  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of social supports on the relationship between grief level and suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone. Methods: We analyzed data from a questionnaire administered to subjects aged 65 years or older living alone for a 2017 community mental health project in Gyeongnam S city. To investigate the moderating effects of variables, we conducted a hierarchial regression analysis and confirmed the change $R^2$. Results: When adjusted for education and economic level, grief level had not a direct impact on suicidal ideation. And it was found that interdependent social support was moderating variables in the relationship of grief level and suicidal ideation of the elderly living alone. Conclusions: There is a need for appropriate programs that reduce suicidal ideation and therefore suicidal action. Moreover, it is especially necessary to enhance interdependent social supports.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between household types and suicide ideation among elderly people in Korea. We collected information on 220 elderly individuals(aging over 60), 171 of whom were living alone and 49 of whom were living with their families. The results showed that; 1) number of children, health status, level of stress, and depressive symptoms were all related to the suicide ideation among both groups, and 2) individuals living alone had lower sense of control, were more stressed, and more likely to suffer from depression. Based on these results, various implications were discussed and practical suggestions provided.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Happy Village Convergence Program on the depression, meaning of life and suicidal ideation in rural elderly women. The participants of this study were 25 elderly women aged 65 years or older in G province (12 experimental group and 13 control group). The data collected from January 10, 2019 to March 14, 2019. The experimental group participated in the 10-session program, once a week for 60 minutes. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ${\chi}^2-test$, and t-test. There were significant differences in depression (t = -2.195, p <.05) and meaning of life (t = 2.757, p <.05) in the experimental group compared to the control group. Therefore, the program was effective in rural women. We propose further study to confirm the usefulness of the program by expanding the gender and area.

  • The purpose of this study was to present the empirical data for the prevention of suicide by analyzing the group differences according to the types of risk factors and protective factors of family members living with dementia patients and the effects of each type on suicidal ideation. This study investigated the characteristics of suicidal ideation among family members of people living with dementia by using a community health survey. It then investigated the effect of each latent group on the suicidal ideation of family members of people living with dementia. Twenty-four risk and protective factors on suicide ideation were analyzed by using Mplus. The four latent classes were high risk - low protective, high risk - high protective, low risk - high protective and low risk - low protective. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the high risk-low protective factor group had the highest suicidal ideation. Based on these results, practical implications and challenges were presented.

  • This study investigated what factors would affect suicidal ideation of the people who have received public assistance. For the purpose, the survey results of the 7th year(2012) of Korea Welfare Panel Study, which were conducted by Korea Institute for health and Social Affairs and Social Welfare Research Institute of Seoul National University, were used for analysis. In order to figure out the level of influence on the suicidal ideation, a binary logistic regression analysis using a binary logistic model was used as an analysis method. As a result, it was found that when the subjects are middle school graduates, and if they are married, there are low suicidal ideation. Also, the higher their self-esteem is and the higher their satisfaction with public assistance, the lower there they have suicidal ideation. Furthermore, it was proved that if they have depression, or in middle age, they have high possibility of suicidal ideation. It was proved that satisfaction with public assistance also can have influence on the suicidal ideation of the poor class, not only physical and psychological factors. Therefore, measuring the satisfaction of the recipients with public assistance can be one of the significant factors that affects suicidal ideation.

  • The present study empirically confirmed Korean elder's four major pains consisted of poverty, disease, role loss, loneliness and investigated the mediating role of depression between the four major pains and the elder's suicidal thought. To investigate the cause and effect of factors, we conveniently collected 309 samples from 16 Gyungrodangs evenly located in Jeonju and 291 samples, survived the data cleaning such as missing values, outliers, normality and covariance conditions, were analyzed by frequency, factor analysis, reliability, confirmatory factor analysis and structural model analysis. Followed were the selected contributions of the present study. First, the constructs of four major pains such as poverty, disease, role loss, loneliness were predictors of suicidal thought mediated by depression. Second, the elder's poverty, that was the heaviest factor of the four major pain constructs, was a predictor of role loss leading to loneliness. Third, four major pains were predictors of the elder's depression. Note that poverty were not direct but indirect predictor of depression. The present study confirmed the concept of four major pains. Also those who practice in the area of the elderly care should consider the four major pains as well as depression while intervening in the elderly's suicidal thought.

  • This study's aim was to attest social support and self-efficacy's mediation effects in the path which social participation affected to elderly's suicidal ideation. Analysis data were Seoul Welfare Panel Data 2th wave(2010). A total of 1,429 cases aged over 65 were used for this study. Analysis method was AMOS 18.0's Structural Equation Modeling, and sobel test was used for attesting mediation effects's significance degree. Analysis results had established that measurement model and structural model's fit was favorable, and all path coefficients had significance degree. Therefore, this model was suitable for this study. Also this results had proved that this study's model was full mediation model, and it means that if mediation variables controlled, and then direct effect was excluded. And analysis results confirmed social support and self-efficacy' mediation effect had significance, by using a sobel test. Based on analysis results, this study suggested the importance of relationship between secondary group and individual, and presented intervention plans.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical activity, diet and mental health of elderly and to use the study as basic data for a program development for elderly. This was a secondary data analysis study using the 2015 National Health and Nutrition Survey and the study subjects included 1,484 individuals aged 65 and over. The results showed that depression and stress perception in young-old were higher than old-old's and the suicidal ideation rate of old-old was higher than young-old's. In case of eating patterns, 'poor eating' in old-old was higher than young old's. Regression analysis showed that middle-intensity physical activity and eating patterns were associated with mental health of the elderly. Based on the results, it is necessary to develop a differentiated nursing intervention program suitable for the elderly by age.

  • The aim of this paper is to examine the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk among adolescents, adults, and the elderly. To achieve the research aim, surveys were conducted in 10 cities across the country for 399 adolescents, 473 adults, and 370 elderly from May to August 2010. Major findings of the data analysis are as follows. First, while, in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk, the elderly were the highest, followed by adolescents and adults in descending order, in family cohesion, adults were the highest, followed by the elderly and adolescents. Second, the analysis of the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk showed that it was significant only for adolescents and adults, which means that for those two groups family cohesion alleviates the effects of depression on suicidal risk, demonstrating the necessity of strengthening family cohesion to reduce suicides among the two groups of people. But, for the elderly for whom family relationship is more important than any other age group, the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk was not proved. The interpretation of this phenomenon is given in the part of the paper where the characteristics of the suicide of the old age group is discussed.
