A new test strip to detect leukocytes using the myeloperoxidase in urine was developed. The reagent strip contains tetramethylbenzine, glucose and glucose oxidase. The detection limit was between 10 cells per 1$\mu$l urine(5 cells/hpf), showing greenish yellow color in the range of 10-25 cells/$\mu$l, green color in the range of 75-250 cells/$\mu$l, greenish blue color in the range of 500 cells/$\mu$l. The result can be obtained within two minute. The performance of the new method was evaluated by comparing the results of microscopic examination and other commercial products. Good correlations were shown between the values obtained by our urine strip and those by other commercial products with 172 urine samples. The results were proven that new methods were useful as primary screening reagents to detect leukocytes in urine.

This study was performed to compare the level of odorous compounds in feces and urine of finishing pigs. Feces and urine from 16 finishing pigs were separately collected for 28-d. Concentrations of volatile organic compound (VOC; phenols and indoles) and volatile fatty acid (VFA; SCFA and BCFA) were measured in feces and urine. Amount of phenols and p-cresol was higher (P<0.05) in urine than in feces. Urinal levels of phenols and p-cresol were 257.8 ppm and 250.9 ppm, and those of fecal phenols and p-cresol were 0.50 ppm and 0.05 ppm, respectively. There was no difference in concentration of indoles from feces (1.0 ppm) and urine (1.8 ppm). Short chain fatty acid (SCFA) level in urine was higher (P<0.05) than in feces showing 4,547 ppm and 863 ppm, respectively. Proportion of acetic acid to total SCFA was higher in urine (94%) than in feces (66%). However, level of branched fatty acid (BCFA) was greater in feces (118 ppm) compare to that of urine (87 ppm). Odorous compounds analyzed in the current study, phenols and SCFA, were contained more in urine than in feces. Greater amount of VFA is typically found in feces than in urine since it is generated in the large intestine. However, urine contained more VFA than feces in the current study. Therefore, it will be necessary to exploit odor reducing techniques especially for pig urine as grassland fertilizer.

Objectives: Several studies suggest that nocturia may be related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). The mechanism by which OSAS develops nocturia has not been determined. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of nocturia among adults with OSAS and to identify factors that may be predictive in this regard. Methods: Retrospective review of clinical and polysomnographic data obtained from patients evaluated at the sleep clinics of the St. Paul's Hospital between 2009 and 2012. The urinary symptoms were assessed on the basis of the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). Pathologic nocturia was defined as two or more urination events per night. OSAS was defined as apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ${\geq}5$. A multivariate analysis using logistic regression was performed to examine the relationship between polysomnographic variables and the presence of pathologic nocturia, while controlling for confounding factor. Results: A total of 161 men >18 years of age (mean age $46.7{\pm}14.1$), who had been referred to a sleep laboratory, were included in the present study. Among these, 27 patients with primary snoring and 134 patients with obstructive sleep apnea were confirmed by polysomnography. Nocturia was found in 53 patients with OSAS (39.6%) and 8 patients with primary snoring (29.6%). The AHI was higher in patients with nocturia than in those without nocturia (p=0.001). OSAS patients with nocturia had higher arousal index (p=0.044), and lower nadir oxyhemoglobin saturation (p=0.001). Multiple regression analysis showed that age (${\beta}$=0.227, p=0.003), and AHI (${\beta}$=0.258, p=0.001) were associated with nocturia, and that the presence of pathologic nocturia was predicted by age (OR 1.04 ; p=0.004) and AHI (OR 1.02 ; p=0.001). Conclusion: Nocturia is common among patients with OSAS. The strongest predictors of nocturia are age and AHI in patients with OSAS.

The aim of this study was to assess the association of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and vitamin D and urine microalbumin (MA) in Korean adults. The study subjects were Korean adults 20 years or older (n=4,948). A covariance test adjusted for covariates was performed for urine MA levels in relation to vitamin D status (vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D insufficiency, vitamin D sufficiency). The key study results were as follows: First, in subjects without MetS, after adjusting for related variables (age, gender, smoking, drinking, regular exercising, wast measurement, body mass index, total cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, and glomerular filtration rate), vitamin D levels were inversely associated with Log-MA levels (p<0.001). Second, in subjects with MetS, after adjusting for related variables, vitamin D levels were not associated with Log-MA levels (p=0.892). In conclusion, vitamin D was inversely associated with urine MA levels in Korean adults without MetS, but not in Korean adults with MetS.
To obtain some results of the rate of abnormal keton body in urin of dairy animals by age calving rate, milk yield and some feeding and management condition, 104 cows and 107 dairy goats were investigated. And the results obtained were summerized as follows. 1. From about 23.1% of cows and 39.3% goats, abonormal condition of keton body in urine dectated. 2. The rate of abnormal keton bodies possession were lower at the age of 1~4 but higher at the age of 4~11. 3. From the calving animals, the highest rate of keton body were detected but the lowest from first and ninths calving animals. 4. The cows than 20kg milking per day and the goats 3~4kg milking were higher but the cows below 10kg milking and the goods 1~2kg milking were lower. 5. Under bad feeding and management condition, the amount keton bodies in urine of animals were increased much.
This study was aimed to determine the urinary metabolite of profenofos, one of the organophos-phorus pesticides, as the biomarkers of exposure. Urine samples were collected fort 24 hours in metabolic cages after oral administration and dermal application of profenofos to rats. Identification of the derivatized urinary metabolite was determined by GC/MS and excretion time courses of the urinary metabolite was analyzed by GC/MS. Urinary metabolite of profenofos, 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol, was detected in rats urine both after oral administration and dermal application of profenofos. Parent compound was not detected in the experiment. In GC/MS, the mass spectral confirmation for 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol ion was identified at m/z 208.4-bromo-2-chlorophenol was excreted within 48 hours and 72 hours after oral administration and dermal application of profenofos, respectively. In this study, the same urinary metabolite of profenofos was detected both in oral and dermal exposure. Generally, excretion of the urinary metabolite after oral administration was detected faster than after dermal application. It is suggested that urinary 4-bromo-2-chlorophenol could be used as the biomarkers of exposure to profenofos.
For the purpose of the determination of the most proper sampling time on using spot urine which can represent the general status of electrolytes in 24 hour urine and for test of the validity of filter paper method which was developed recently in estimation of the amount of daily salt intake, the author investigated this study by different sampling time and various measuring methods in 21 healthy men and 12 women. The summarized results were as follows; 1) The mean excretion amount of urinary electrolytes were Na 3.93 g/l, K 1.47 g/l, and creatinine 1.08 g/l in male, and Na 3.83 g/l, K 1.86 g/l, and creatinine 0.99 g/l in female. 2) In using spot urine for estimation of the amount of daily salt intake, morning urine was the most approximate to that of 24 hour urine in both sexes. 3) There was validity in estimation of daily salt intake by filter paper method using spot urine instead of 24 hour urine. 4) The estimated amounts of daily salt intake in male was higher than the values in female as 16.04-16.22 g and 13.35-13.82 g respectively.

We identified nicotine, cotinine and toluene in high school volunteer's urine by using GC/NPD, GC/FID and GC/MS. To analyze of nicotine and cotinine, urine samples were extracted with diethylether and centrifuged on a benchtop centrifuge for 5 min. The upper organic layer was injected into a GC. The distributions of nicotine and cotinine were $4{\sim}630{\mu}g/L$ and $63{\sim}1,602{\mu}g/L$ in smoking-group, respectively. To analyze of toluene, head space vial was filled with 2mL sodium citrate solution and 1mL of urine. The vial was warmed in a water bath at $55^{\circ}C$ for 20min, and then $250{\mu}L$ of head space air was injected into a GC. The result show that toluene was not detected in all of the volunteers' samples. However, the range of toluene was 0.1~28.0mg/L in glue sniffer's urine samples(NISI data).
