  • We improve the performance of cardiac disorder classification by adding new temporal features extracted from continuous heart sound signals. We add three kinds of novel temporal features to a conventional feature based on mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC): Heart sound envelope, murmur probabilities, and murmur amplitude variation. In cardiac disorder classification and detection experiments, we evaluate the contribution of the proposed features to classification accuracy and select proper temporal features using the sequential feature selection method. The selected features are shown to improve classification accuracy significantly and consistently for neural network-based pattern classifiers such as multi-layer perceptron (MLP), support vector machine (SVM), and extreme learning machine (ELM).

  • There is several ways of recycling methods for waste FRP boats. The main one is mechanical recycling that is one of the simple and technically proven methods. It recently has been reported that FRP can be recycled by separating into laminated glass fiber layers instead of crushing into powder. Even though the mechanical recycling is a good way for the eligibility of laminated glass fiber reinforced material, the system should have another option which can collect resin of FRP. Because the resin is still very useful renewable energy source, that cannot be discarded, But FRP is made up of laminated glass fiber(roving cloth layer) which is fire retardant substances and very hard to break into each layer. Due to the high cost of fossil energy the waste plastics should be regenerated to the source of renewable energy. Laminated glass fiber which is recyclable in a very limited way, is currently a serious barrier to waste FRP boat regenerating. This study is to propose a new extracting method which is efficient and environment friendly FRP waste regenerating system. The recycled glass fiber which is obtained by the separation of the roving layer from FRP waste has been found to be useful for concrete(FRC) products or concrete(FRC) structures as fiber reinforced material. And it can be successively applied to renewable energy applications using the waste resins of FRP residue without laminated glass fiber.

  • In this paper, a new virtual-straight line parameter determination methodology and fast time domain simulation technique for non-uniform interconnects are presented and verified. Time domain signal response of interconnects circuit considering the characteristic of non-linear transistor is performed by using model order reduction method. Since model order reduction method is peformed by using per unit length parameters, virtual- straight line parameters for non-uniform interconnects are determined. Its method is integrated into Berkeley SPICE and shown that time domain signal responses using proposed method have a good agreement with the results of conventional circuit simulator HSPICE. The proposed method can be efficiently employed in the high-performance VLSI circuit design since it can provide a fast and accurate time domain signal response of complicated multi - layer interconnects.

  • It was revaluated about taxonomical position of the Tilingia tsusimensis (Yabe) Kitagawa (Apiaceae) collected from Mt. Gaya, Mt. Geumo, and Mt. Songni in Korea. Its diagnostic features include slightly dorsally compressed mericarps, acute-prominent ribs, ternate leaves, and dimorphic white petals. It is morphologically similar to Cymopterus and Pimpinella in having ternate leaves. It is distinguished from Cymopterus having asymmerty mericarps, 3-4 mericarp ribs, and winged dorsal ribs. Pimpinella differs in having slightly laterally compressed mericarps without ribs and conspicuous calyx teeth. Also, it looks like Angelica with obsolete calyx teeth and multilayer pericarps, but is distinguished by having its broadly winged lateral ribs and strongly dorsally compressed mericarps. Tilingia tsusimensis formed a monophyletic clade or sister group relationship with a genus Angelica based on ITS sequences. Based on the above observations, we conclude that this plant is here referred to T. tsusimensis (Yabe) Kitagawa.

  • The objective of this study is to forecast the operational continuous ability using Artificial Neural Networks in battalion defensive operation for the commander decision making support. The forecasting of the combat result is one of the most complex issue in military science. However, it is difficult to formulate a mathematical model to evaluate the combat power of a battalion in defensive operation since there are so many parameters and high temporal and spatial variability among variables. So in this study, we used company combat power level data in Battalion Command in Battle Training as input data and used Feed-Forward Multilayer Perceptrons(MLP) and General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) to evaluate operational continuous ability. The results show 82.62%, 85.48% of forecasting ability in spite of non-linear interactions among variables. We think that GRNN is a suitable technique for real-time commander's decision making and evaluation of the commitment priority of troops in reserve.

  • This paper estimates the long-term settlement of Kimpo metropolitan landfill based on measured settlement data from 180 landfill monitors accumulated over a period of 12 years. Comparison of domestic and international settlement records indicate that the domestic compression rate is slightly lower due to greater portion of organic component. Several existing settlement models are used to compare with the observed behavior and also to estimate long-term settlement. The hyperbolic, Gibson & Lo, Bjarngard & Edgers and Power Creep Law models compare well with the measured settlement of the Kimpo metropolitan landfill. The settlement models are further used to estimate long-term settlement. Bjarngard & Edgers and Power Creep Law models result in higher estimates of the long-term settlement compared to the hyperbolic and Gibson & Lo models. Further comparisons indicate that other models, including Sowers and log models, are inapproriate for predicting the long-term settlement of the Kimpo metropolitan landfill.

  • A stochastic method using continuous time Markov process is presented to model the one-dimensional convective nuclide transport in geologic media, which have usually heterogeneous feature in physical/geochemical parameters such as velocity, dispersion coefficient, and retardation factor resulting poor description by conventional deterministic advection-dispersion model. The primary desired quantities from a stochastic model are the mean values and variance of the state variables as a function of time. The time-dependent probability distributions of nuclides are presented for each discretized compartment given the volumetric groundwater flux and the intensity of transition. Since this model is discrete in medium space, physical/geochemical parameters which affect nuclide transport can be easily incorporated for the heterogeneous media as well as remarkably layered media having spatially varied parameters. Even though the Markov process model developed in this study was shown to be sensitive to the number of discretized compartments showing numerical dispersion as the number of compartments are increased, this could be easily calibrated by comparing with the analytical deterministic model.

  • In this paper, we propose a Linear Prediction (LP) analysis-based feature for detecting Snapping Shrimp (SS) Noise (SSN) in underwater acoustic data. SS is a species that creates high amplitude signals in shallow, warm waters, and its frequent and loud sound is a major source of noise. The proposed feature takes advantage of the characteristic of SSN, which is sudden and rapidly disappearing, by using LP analysis to detect the exact noise interval and reduce the effects of SSN. The error between the predicted and measured value is large and results in effective SSN detection. To further improve performance, a constant false alarm rate detector is incorporated into the proposed feature. Our evaluation shows that the proposed methods outperform the state-of-the-art MultiLayer-Wavelet Packet Decomposition (ML-WPD) in terms of receiver operating characteristic curve and Area Under the Curve (AUC), with the LP analysis-based feature achieving a higher AUC by 0.12 on average and lower computational complexity.

  • Seismic refracrion and reflection surveys were conducted along an E-W trending track of 482 m long in Ilwall-dong, Pohang. End-on spread was employed as source-receiver configuration with 2 m for both geophone interval and offset. Seismic data were acquired using 24 channels at every shot fired every 2 m along the track. Refraction data were interpreted using equations for multi-horizontal layers. Reflection data were processed in the sequence of trace edit, gain control, CMP sorting, NMO correction, mute, common offset gathering, and filtering to produce a single fold seismic section. There are two layers in shallow subsurface of the study area. Upper layer has the P-wave velocities ranging from 267 to 566 m/s and is interpreted as a layer of unconsolidated sediments. Lower layer has P-wave velocities of 1096-3108 m/s and is interpreted as weathered rock to hard rock. Most of the lower layer classified as soft rock. Upper layer has lateral variations in both P-wave velocity and thickness. The upper layer in the eastern part of the seismic line is 3-5 m thick and has P-wave velocity of 400 m/s in average. The upper layer in the western part is 8-10 m thick and has P-wave velocity of 340 m/s in average. The eastern part is interpreted as unconsolidated beach sand, while the western part is interpreted as infilled soil to develop a construction site. Three fault systems of high angle are imaged in seismic reflection section. It is interpreted that the area between these fault systems are relatively safe. Large buildings should be located in the safe ground condition of no fault and footings should be designed to be in the basement rock of 3-10 m deep below the surface.
