  • In this paper, we propose the result of PSSK(Phase Silence Shift Keying) modulation scheme that is mixed PSK(Phase Shift Keying) modulation and PPM(Pulse Position Modulation) method. The performance of underwater communication systems are influenced underwater channel characteristics. In particular, delay spread can make ISI(Inter Symbol Interference) because of reverberation and multi path. It degrade the performance of the communication system. Also underwater sensor networks consider about power efficient due to the particularities of their operating environment. PSSK modulation method transmit two orthogonal symbol and using silence period in a period so it can reduce the power. Increasing the distance of between modulation symbols, to enhance the performance of BER(Bit Error Rate) as well as to improve power efficient. The result of sea trial, QPSK modulation BER is $3.19{\times}10^{-1}$ and PSSK modulation BER is $2.89{\times}10^{-1}$.

  • Underwater acoustic wave in shallow water is propagated through multipath that has a large delay spread causing Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) and these characteristics deteriorate the performance in the communication system. In order to analyze the communication performance and investigate the correlation with multipath delay spread in a reverberant environment, an underwater acoustic communication experiment using Binary Phase-Shift Keying (BPSK) signals with symbol rates from 100 sym/s to 8000 sym/s was conducted in a 5 × 5 × 5 m3 water tank. The acoustic channels in a well-controlled tank environment had the characteristics of dense multipath delay spread due to multiple reflections from the interfaces and walls within the tank and showed the maximum excess delay of 40 ms or less, and the Root Mean Squared (RMS) delay spread of 8 ms or less. In this paper, the performances of Bit Error Rate (BER) and output Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) were analyzed using four types of communication demodulation techniques. And the parameter, Symbol interval to Delay spread Ratio in reverberant environment (SDRrev), which is the ratio of symbol interval to RMS delay spread in the reverberant environment is defined. Finally, the SDRrev was compared to the BER and the output SNR. The results present the reference symbol rate in which high communication performance can be guaranteed.

  • The biased zero-error probability and its related algorithms require heavy computational burden related with some summation operations at each iteration time. In this paper, a recursive approach to the biased zero-error probability and related algorithms are proposed, and compared in the simulation environment of shallow water communication channels with ambient noise of biased Gaussian and impulsive noise. The proposed recursive method has significantly reduced computational burden regardless of sample size, contrast to the original MBZEP algorithm with computational complexity proportional to sample size. With this computational efficiency the proposed algorithm, compared with the block-processing method, shows the equivalent robustness to multipath fading, biased Gaussian and impulsive noise.

  • In the underwater acoustic communication channels, multipath reflection become the cause of obstacle. Generally, equalizer has been applied to overcome these problems. In this paper, the method was proposed to optimize tap-length of decision feedback equalizer using genetic algorithm. After inputting feed-forward filter length and feed-back filter length as genetic information of the genetic algorithm, it optimize tap-length using BER(bit error rate) calculation in accordance with object function. The object function consist of decision feedback equalizer and BER calculation. For the purpose of BER calculation in the object function, the method was proposed to optimize the tap-length of decision feedback equalizer with genetic algorithm using preamble signals. As a result of experiments, the optimized BER is 0.0355 for signals which were received through a 25m receiver and which were applied to calculate BER merely using preamble signals in object function. When all data were used to calculate BER in object function, the optimized BER is 0.0215.
