  • The KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite-2 (KOMPSAT-2) is to provide 1.0 m Ground Sample Distance (GSD) panchromatic image and 4.0 m GSD multi-spectral image data for various applications. The KOMPSAT-2 system performs mission applications in the field of earth observations, covering land, sea, coastal zones, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The purpose of this document is to compute ground coordinate using satellite position, velocity and attitude data in KOMPSAT-2 and document for work-flow of location accuracy correction in KOMPSAT-2.

  • This special issue introduces recent researches on KOMPSAT(KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) image processing and applications. In this paper, the status of KOMPSAT development and national satellite image application policy are introduced and the implications of the papers presented in the special issue are discussed. Satellite image resources and application policy that can be utilized through continuous satellite development are considered to be systematically prepared. Therefore, if data processing and application technology development for various fields such as forest and urban change detection, image correction technology introduced in this paper are continuously carried out, it is expected that the competitiveness of national satellite image will be further strengthened.

  • To increase the utilization of the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) series imagery being developed pursuant to the national space development program, high quality images with enhanced locational accuracy should be created through standardized post-processing processes. In the present study, using the Value-Added Processing System(VAPS) constructed for the post-processing of KOMPSAT imagery, location correction experiments were conducted using KOMPSAT-2 and -3 imagery from domestic and overseas regions. First, 50 pieces from each of KOMPSAT-2 imagery were selected from South Korean and North Korean regions, and modeling was conducted using GCP Chips. According to the results, the Root Mean Square Errors(RMSE) for South Korea and North Korea were 1.59 pixels and 2.04 pixels, respectively, and the locational accuracy of ortho mosaic imagery using check points were 1.33m(RMSE) and 1.90m(RMSE), respectively. Meanwhile, in the case of overseas regions for which GCP could not be easily obtained, the improvement of locational accuracy could be identified through image corrections using Open Street Map(OSM). The VAPS and reference materials used in the present study are expected to be very useful in constructing a precise image DB for entire global regions.

  • The camera electronics in the KOMPSAT-3 payload provides the several control clocks in order to move the charges, which are converted from the light in the pixel, in the vertical and horizontal direction. Generally, the control clocks depend on the CCD internal design in the system. The KOMPSAT-3 payload uses the CCD controlled by 3-phase vertical clocks and 4-phase timing. The camera generates the various clocks such as the vertical clocks, the horizontal clocks, the summing clocks, the reset clocks and so on. The vertical clocks are deeply related to the camera performance and synchronized with satellite scan-rate even though they are relatively slow. Also, it gives the horizontal clocks without distortion under the very fast pixel-rate. This paper shows the design and simulation of the CCD clocks driver for the KOMPSAT-3 payload.

  • This paper describes playback downlink and telecommand uplink channel design performed for a transportable small-sized KOMPSAT(Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite) ground station. As a result of downlink channel design, required receiving performance was calculated from the threshold signal-to-noise ratio of playback signal and it was revealed that this performance can be guaranteed in 1.5 m ground station with 6.5 dB/K of G/T. For the uplink channel design, 40 dBW of EIRP was derived from the threshold signal-to-noise ratio of telecommand signal received at on-board receiver. The implemented small-sized ground station based on design was evaluated to be fully acceptable for KOMPSAT TT&C(Telemetry, Tracking and Command) system and playback downlink design without taking account of additional 3 dB system link margin was shown to be effective because it had provided constantly initial channel performance without any remarkable degradation over several years of tests with KOMPSAT and KOMPSAT-2, for both uplink and playback downlink in the elevation angle above $10^{\circ}$.
