  • The latch needle cam system of circular knitting machines is analysed using multibody dynamics. A formulation is made to obtain the vertical stiffness between the needle and the cam. By implementing this formulation into data of the multibody dynamics program, the motion and the force between the needle and the cam are obtained.

  • In this study, computational multi-body dynamic analyses for the drivetrain system of a 5 MW class offshore wind turbine have been conducted using efficient equivalent modeling technique based on the design guideline of GL 2010. The present drivetrain system is originally modeled and its related system data is adopted from the NREL 5 MW wind turbine model. Efficient computational method for the drivetrain system dynamics is proposed based on an international guideline for the certification of wind turbine. Structural dynamic behaviors of drivetrain system with blade, hub, shaft, gearbox, supports, brake disk, coupling, and electric generator have been analyzed and the results for natural frequency and equivalent torsional stiffness of the drivetrain system are presented in detail. It is finally shown that the present multi-body dynamic analysis method gives good agreement with the previous results of the 5 MW class wind turbine system.

  • This paper presents the dynamic analysis method for an electromechanical system. The engineer has at his disposal a variety of software simulation tools. However, difficulties arise when the study of the behavior of complex electromechanical systems in combination with coupling element is required. Typical examples of such systems are machines for factory automation, home automation, and office automation. Dynamic systems analysis packages or electronic systems analysis packages offer the restrictive to simulate these mixed systems such electromechanical product. Electronic circuit analysis algorithm is easily incorporated into a multi-body dynamics analysis algorithm. The governing equation of electronic circuit is formulated as a differential algebraic equation form including both electrical and mechanical variables and is simultaneously solved in every time step. This analysis method clearly demonstrates the application potential for mixed electromechanical simulation.

  • Two different subsystem synthesis methods with independent generalized coordinates have been developed and compared. In each formulation, the subsystem equations of motion are generated in terms of independent generalized coordinates. The first formulation is based on the relative Cartesian coordinates with respect to moving subsystem base (virtual) body. The second formulation is based on the relative joint coordinates using recursive formulation. Computational efficiency of the formulations has been compared theoretically by the operational counting method.

  • This study was conducted to analyze the stresses by impact loads on front-end loaders attached to tractors using flexible multi-body dynamics. The model was designed and validated by comparing previous experimental data with the simulation data obtained in this study. Nine sets of conditions were designed using three weights (500, 300, and 100 kg) loaded inside a bucket and three heights (1700, 1350, and 1000 mm) of the bucket from ground level. A parametric study was carried out at five locations for two types of parts of a front-end loader. All the safety factors for the five locations under all conditions were calculated and were greater than 1. Thus, the designs of the front-end loaders were structurally safe. Based on this study, front-end loaders attached to tractors can be designed effectively in terms of cost and safety.

  • A method for the dynamic analysis of multibody systems undertaking impulsive force is introduced in this paper. A partial velocity matrix based on Kane's method is introduced to reduce the number of equations to be solved. Only minimum number of equations of motion can be obtained by using the partial velocity matrix. This reduces the computational effort significantly to obtain the dynamic response of the system. At the very moment of the impulse, instead of using the numerical integrator to solve the equations of motion, the impulse and momentum principle is used to obtain the dynamic response. The impulse as wall as the reaction force acting on the kinematic joints can easily calculated too.

  • This paper presents a systematic methodology and formulation for determining optimal strategies of multi-body dynamic systems, which is based on multi-body dynamics, design sensitivity, and optimization techniques, and is applicable to a wide variety of mechanical systems. The particular application discussed in this paper considers a vehicle model with four-wheel steeling capability, and the presented methodology determines an optimal steering angle ratio strategy for the vehicle. It is shown that such a strategy can improve the ride stability of the vehicle, during a variety of maneuvers, when compared against similar strategies obtained from linear and simplified vehicle models.

  • A Web-based dynamic simulation system, called O-DYN, for multibody dynamic systems is developed. All the interfaces of the system are accessible via Web browsers, such as Netscape or Explorer. The system uses a block-diagram type O-DYN/Modeler developed in JAVA Applet as a preprocessor. The O-DYN postprocessor composed of O-DYN/Plotter and O-DYN/Animator is developed in JAVA Applet. The O-DYN/Solver for predicting the dynamic behavior is run on the server. Anyone who wants to simulate the dynamics of multibody systems or share results data can access the analysis system over the Internet regardless of their OS, platform, or location.
