  • Aging aircraft accumulates widespread fatigue damage commonly referred to as multiple site damage(MSO). For ductile material such as 2024-T3 aluminum, MSO may lower the service life below that which is predicted by conventional fracture mechanics. The present paper is concerned with the fatigue life extension by pre-indentation technique for thin 2024-T3 aluminum plate to decelerate the crack propagation rate in the panels with MSO. The panel with fastener holes can be simply modelled by Hole/Slot type Middle-Tension specimen. Results of fatigue testing show significantly improving failure cycles from 10 to 40 times. This retardation effect is decreased by increasing the loading level in the constant amplitude loading. In the sense of retardation mechanism, the crack propagation rate is gradually attenuated by entering the indentation mark and maintains at the lowest value for a long period after the edge of crack passes the center of indentation area.

  • A constitutive model unifying plasticity and crack damage mode)s was developed to address the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete planar members. The stress of concrete in tension-compression was conceptually defined by the sum of the compressive stress developed by the strut-action of concrete and the tensile stresses developed by tensile cracking. The plasticity model with multiple failure criteria was used to describe the isotropic damage of compressive crushing affected by the anisotropic damage of tensile cracking. The concepts of the multiple fixed crack damage model and the plastic flow model of tensile cracking were used to describe the tensile stress-strain relationship of multi-directional cracks. This unified model can describe the behavioral characteristics of reinforced concrete in cyclic tension-compression conditions, i.e. multiple tensile crack orientations, progressively rotating crack damage, and compressive crushing of concrete. The proposed constitutive model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparison with existing experimental results from reinforced concrete shear panels and walls under cyclic load conditions.

  • The inherent characteristic of concrete tensile cracks, directional nonlocal crack damage, causes so-called rotating tensile crack damage and softening of compressive strength. In the present study, a plasticity model was developed to describe the behavior of reinforced concrete planar members In tension-compression. To describe the effect of directional nonlocal crack damage, the concept of microplane model was combined with the plasticity model. Unlike existing models, in the proposed model, softening of compressive strength as well as the tensile crack damage were defined by the directional nonlocal crack damage. Once a tensile cracking occurs, the microplanes of concrete are affected by the nonlocal crack damage. In the microplanes, microscopic tension and compression failure surfaces are calculated. By integrating the microscopic failure surfaces, the macroscopic failure surface is calculated. The proposed model was implemented to finite element analysis, and it was verified by comparisons with the results of existing shear panel tests.

  • This paper proposes a simple numerical method, based on the stress-modified fracture strain-damage model with the stress-reduction technique, for predicting the failure behaviors of ductile plates with multiple through-wall cracks. This technique is implemented using the user-defined subroutines provided in ABAQUS. For validation, the results simulated using the proposed method are compared with published experimental data of Japanese researchers.

  • The eddy current testing performance directly affects the results of a steam generator tube integrity assessment because the integrity assessment of defected tubes is conducted based on eddy current testing results. This means that it may not be possible to accurately discriminate between adjacent flaws. This paper presents an investigation on the resolution of rotating pancake coils with multiple cracks and the effects on the structural integrity assessment of steam generator tubes.

  • In this paper, nonlinear parallel structural analyses are introduced by using the parallel multifrontal solver and damage localization for 2D and 3D crack models is presented as the application of nonlinear parallel computation. The parallel algorithms related with nonliear reduce the amount of memory used is carried out because many variables should be utilized for this highly nonlinear damage analysis. Also, Riks' continuation method is parallelized to search the solution when strain softening occurs due to damage evolution. For damage localization problem, several computational models having up to around 1-million degree of freedoms are used. The parallel performance in this nonlinear parallel algorithm is shown through these examples and the local variation of damage at crack tip is compared among the models with different degree of freedoms.

  • In a structure, damage can occur at several scales from micro-cracking to corrosion or loose bolts. This makes the identification of damage difficult with one mode of sensing. Hence, a multi-mode actuated sensing system is proposed based on a self-sensing circuit using a piezoelectric sensor. In the self sensing-based multi-mode actuated sensing, one mode provides a wide frequency-band structural response from the self-sensed impedance measurement and the other mode provides a specific frequency-induced structural wavelet response from the self-sensed guided wave measurement. In this study, an experimental study on the pipeline system is carried out to verify the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed structural health monitoring approach. Different types of structural damage are artificially inflicted on the pipeline system. To classify the multiple types of structural damage, a supervised learning-based statistical pattern recognition is implemented by composing a two-dimensional space using the damage indices extracted from the impedance and guided wave features. For more systematic damage classification, several control parameters to determine an optimal decision boundary for the supervised learning-based pattern recognition are optimized. Finally, further research issues will be discussed for real-world implementation of the proposed approach.

  • This paper describes multi-scale based ductile fracture simulation using finite element (FE) damage analysis. The maximum and crack initiation loads of cracked components were predicted using proposed virtual testing method. To apply the local approach criteria for ductile fracture, stress-modified fracture strain model was adopted as the damage criteria with modified calibration technique that only requires tensile and fracture toughness test data. Element-size-dependent critical damage model is also introduced to apply the proposed ductile fracture simulation to large-scale components. The results of the simulation were compared with those of the tests on SA333 Gr. 6 full-scale pipes at $288^{\circ}C$, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute.

  • Currently, the number of bridge structures in Korea is continuously increasing and enlarged, and the number of old bridges that have been in service for more than 30 years is also steadily increasing. Bridge aging is being treated as a serious social problem not only in Korea but also around the world, and the existing manpower-centered inspection method is revealing its limitations. Recently, various bridge damage detection studies using deep learning-based image processing algorithms have been conducted, but due to the limitations of the bridge damage data set, most of the bridge damage detection studies are mainly limited to one type of crack, which is also based on a close set classification model. As a detection method, when applied to an actual bridge image, a serious misrecognition problem may occur due to input images of an unknown class such as a background or other objects. In this study, five types of bridge damage including crack were defined and a data set was built, trained as a deep learning model, and an open set recognition-based bridge multiple damage recognition model applied with OpenMax algorithm was constructed. And after performing classification and recognition performance evaluation on the open set including untrained images, the results were analyzed.
