An Estimation of the Acreage Response Function of Major Vegetables in Gyeongnam Province (경남지역 주요 채소류 재배면적 반응함수 추정)

  • This study estimated acreage response functions for greenhouse paprika, greenhouse strawberry, open-land garlic, and open-land spinach by using Gyeongsangnamdo agricultural income data. The results show that the cultivation area for greenhouse paprika increased because the agricultural management costs decreased, and the risk of price volatility was relatively low. On the other hand, the cultivation area for greenhouse strawberries decreased due to increasing agricultural management costs and the greater risk of price volatility. In the case of open-land garlic and spinach, the cultivation area remained stagnant due to the greater risk of price volatility, despite increasing agricultural revenue. We derived several policy implications from our results. The risk of price volatility in agricultural products is greater for crops grown on land rather than crops grown in greenhouses. Therefore, the local government needs to adopt the "agricultural revenue guarantee insurance" in preference to crops grown on land rather than crops grown in greenhouses. On the other hand, in the case of greenhouse crops, agricultural management costs are very high. Thus, local government should focus on replacing old facilities and supplying smart-farm facilities that reduce agricultural management costs such as heating costs.

Comparison of characteristic aroma compounds in Korean wild chive (Allium monanthum Maxim.) cultivated in open-fields or greenhouses (노지와 시설 재배 달래의 특징적인 향기 성분 비교)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze volatile and aroma-active compounds in Korean wild chive (Allium monanthum Maxim.) cultivated in open-fields or greenhouse systems using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation-gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry and GC-olfactometry. Aroma-active compounds were evaluated using aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). Twenty-two aroma-active compounds with log2 flavor dilutions (FD) of 1-10 were detected in Korean wild chive, which was cultivated in an open-field or a greenhouse. 2-Isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine ("earthy"), 2-sec-butyl-3-methoxypyrazine ("earthy", "musty"), and dipropyl disulfide ("sulfurous") were the most predominant aroma-active compounds with log2FD of 9-10; this was followed by dimethyl trisulfide ("onion-like") and (E)-1-propenyl propyl disulfide ("fresh onion-like"). The "sulfurous", "earthy", "pungent", and "cabbage-like" aroma notes were strong in Korean wild chive. More intense "pungent" odors were detected in Korean wild chive cultivated in an open-field, whereas more intense "cabbage-like" odors were detected in Korean wild chive cultivated in a greenhouse.

Study on the over-wintering stage of citrus leaf miner Phyllocnistis citrella Stainton(Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) in Jeju, Korea (제주도 노지재배 감귤원 내 귤굴나방 월동태 구명)

  • Citrus leafminer (Phyllocnistis citrella) is an economically important pest in citrus orchards. This study was conducted to elucidate the over-wintering stage of P. citrella through experiments on the survival rate of P. citrella at low temperatures and field investigations during the winter season. There was a significant difference in the survival period depending upon the over-wintering stage of P. citrella at low temperatures, and the adults survived longer than the pupae. Evaluation of the survival period after inoculating citrus orchards with P. citrella adults and pupae showed that only the adults survived until mid-March of the following year, but all pupae died in January. This suggests that considering the fact that the germination of spring shoots in Jeju generally begins in mid-March, over-wintering adults are likely to form an early population the next year. However, pupae may not contribute to the formation of the initial population in the early season after wintering in fall shoots that are prone to freezing damage in winter because P. citrella could only survive in pupal chambers formed in fall shoots. Therefore, these results suggest that P. citrella adults that emerge in late autumn can over-winter in citrus orchards in Jeju, Korea.

  • 곤달비(Ligularia stenocephala)는 쌍떡잎식물, 국화과의 다년생 초본식물로서 한국·일본·타이완·중국 등에 분포하며, 우리나라에는 전남 홍도가 특산 자생지라고 하며 주로 강원도, 경북 경주, 전북 남원 등지에서 재배되고 있다. 곤달비는 어린 부분을 생채, 데친 나물, 국거리, 튀김, 묵나물로 식용한다. 특수 성분으로는 Isopropenyl, dimethoxybenzofuran, Liguhodgsonal, Ligujapon, Ligularinone A, Ligularinone B 등이며 신경을 안정시키는 진정작용, 진통억제, 정기를 보익하고 허약함을 보하는 기능이 있고, 한방에서는 뿌리가 신경통, 유종(乳腫) 등에 쓰인다. 곤달비는 주로 시설하우스나 노동력이 많이 드는 임간에서 재배되어 생산 단가가 높아 소비활성화를 위한 가공제품을 생산하기가 힘들다. 본 연구는 곤달비를 저비용 대량 생산을 위한 노지재배 생력화 재배기술을 확립하고자 시험을 수행하였다. 2019년 4월부터 2020년 11월까지 전라북도 농업기술원 허브산채시험장(해발 500m)에서 곤달비 노지재배를 대상으로 이랑폭 90cm, 120cm, 180cm 3처리구로 하여 시기별 생육특성, 수량성, 생리장해 등을 조사하였다. 2019년 4월 정식 후 활착률은 180cm 처리구에서 92.1%로 가장 높았고 120cm 처리에서 90.2%로 가장 낮았으며, 생존율 또한 180cm 처리구에서 87.2%로 가장 높았고 120cm 처리에서 84.4%로 가장 낮았다. 생육특성 결과 1차년도에는 초장, 엽장, 엽폭은 생육 초기부터 후기까지 90cm 처리구에서 가장 높았고, 엽수는 120cm 처리구에서 가장 많았다. 2차년에는 180cm 처리구에서 초장 61.2cm, 엽장 32.6cm, 엽폭 31.3cm, 엽수 12.7개/주로 다른 처리구에 비해 좋은 생육상태를 보였다. 이랑폭별 수확량은 180cm에서 1,073.7kg/10a로 120cm 955.7kg/10a, 90cm 923.3/kg/10a 비해 높은 수량성을 보였다. 생리장해는 2020년 3월 저온으로 인한 냉해를 출현 초기에 모든 처리구에서 받았다. 곤달비 노지재배 발생하는 병해충은 나비·나방류, 노린재류 3종류이며 그 중 점무늬병은 모든 처리구에서 30% 이상 피해가 나타났다.

Changes of Soil Temperature and Moisture under the Agrivoltaic Systems in Fallow Paddy Field during Spring Season (봄철 영농형 태양광 시설 하부 휴경논 토양의 온도와 수분 변화)

  • An agrivoltaic system (AVS) is a combined system that generates power through photovoltaic panels (PVPs) installed above a field where a crop is cultivated. Although soil moisture is an important limiting factor for open-field crop production, particularly during spring season in Korea, it is not well considered in the utilization of AVS. Indeed, the application of water-energy-food nexus on the AVS should be necessary. In this study, the changes of soil moisture and temperature under the AVS was investigated in fallow paddy field during spring season. The AVS that has partial shading condition by PV panels was decreased soil temperature and increased soil moisture compared to open-field. Furthermore, the maximum of the change in soil moisture to the change in soil temperature had a negative correlation both on open-field and AVS under wet condition. It represents that the micro-climate under the AVS is in energy-limited condition. The open-field of relatively high soil temperature was in water-limited condition. The different behavior of soil moisture on the AVS should be considered for the sustainable agricultural system as related to water-energy-food nexus.

Comparison of Plant Growth Characteristics and Biological Activities of Four Asparagus Cultivars by Cultural Method (재배방법에 따른 아스파라거스 4 품종의 생장과 생리활성 비교)

  • In the present study, we investigated the plant growth characteristics and biological activity of four asparagus cultivars grown using two cultural methods and tested the possibility of domestic open field. The number of shoots, buds, roots, shoot and root fresh and dry weights, and total dry weight of the four asparagus cultivars grown in a plastic house were higher than those of the same cultivars grown in an open field. Of the cultivars grown in the open field, Jersey Giant had greater shoot number than the other cultivars. In plastic house cultivation, the number of buds in Jersey Supreme was greater than the other cultivars. The total flavonoid content of the Jersey Giant was greater than the other cultivars, but cultural method was unaffected. The total polyphenol contents in asparagus cultivars grown in the plastic house were higher than those of cultivars grown in the open field. The total polyphenol content of the Jersey Giant grown the plastic house was significantly higher than those of other cultivars. Antioxidant activity such as catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POX) did not differ significantly with cultural methods and among the cultivars. Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activity of asparagus cultivars grown in the open field was higher than that of cultivars grown in the greenhouse; the highest APX activity was detected in UC157. Thus, greenhouse cultivation is expected to improve plant growth characteristics and biological activities of asparagus cultivars; each cultural method should be considered when selecting a suitable cultivar for high yield and high bioactive compound content.

Physicochemical Characteristics and Antioxidant Activities of Mulberries by Greenhouse and Open Field Cultivation in Maturation Degrees (시설 및 노지 재배한 오디의 숙기별 이화학적 품질 및 항산화 활성)

  • This study was conducted in order to compare changes in the quality characteristics and antioxidant activity of mulberries depending on the degree of ripeness between greenhouse (GH) and open field (OF) cultivation. The mulberries were divided into five degrees of ripeness. Quality characteristics such as pH, acidity, antioxidant activity, and contents of free sugar, organic acid, polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins were investigated. pH level increased slightly while acidity decreased depending on the degree of ripeness. Fructose and glucose were detected in mulberries as the major free sugar. Fructose and glucose increased rapidly during ripening. Citric acid was major acid and decreased considerably during ripening. Contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins increased considerably in the last stage of ripening. Contents of polyphenols, and flavonoids in mulberry from OF were higher than from GH. DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities increased rapidly in mulberries of the last degree. Contents of functional components were not greatly different between GH and OF, whereas content of free sugar in GH was higher than that in OF.

Influence of El Niño on the Production of Spring Kimchi Cabbage in South Korea (국내 노지 봄배추 생산량에 대한 엘니뇨 영향)

  • El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ would cause extreme weather conditions, which would result in a negative impact on crop production. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ on spring kimchi cabbabe production for the period from 1981- 2016 in South Korea. In this study, years with less than 1.0 Oceanic $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ index were classified into non El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years. The other years were classified as El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years. The national average production of spring kimchi cabbage in El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years ($3,800kg\;10a^{-1}$) tended to be less than that in non El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years ($4,016kg\;10a^{-1}$). However, there was no significant differences (p = 0.078) in the production between these groups of years. The averaged production of spring kimchi cabbage of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ end years ($3,707{\pm}331kg\;10a^{-1}$) was less than those of El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ start years and non El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years by 186 and $309kg\;10a^{-1}$, respectively. Still, such difference was not significant statistically (p=0.127), either. In contrast, there were provinces where the production of spring kimchi cabbage had significant differences by El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ occurrence. For example, El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ end years had significantly less spring kimchi cabbage production than El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ start years and non El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years in Gangwon (p=0.038) and Gyeongbuk (p=0.053) provinces. It appeared that differences in cabbage production resulted from short sunshine duration, which merits further analysis on the impact of extreme weather condtions during El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ years on crop production.
