Structural analysis for materials containing regularly spaced in-homogeneities is usually executed by using averaged material properties. For the homogenization process, a unit cell is defined and loaded somehow, and its response is investigated to evaluate the properties. The imposed loading conditions should accord to the behavior of unit cell immersed in the macroscopic structure in order to guarantee the accuracy of the effective properties. Each unit cell shows periodic variation of strain if the material is loaded uniformly, and in this study, direct implementation of this characteristic behavior is attempted on FE models of unit cell. Conventional finite element analysis tool can be used without any modification, and the boundary of unit cell is constrained in a way that the periodicity is satisfied. The proposed method is applicable to skew arrayed in-homogeneity problems. The flexibility matrix relating tonsorial stress and strain components in skewed rectilinear coordinate system is transformed so that the required engineering constants can be evaluated. Effective properties are computed for the materials with square and skew arrayed circular holes, and its accuracy is examined.
This paper dealt with an experimental study on the hydro-elastic vibration of clamped perforated rectangular plates submerged in water. The penetration of holes in the plates had a triangular pattern with P/D (pitch to diameter) 1.750, 2.125, 2.500, 3.000 and 3.750. The natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air were obtained by the analytical method based n the relation between the reference kinetic and maximum potential energy and compared with the experimental results. Good agreement between the results was found for the natural frequencies of the perforated plates in air. It was empirically found that the natural frequencies of the perforated plate in air increase with an increase of P/D, on the other hand, the natural frequencies of the perforated plate in contact with water decrease with an increase of P/D. Additionally, the effect of the submerged depth on the natural frequency was investigated.

The present experimental study investigates the impact of porous fins on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics in plate-fin heat exchangers. Systematic experiments have been carried out in a simplified model of a plate-porous fin heat exchanger at a controlled test environment. Comparison of performance between the porous fins and the conventional louvered fins has been made. The experimental results indicate that friction and heat transfer rate are significantly affected by permeability as well as porosity of the porous fin. The porous fins used in the present study show a similar air-side performance to the louvered fin. The correlations of friction and modified j-factor are also given for the design of the plate-porous fin heat exchanger.
In this study, a computational analysis is conducted to investigate the effects of porous surfaces on the lift and drag forces of the flat plate. With the porous treatment, it is found that the strength of the Karman vortex as well as its influences over the trailing-edge surface are much weakened, resulting in significant reduction of the pressure fluctuations over the flat plate. The drag and lift coefficients are decreased by 85% and 18%, respectively, compared to the solid surface. The computed results also indicate that the size of the porous surface area does not have much influences but the back side of the flat plate has non-negligible effects on the interaction between the wall and the Karman vortex. As a result, the lift coefficient for the solid back side case is decreased only by 50.5% compared to the solid case and the drag coefficient is even increased by 65%.
