  • This study was conducted to investigate dietary factors, bone status, and bone loss in postmenopausal women in rural areas. A total of 189 women participated in the follow-up study after two years. Radius, Tibia, and Phalanx SOS (Speed of Sound) was measured on two occasions 2 years apart by ultra-sonic-metry, and % body fat was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis at the baseline and after 2years. Dietary intake data were collected 4 times at different season by 24-hour recall method, and then calculated as average. Bone density of radius decreased by 4.2% during the two year period. When the subjects were divided into three groups, by bone decline level during two years, the lowest bone loss group had higher potassium and vegetable intake than other groups. Age and calcium intakes showed significant correlation with bone decline rate at tibia. In multiple regressions, the baseline SOS, vitamin A, vegetables and eggs intakes were found to be significant factors for tibia bone decline. In conclusion, dietary factors, such as higher vegetable intake, seem to affect the changes in bone mineral density in more favorable way. Therefore, efforts are needed to enhance the access to nutritional care for rural elderly postmenopausal women.

  • The purpose of this study is to check if group art therapy is effective in improving self esteem and self integrity of rural elderly women. Study subjects are forty seven rural elderly women in A-city who have participated in producing specialized products in their rural area. They are divided into experimental group (EG, n=25) who wish to participate in the group art therapy program, a part of the A-city sponsored program named 'Making the Rural Elderly Happy', to improve and enhance the elderly's self esteem and self integrity, and control group (CG, n=22) with no wish to participate. However, only forty four elderly women are selected as the final study subjects for data analysis, due to those who either missed the program session more than once or died of old age during the program period. The group art therapy program was given from March 16 to May 18 of 2010, every Tuesday between 1pm through 3pm for a total of 12 sessions, with the help of two college student assistants in the region and one staff member for the city program. SPSS WIN version 12.0 is adopted to evaluate and analyze the effects of the therapy program, independent t-test for equivalence check of pretests, and frequency check for general characteristics of each group. The study results are obtained by the mean and standard deviation to grasp the changes between pretest and post-test on both groups, together with ANCOVA to evaluate effects of the therapy program with the pre-test as covariant. The results are as follows. First, self esteem of EG is significantly improved than that of CG after intervention of group art therapy. Second, self integrity is significantly higher in EG than CG after the group art therapy intervention. Therefore, it can be claimed that group art therapy is effective in improving and enhancing self esteem and self integrity of the rural elderly women.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the nutrients intakes of hypertensive female farmers in Korea. The number of subjects in this survey was 40(normal 22, hypertensive 18). Body weight, height, circumferences of waist, hip and thigh, and systolic and diastolic blood pressure of them were measured, and lipids and mineral levels of venous blood, mineral contents of 24-hour urine and Na or K levels of some sodium sources were analyzed. The evaluation of nutritional status was performed by recording dietary intake for a day and analyzing it with food composition table. Body weight, waist circumference, waist to thigh ratio, and serum triglyceride were higher in hypertensive. The mean values of calcium, vitamin B2 and niacin intakes of the subjects didn't meet the Korean recommended allowances though there was no significant difference in nutrients intake between two groups. The value of sodium intake presumed from content of sodium excreted to urine, and Na content and Na/K in Korean cabbage Kimchi was higher in hypertensive. These results suggest that reducing of serum triglyceride, decreasing of sodium intake and changing the taste for saltiness can help develop the health status of the rural female hypertensive and control the blood pressure of them.

  • In the near future, the multicultural families are expected to be the majority of population living in the rural area, which is an aged and small-scaled society. Moreover, they are expected to have an important role in sustaining the culture of agriculture and a rural community. Therefore, it is very important for them to adjust and settle urgently as well as to develop a policy and social services for the adjustment and settlement. The purpose of this study is to identify different aspects of the participation in agricultural, social, and job activities of married immigrant women in a Korean rural area as well as to investigate the change of life satisfaction resulting from the l activities. The following findings were established from this study. First, married immigrant women participate in local social and agricultural activities in a Korean rural area more frequently than in their own country. However, the frequency of their participation in job activity in a Korean rural area is lower than in their own country. Second, the main factor that prevents married immigrant women from participating in agricultural activity in a Korean rural area is to carry out childcare, household chores, and farming at the same time. Their low participation in social activity and job activity mostly results from their lack of fluency in Korean. Third, married immigrant women score higher in the change of life satisfaction after participating in social activity and job activity than in agricultural activity.

  • This study aims to identify the factors affecting the depression of elderly women in rural areas, by focusing on social network and sense of community. The questionnaires were conducted from July to September, 2016 by face-to-face interviews with the elderly women using the senior citizen center in rural areas. As a result, 302 questionnaires were collected, and of which 292 cases were utilized for the final analysis. The analysis revealed that socio-demographic characteristics, social network, and community consciousness had a significant effect on depression. The main results are summarized as follows. First, in first model, age, education, subjective health status, and subjective economic status were found to affect depression. Second, in second model, by adding the social network, the explanation power increased, and the social network of friends/neighbors were proven to be an influence on depression. Third, in third model, explanation power increased when sense of community was added, and it was proven that sense of community had an effect on depression. Finally, when the socio-demographic characteristics and the social network were controlled, the sense of community had more influence on the depression than the social network.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to compare health promotion behaviors and safety consciousness for elderly women living alone in rural areas and elderly women in group homes, and then provide information for the development of safety awareness programs for elderly. Methods: The participants were 120 elderly women living alone in rural areas aged 65 or older and 120 elderly women living in group homes. The data collection was conducted during November 2020, and the collected data used the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program to verify frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, and independent t test. Results: There were significant differences of health promotion behaviors between elderly women living alone and elderly women in group homes (t=15.77, p<.001). In addition, there were significant differences of safety consciousness between elderly women living alone and elderly women in group homes (t=21.42, p<.001). Conclusion: Since the safety consciousness and health promotion behaviors of the elderly in group homes are significantly higher than that of the elderly living alone, various programs should be developed to improve the safety consciousness and health promotion behaviors in the elderly living alone. Based on local government' acts, continuous support and attention is needed that elderly women in group homes can maintain a healthy life.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a living lab program to solve the musculoskeletal health problems of rural women and analyze its effects. Methods: The subjects included eight rural women and this study involved pretest and posttest designs for a single group. The program ran from July to August 2020 and consisted of one in-person training session and three weeks of management. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated by the change in the degree of pain experienced in the wrists, shoulders, and back, along with the general health status of the subjects. The Wilcoxon Sign-Rank test was used in the analysis. In addition, the program satisfaction was analyzed with five items based on the factors of the health belief model. Results: While the program seemed to have no significant impact on the health status of the subjects, all the participants did report reduced pain in their wrists, shoulders, and lower back. The 'sensitivity' and 'cue to action' metrics also increased with participation in the program. Conclusion: This program was effective in relieving some pain associated with the musculoskeletal problems in rural women. Therefore, such programs should be sustained and spread around community organizations
