  • In this study, experimental analysis was performed about lateral load capacity and behavior of laterally loaded-bored rigid piles in muti-layered soil conditions. Lateral pile load tests were performed for muti-layerd soils consisting of different relative density. Ultimated lateral load capacities were measured from lateral load-displacement curves and compared with estimated values using theoretical methods. Bending moments and unit lateral capacity distribution of surrounding piles were measured from attached strain gauges and earth pressure sensors on the pile. It was found that ultimated lateral load capacities were different from the muti-layered soil conditions, and measured values were lower than estimated values. The bending moment distributions of the pile were similar all the time. Unit lateral capacity distributions were a little different from muti-layered soil conditions, but basically similar to the distribution proposed by Prasad and Chari (1999).

  • In this study, to solve a problem that cannot consider the contribution effect of each layers when the apparent earth pressure in homogeneous ground is applied to multi-layered ground, the measured earth pressures at World were investigated and analyzed. It has been confirmed that the apparent earth pressure in mulit-layered ground is different from single ground and that the extra layer's contribution to the earth pressure cannot be considered. The conventional method of calculating the apparent earth pressure for single ground was extended to mulit-layered ground, and proposed and verified the applicable method for both single and mulit-layered ground. The proposed methods predicted the earth pressure closer to the measurements at the excavation depth of 0.1Z/H or below, and the prediction reliability was evaluated to be better than the conventional method. Among the proposed methods, the method of considering the area ratio of the active failure has a geotechnical validity and predicts the most similar results to the actual earth pressure. To confirm the applicability of the proposed methods, it was presented by comparing and analyzing the results of the proposed methods with the conventional method for the actual case.

  • The Strain Wedge Model is useful method for horizontal bearing capacity calculation considering interaction of pile and ground deformation. However, application case of the Strain Wedge Model is rare and the strain wedge model of plenty of verification is needed on multi layered ground in Korea. In this present study, to conduct laboratory model test and numerical analysis for verification of Strain Wedge Model, adapt model that could describe the interaction of pile and ground deformation on multi layered ground. In model test, it was performed to estimate the behavior characteristics on pile under lateral load and to analyze the relationship between load and deformation. In addition, it was fulfilled to measure the skin friction on pile using strain gauge and to decide the ground passive resistance wedge using skin friction. Numerical analysis was performed to verify laboratory model test results.

  • In this study, the ultimate lateral load capacity of pile driven into multi-layered soil was estimated using cone penetration test results and a method was proposed to reflect multi-layered soil conditions. For multi-layered specimens prepared with different relative density at different layers, the cone penetration tests and lateral pile load tests were conducted. Based on the test results, measured and estimated values of the ultimate lateral load were compared and analyzed. The estimated results were obtained from the methods proposed by Broms (1964), Petrasovits & Award (1972) and Prasad & Chari (1999). The method was proposed for modifying the earth pressure distribution of Prasad & Chari (1999) to consider multi-layered soil conditions. From the analysis, it was seen that results obtained from the proposed method showed improvement with less data scatter similarly to those obtained from Broms (1964) and Petrasovits & Award (1972)'s methods.

  • Generally foundation is composed of complicated multi - layers. Primary objective of this study is to perform numerical analysis on the distribution of stresses on the subgrade with the variation of constitutive equations, the structures and the depth of layer, rigidity, loading condition, etc. Multi - layered soils has been treated as Burmister's elastic model. However, in this research it was intended to analyzed the distribution of stresses on the subgrade with all of the multi - layered soils by using the EVP(elasto - viscoplastic) model, one of the numerical program based on the Biot's equation as governing equation. The numerical results are compared with those by the Burmister's and the Fox'method, which in turn proves to be satisfactory. This research is aiming at investigating the mechanism of stress transfer within a foundation by using computer program for multilayers foundation.

  • Three ground models are analyzed using a 1g shaking table and laminar shear box (LSB) to investigate the impact of the ground structure on seismic wave amplification during earthquakes. Multi-layer horizontal, embankment, and basin ground models are selected for this investigation, with each model being divided into dense and loose ground layers, Accelerometers are installed during the construction of each ground model to capture any seismic wave amplification owing th the propagation of an artificial seismic wave, sine wave sweep, and 10-Hz sine wave through a given ground model. The amplification of the tested seismic waves is analyzed using the observed peak ground acceleration and spectrum acceleration. The observed acceleration amplification in the multi-layer horizontal ground model is significantly higher the seismic waves that propagated across the dense ground-loose ground boundary compared with those that only propagated through the dense ground. Furthermore, the observed acceleration amplification gradually increases in the central part of the multi-layer embankment and basin models for the seismic waves that propagated across the dense ground-loose ground boundary.

  • In this research, finite difference (FD) scheme for the interface of the layer between different soil characteristics was suggested. Based on the suggested scheme, FD analysis program for the consolidation analysis of the multi-layered and smeared soil was developed. And the applicability of the program was investigated by the FD analysis conducted for the various soil conditions. Analysis results showed that the permeability near the drainage boundary had a dominant effect on the consolidation rate. And the consolidation rate of the soil with the constant permeability in smeared area was retarded more than the soil with the linear variation of permeability in smeared area. Simple assumption of the constant variation of permeability in smeared area could be used when the decreasing rate of permeability in smeared area was relatively low. But exact assumption of the permeability variation in smeared area should be considered when the decreasing rate of permeability in smeared area was relatively high. Finally, based on the analysis result on Busan area, the analysis considering multi-layered soil should be needed to exactly evaluate time for the completion of consolidation.

  • In this study, dynamic response of a vertical shaft subjected to seismic loads was evaluated by three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) approach. The emphasis was on quantifying the ground conditions, input motions and direction of motions. A series of parametric analyses were carried out. From the results of FE analysis, more than 1.7 times increase in shear force and bending moment is obtained when the stiff layer was thinker than the soft layer. And all of the maximum values were occurred near the interface between the soil layers. The dynamic behavior of vertical shaft was significantly influenced by the different frequencies of the input motion, and normalized acceleration of surrounding soil was 3 times larger than vertical shaft.
