This study was performed to propose the developmental direction of the elderly suicide study by analyzing the trend of study in elderly suicide. A literature search was conducted using RISS, KISS, Nanet. A total of 184 research articles which were published on elderly suicide in Korea from 1996 to 2013 were analyzed with structured analysis forms. For statistical analysis, frequency and percentage were used with EXCEL program. As a results, a study on elderly suicide in the social welfare sector was actively and a survey of general elderly proportion of the study was high. In addition, most concepts of research were associated with suicidal ideation, depression, social support, and stress of the elderly. Therefore, existing in previous studies classified as high-risk elderly people living alone, poor elderly, a man who attempted suicide risk in elderly subjects research through a variety of research methods will be made.
This study examined the effect of emotional factors, physical factors and socioeconomic factors on suicidal ideation of 75 or older seniors and sought to identify what kinds of factors should be satisfied to prevent their suicide. Using "2017 National Survey of the Elderly", the study conducted survey among 75 or older 3,023 males and 1,295 females. It used multivariate logistic regression analysis to identify the factors affecting suicidal ideation. As a result, the study found that ties with their offspring, the number of chronic diseases, being abused or not, depression and living with or without espouse had significant effects on their suicidal ideation and abuse was the largest factor. Therefore, in order to reduce suicide rate of 75 or older seniors, more active attention should be rendered to their physical, socioeconomic and emotional health problems, and measures to reduce elderly abuse should be sought. In particular, institutional improvement and revitalization of elderly counseling institutions are needed to reduce elder abuse
While late-life suicide has been increasing and become an important issue for public health in Korea, little is known about the phenomenon and its contributing risk factors based on which effective preventive measures can be made. Since suicidal ideation is a major precursor to attempted and completed suicide, the objective of the present study was to reveal primary contributors to suicidal ideation. Data were collected from a cross-sectional survey of 247 community-dwelling Korean older adults (age≥60) in the mid-size city in Korea. The statistical methodology employed a robust hierarchical regression procedure that iteratively downweights outliers. Based on the stress-diathesis model, the study examined major diathesis and stressors directly explaining suicidal ideation. The study also explored the significant interaction among these factors. The findings revealed that living alone and depression were significant main antecedents of suicidal ideation. In addition, neuroticism X life events and neuroticism X depression were significant interaction terms with the strongest explanatory power, which provides an empirical evidence to support the stress-diathesis model in explaining suicidal phenomenon of the Korean elderly. The result demonstrates the theoretical implication as well as the practical implication for developing and implementing late-life suicide prevention strategies. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.
This study attempts to explain how depression among community elderly relate to suicidal ideation and whether or not the psycho-social characteristics of elderly persons moderate the relationship between these two variables. This study was conducted in Seoul, Busan, and Daegu and included 273 persons 65 years and above who were using senior welfare centers in the communities. For the questionnaire and analysis, this research uses the Health Care, Life Event, Self-esteem, Family Assessment scales. This research utilizes a wide range of statistical analyses, such as descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, reliability analysis, multiple regression, and general linear modeling. The calculations employed the use of SPSS/PC+ 12.0. This research indicates, among other things, that elderly persons with a high level of depression and psycho-social characteristics show a tendency toward higher suicidal ideation and that the level of self-esteem, life event, and family communication plays a moderating role in the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation among community elderly. In conclusion, elderly persons who experienced with a high level of psycho-social characteristics shows a relatively greater tendency toward suicidal ideation when compared to elderly persons having a low level of psycho-social characteristics. The intervention's effectiveness in reducing suicidal ideation can reinforce self-esteem, and cope with stressful life events and family discord as prevention strategy to reduce risk factors for suicide in late life.
The purpose of this research is to verify that adjustment resilience has a moderating effect on the influence of social exclusion regarding suicide in senior citizens, and the research results are as follows: First, the demographic sociological factors that affect suicidal impulse have been shown to be age, education level, marriage status, and child co-residence. Senior citizens between the ages of 75 and 80 have been shown to have the most suicidal impulses, whereas the tendency to have such suicidal impulses increases as the level of education decreases. Furthermore, those seniors who are unmarried or single due to divorce, death, or separation and those who do not live with their children tended to have stronger, more frequent suicidal impulses. Second, seniors have been shown to suffer stronger suicidal impulse when subjected to more serious social exclusion. Third, it has been verified that adjustment resilience has a strong moderating effect on the influence of social exclusion regarding the suicidal impulses of senior citizens. Last, the results of the inclination test (Hypothesis Test for Slope of Inclination) have shown that adjustment resilience tends to be lower in the group that is more socially excluded. The purpose of this research is to suggest the direction of social policy creation in order to prevent suicide by senior citizens and set forth the practical implication regarding adjustment resilience as a protection factor for further studies.
In the super-aged societies, an increased elderly population living in solitude has been causing many problems. Since the elderly may incur a sense of loss and interest in suicide when living alone, this study investigated the effects of smartphones as well as types of living arrangements on elderly peoples' sense of loss and suicidal thoughts. This study found social roles and relationships were lower for older individuals using smartphones than those using 2G phones. Not surprisingly, those living with family members or a partner had significantly fewer suicidal thoughts than those living in solitude. However, our results indicate subjects' loss of role and relationships was affected more significantly by their smartphone usage (2G phone vs. smartphone) rather than their living arrangements (i.e., living with family or a partner vs. living in solitude). Moreover, smartphone users showed a lower sense of loss in terms of social roles and relationships. Among the elderly, loss of health, social role, and relationships were identified as precedents for increased suicidal thoughts; yet, economic capacity was surprisingly not an indicator of suicidal thoughts.
The purpose of this study is to understand the relationship between anxiety, sleep disturbance, and suicide ideation in the elderly using senior welfare centers and to identify factors influencing suicide ideation. Data were collected from January 6 to February 7, 2020 from 206 elders who analyzed using SPSS/Win 25.0 with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficients, multiple regression analysis. anxiety, sleep disturbance, suicide ideation were positively correlated. Meanwhile, factor affecting suicide ideation were anxiety(β=.215, p=.001), sleep disturbance(β=.383, p<.001) and the explanatory power of suicide ideation was 27.3%. Therefore, in order to prevent suicide ideation, it will be necessary to develop an intervention program to maintain qualitative sleep and lower anxiety levels.
The aim of this paper is to examine the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk among adolescents, adults, and the elderly. To achieve the research aim, surveys were conducted in 10 cities across the country for 399 adolescents, 473 adults, and 370 elderly from May to August 2010. Major findings of the data analysis are as follows. First, while, in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk, the elderly were the highest, followed by adolescents and adults in descending order, in family cohesion, adults were the highest, followed by the elderly and adolescents. Second, the analysis of the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk showed that it was significant only for adolescents and adults, which means that for those two groups family cohesion alleviates the effects of depression on suicidal risk, demonstrating the necessity of strengthening family cohesion to reduce suicides among the two groups of people. But, for the elderly for whom family relationship is more important than any other age group, the buffering effect of family cohesion in the relationship between depression and suicidal risk was not proved. The interpretation of this phenomenon is given in the part of the paper where the characteristics of the suicide of the old age group is discussed.
