resistance values of CB-grafted polymers were measured by Four-probe method, and the increase of the grafting ratio showed the increase of the surface resistance.

  • After pressurized impregnation treatment, which has been proposed as an effective conservation method for stone cultural property, was executed with methyl metacrylate (MMA), MMA-butyl acrylate (PMB73) mixture and MMA-vinyl trimethoxy silane (PMV5) co-monomer mixture, the physical-chemical properties on the sand stone and the granite impregnated were evaluated. Compared to the case of granite, the impregnation ratios of sand stone showed larger values in the range of 3.2 to 3.7 wt% and these were increased up to 32% when the decompression process was applied to autoclave. The physical properties of sand stone such as anti-moisture property, flexural strength, impact property and ultrasonic velocity were also higher values than those of granite, which can be interpreted by high impregnation ratio resulted in many void within sand stone. The impact failure energy was 1.22 J for PMMA, 1.84 J for PMB73, and 2.8 J for PMV5, respectively. Since the inorganic affinity of treatment agent is more effective than the molecular structure of acrylic agent, PMV5 improved inorganic property indicates the optimum impact property.

  • With the synthesis of hyper crosslinked polymer particle (HCPP), having microporous structure with hydroxyl functional group, synthesized via polymerization reaction consists of three stepssuspension polymerization, hyper crosslinking by Friedel-Craft catalysis and hydrolysis reaction, the effects of the ratio of each monomer, hyper crosslinking conditions and $CO_2$ supercritical drying on the variations of surface morphology, pore size & distribution and BET surface area of HCPP have been investigated. It was observed that the formation of surface crack or fracture of HCPP was intimately related with the degree of hyper crosslinking reaction between microphase separated domains. And the value of BET surface area of HCPP increased with the increase of reaction temperature, time and the amounts of solvent used in hyper crosslinking step. Moreover, $CO_2$ supercritical drying was proven to be a very effective method for removing stabilizer, unreacted monomers and oligomers from HCPP but needed to add methanol as a co-solvent for efficient removing of residual catalyst.

  • Melt grafting of itaconic acid (IA) onto an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) with various organic peroxide initiators was performed. Finding the optimum mixing conditions and concentration of ingredients is critical for effective grafting and optimum properties of grafted materials. This study focused on the effects of mixing conditions (temperature and time), initiator type/concentration and monomer concentration on the grafting degree and efficiency, melt flow index, and gel content of EPDM-g-IA. The initiator, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)-hexane (T-101), appeared to meet for the best grafting degree (1.91%). The grafting degree increased markedly by increasing the amounts of monomer IA and initiator T-101. The grafting degree also increased by increasing mixing temperature and time. The optimum monomer and initiator concentrations and reaction temperature and time were found to be about 5wt%/0.05wt% and $160^{\circ}C$/15min, respectively. It was found that the physical properties of EPDM-g-IA were higher than those of the pristine EPDM.

  • The theoretical calculations for $S_nO_n,\;S_nO_{2n},\;S_nO_{3n}\;(n\;=\;1{\sim}4)$ have been considered at the B3LYP level of theory with various basis sets. The optimized geometries, harmonic vibrational frequencies, and binding energies are evaluated to elucidate the thermodynamic stability and spectroscopic properties. The harmonic vibrational frequencies for the molecules considered in this study show all real numbers implying true minima. The binding energies due to increasing of $S_nO_n,\;S_nO_{2n},\;S_nO_{3n}$ monomers are calculated at the MP2/6-311G** level of theory. For $S_nO_n\;(n\;=\;1{\sim}4)$, the binding energy difference is about 20∼25 kcal/mol by adding SO monomer. For $SO_2\;and\;SO_3\;(n\;=\;1{\sim}4)$, the binding energy differences are relatively small by comparing to $S_nO_n$.

  • Furan-containing epoxide monomers (8, 9) were designed and synthesized as carbon-neutral, environment-friendly adhesion material. Bicyclic skeleton were constructed using the Diels-Alder reaction of furan and methyl acrylate, both readily accessible starting material from a biomass via bio-refinery process. After reduction of ester functionality, resulting hydroxyl moieties were coupled to epichlorohydrin to provide the epoxy-functionalized furanic monomers (8, 9). The structure of new furanic monomers was confirmed by $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. As UV-curable monomers, basic properties such as UV curing time and the extent of UV curing were evaluated by photo DSC. Photo-curing shrinkages were measured by linear variable differential transformer transducer (LVDT) and the effect of molecular structure on shrinkage was considered. In addition, new synthetic compounds showed the shear strength over 3 MPa when they were photo-cured between polycarbonate plates, which indicates these compounds are feasible to use as photo-curable adhesive materials.
