Effects of Elderly problem drinking DB Information on suicidal thoughts. Focusing on the mediating effect of depression and self-esteem (노인의 문제음주 DB 정보가 자살생각에 미치는 영향 : 우울과 자아존중감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • In this study, 8th Korea Welfare Panel data surveys utilizing 65 years age or older, problem drinking analyzed the impact on suicidal thoughts as a medium for depression and self-esteem. In the main analysis, First, Problem drinking appears to influence the level of statistically significant positive (+) of suicidal thoughts. Second, Depression was found to mediate the relationship between the full level of problem drinking and suicidal thoughts. Third, Problem drinking was found not appear to be significant influence on self-esteem is not the mediating effect of self-esteem. However, the higher level of problem drinking, the lower level of self-esteem, through the sign of regression coefficient is negative (-) potential of the relationship was confirmed. These results suggest that more systematic research is necessary for the elderly suicide with preparing for the elderly of problem drinking.

Effects of Problem Drinking of Elderly on Life Satisfaction Mediated by Depression and Self-esteem: A Latent Means Analysis Application between Poor and Non-poor Elderly (노인 문제음주가 우울, 자아존중감을 매개로 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향: 빈곤노인 및 비빈곤노인 집단에 대한 잠재평균분석의 적용)

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the structural causal relationships among problem drinking of elderly, depression, self-esteem and life satisfaction through structural Equation Modeling and also to investigate how these effects were influenced by the differences in the structural relationships between poor and non-poor elderly. The results showed the positive relationship between problem drinking and depression not also poor elderly group but non-poor elderlys'. According to Multi-group analysis, Latent means analysis where non-poor elderly are used as the reference group, poor elderly group showed higher latent mean values on the problemdrinking and depression, and lower latent mean values on the self-esteem and life satisfaction. Depression mediated the relationships between problem drinking of elderly and life satisfaction the only in a poor elderly group. The implications and limitations of this study were discussed, and the suggestions for further studies were recommended.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of factors like self-esteem, social support, empowerment on the life satisfaction of the elderly participating in the senior employment project. As a result, self-esteem, social support, and empowerment show significant effects on the life satisfaction of the elderly participating in the senior employment project. In other words, when the elderly participating in the senior employment project have higher self-esteem, social support, and empowerment, their life satisfaction becomes higher, too. Based on the findings, this author will make political suggestions as follows: first, it is needed to develop and distribute new employment programs to improve their self-esteem. Second, it is necessary to form new social support networks and develop and connect resources. Third, the empowerment approach to provide customized employment suitable for the needs of the elderly is necessary.

A study on predictive factors of Elderly Suicidal Ideation (노인의 자살생각 예측요인)

  • This study describes predictive factors for elderly suicidal ideation by analyzing the survey data from 359 people who were over 65 years old in Daegu, Korea. The mean score of social support(3.35), self-esteem(3.38), depression(8.64) and suicidal ideation(1.65) of elderly residence. Social support, self-esteem and suicidal ideation had negative correlation. Depression and suicidal ideation had positive correlation. Suicidal ideation was significantly different according to age, education, spouse, living arrangement, type of medical guarantee, pocket money, past job, leisure(time), health status, number of chronic disease, smoking. Others support, self-esteem, pocket money, education, age were influencing factors of suicidal ideation(48.2%). Among them, 41.8% of others support was.

Effects of Bibliotherapy of Dotard Dementias Old Adults (독서요법이 경증 치매노인에게 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of bibliotherapy on the levels of cognitive function, depression, and social behavior in the elderly with mild dementia. For this quasi-experimental research, a total of 166 subjects the age of from 90 to 65 were selected of the 166, were divided into the experimental group and control group for six months. These findings confirmed that the dementia Bibliotherapy program made a contribution to improve cognitive function and social behavior, and to reduce depression in the elderly with mild dementia. Therefore, it is recommended that this program be used in clinical practice as an effective Bibliotherapy program for the elderly with mild dementia.

Relation between Communication Skills and Self-Esteem of the Institutionalized Elderly -Focusing on the Free Institutionalized Elderly in Gangwon-do Area- (시설거주 노인의 의사소통 기술과 자아존중감의 관계 -강원도 지역 무료양로시설을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between communication skills and self-esteem of the elderly living in public institutions, this study divided the communication skill of the aged into 5 subsidiary factors such as self-understanding, attentive listening, clear expression of intention, expression of personal feeling, and self-disclosure so as to grasp the relation between each variables and self-esteem and to search suggestions. For the methodology, senior citizens aged above 65 living in public institutions in Gangwon province (1 in Chuncheon, 1 in Wonjoo and 1 in Gangneung) were surveyed totaling 123 documents were analyzed for this study. The following are the results: First, the difference in communication skills, in the demographic and sociological characteristics are found to show significant difference in hobbies, religion, allowance and the most reliable person. Second, self-esteem, in the demographic and sociological characteristics, showed significant difference according to religion, whether the person pays his/her living expenses, hobbies and health conditions. Third, communication skills tend to influence self-esteem that an elderly with more self-esteem is shown to have higher communication skills. In order to elders living in public institutions, the following actions are suggested. They should be recommended with religion life, hobbies life and providing sufficient allowance, pay his/her own life expenses.

Appearance concern, attitude toward cosmetic surgery, self-esteem, and quality of life in women of the 60s and 70s (60-70대 여성노인의 외모관심도, 미용성형에 대한 태도, 자아존중감 및 삶의 질)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate appearance concern, attitude toward cosmetic surgery, self-esteem, quality of life, and to identify affecting factors of quality of life on elderly women. The subjects consisted of 162 elderly women in the G city. The variables were measured using questionnaires, analyzed using descriptive statistic, ${\chi}^2-test$, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis. The appearance concern, attitude toward cosmetic surgery were not significant difference in 60s and 70s. Quality of life was significant difference in 60s and 70s. Factors influencing quality of life in 60s were self-esteem, perceived health status, and explanation of quality of life is 39.1%. In 70s were self-esteem, level of education, and explanation of quality of life is 41.7%. These results suggest that it is necessary for aging preparation education included appearance concern and should be made to develop program to improve quality of life.

Self-Esteem and Depression of the Elderly People Living Alone (독거노인의 자아존중감과 우울)

  • This study aims to investigate the related variables of self-esteem and depression among the Korean elderly people living alone and examine the relationships or interactions between those variables. Participants were 676 elderly men and women who were at least 65 years of age(M=76.17, sd=7.60) and lived in Seoul, Korea. Three hundred seventy eight participants of this study were living alone. Participants completed questionnaires and psychological tests including: Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale, Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale, The Index of Activities of Daily Living(IADL), Social Support Index(SSI), and Life Satisfaction in the Elderly Scale(LSES). Main statistical designs were 2(gender)×2(residential types), Pearson-product moment and regression analysis. Results indicated that the elderly living alone recognized their health poorer, have lower economic status, and received less social supports than the elderly lived with others. The elderly men who had children were more likely to lived alone. And the elderly men living alone received less social supports than the elderly women living alone, and significant gender difference was found in the reason of living alone. The elderly men living alone had lower self-esteem than the elderly women living alone, while the elderly living alone showed more depressive symptoms than the elderly living with others. There were 2-way interactions both in self-esteem and depression by gender and residential types. There was highly significant gender difference in self-esteem only for the elderly living alone, and it was found that there was no significant difference in depression between elderly men living alone and women living with others. Regression analysis revealed that physical function and self-reported health are predictors of self-esteem, and physical function, self-reported health, and social support are predictors of depression for the Korean elderly living alone. These findings reiterate the role of physical function, social support, health in self-esteem and depession among the elderly and suggest the gender role for quality of life among the Korean elderly living alone.

The Effect of Stress on Depression of the Elderly: Focusing on the Moderating Effect of Social Support and Mediating Effect of Sense of Self-Respect (스트레스가 노인의 우울에 미치는 영향: 사회적 지지의 조절효과와 자아존중감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The objective of the current study is to verify the moderating effect of social support and mediating effect of sense of self-respect in the impact of stress on depression of the elderly. The subjects of the study are 485 people aged 65 or above who use a comprehensive social welfare center. First, in the effect of stress on depression of elderly people, family issues, health issues, economic issues, and feeling of loss were found to be significant. Second, in the impact of self-respect in the elderly on their depression, family issues, economic issues, and feeling of loss were found to have a mediating effect on depression, but not with health issues. Third, in the impact of social support to the elderly on the relationship between their stress and depression, the moderating effect of social support on depression was found to have a negative value. Based on these findings, the study suggests practical implications on social welfare in reducing depression experienced by the elderly.

Effects of the Physical and Social Characteristics of Elderly Women on Self-Esteem and Life Satisfaction (여성 노인의 신체적·사회적 특성이 자아존중감 및 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study analyzed the factors of the physical and social characteristics, self-esteem as well as life satisfaction of elderly women, and analyzed the effects of the physical and social characteristics on self-esteem and life satisfaction. The survey was conducted from January 10 to February 10, 2011 among the elderly women aged 60 or older in the Guri-si and its environs of Gyeonggi-do, and 380 responses were used in the data analysis. The statistical analysis methods were frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, t-test, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. As a result, the physical characteristics of elderly women were classified by the activities of daily living(ADL), physical function, and disease status. The social characteristics of elderly women were classified by the religious and social activities. ADL, physical function, religious and social activities were shown to influence the self-esteem. In addition, ADL, physical function, and religious activities influenced the life satisfaction of elderly women.
