A Study of Depression in Female Seniors Living Alone: A Comparison Between the Young-old and the Old-old Adults (여성 독거노인의 우울에 관한 연구: 전기와 후기노인의 비교를 중심으로)

  • This study is a longitudinal study of female older adults living alone, one of the most vulnerable groups in our society, to determine how their depression changes over time and what factors affect their depression. At the same time, considering that there is a large difference in age among the same older adults, this study divided the female older adults into the young-old and the old-old to see how the predictors of depression in each group differ from each other. The main findings are as follows First, depression among female older adults living alone appears to have a declining pattern over time. In the conditional model, factors affecting the initial level of the depression trajectory among women living alone were found to be associated with lower initial depression values among those living in metropolitan areas rather than non-metropolitan areas, better subjective health, and those who did not exercise. Next, we examined the factors affecting rate of change (slope) in depression among female living alone older adults and found that the higher the age, the larger the metropolitan area, the better the subjective health, the less socializing, and the more socializing, the greater the decrease in depression level. Finally, there were some differences in the pathways affecting the initial value and slope of depression among female older adults living alone between the early and late older adults. Specifically, the higher the initial level of participation in social activities, the greater the change in depression among the late older adults, while there was no significant relationship among the early older adults. In the early older adults, better initial subjective health was associated with a larger change in depression than in the late older adults. Only in the late older adults did those who regularly exercised in the early years have higher initial depression values than those who did not. Based on the results of the above analyses, suggestions were made to reduce depression among female older adults living alone.

The Moderating Effects of Band Circuit Training for the Mortality Improvement of Elderly Women (노인여성의 사망률 개선을 위한 밴드 서킷 트레이닝의 중재 효과)

  • This study aims to examine the moderating effects of band circuit training for the mortality improvement of elderly women to provide an effective exercise moderating program for the enhanced quality of life of the elderly. To achieve the purpose of this study, the moderating effects of 8 weeks of band circuit training in the Senior Fitness Tests (SFT) and Sitting Rising Tests (SRT) of elderly women ages 65 and older in Y city were examined and the following results were gained. The functional fitness of elderly women according to the moderating effects of band circuit training (sitting down in a chair and standing up, lifting 2 kg dumbbells, walking in place for 2 minutes, sitting in a chair and bending forward, hand holding behind one's back, walking back and forth for 2.44 m) and the Sitting Rising Test (SRT) displayed statistically significant interaction effects among measurement times and groups and positive improvements were shown in the test group after band circuit training moderation. These research results show that band circuit training moderation has a positive effect on functional fitness and SRT, which are associated with the mortality rate of the elderly, and thus it can be applied as an effective exercise moderation program for the improvement of quality of life through the mortality improvement of the elderly.

  • 한국과학기술단체총연합회는 전국민과학화운동 지침을 마련하고 이를 적극 실천해 나가기로 했다. 과총이 마련한 이 지침에 따르면 첫째 전국민의 기술ㆍ기능화 촉진과 둘째 생활의 과학화와 국민의식구조 개선으로 비합리성을 없애고 생산적이고 진취적인 국민기상을 만들어 국가건설에 이바지하기로 했다. 과총은 전국민 생활의 과학화운동을 자손만대에 이르기까지 영원한 과제로 삼고 계속 추진해 나가기로 했다. 한편 과총이 전국민 생활의 과학화운동의 일환으로 마련한 각종 사업계획에 따르면 표어를 현상 모집하여 학회ㆍ단체의 공문에 홍보케하고 포스타를 제작, 전국 과학관련에 배포하며 초ㆍ중ㆍ고생 및 청년을 대상으로 생활과학웅변대회를 개최한다. 이 밖에 학생ㆍ주부ㆍ노인을 위한 생활과학강좌와 과학자 모교방문강연 및 과학기술인 1억 모금운동도 전개키로 했다. 과총이 마련한 전국민 과학화운동 지침 전문은 다음과 같다.

Influence of the Silver Line Dance Effects on the Elderly Balance During Static Standing (여성노인들의 라인댄스 활동이 정적 직립 균형성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of line dance activity on the balance factors during static standing to reveal the exercise intervention for fall prevention. A 15-week line dance programme was applied to 16 elderly females who aged more than 65 years in the community. Balance ability during static standing was evaluated by the range of center of pressure(cop), the velocity of cop, and sway area that calculated on the basis of ground reaction force data, forces, and moments. The range and velocity of cop in the anterio-posterior were significantly reduced after line dance(p<.01, p<.05, respectively), but change in those of cop in the medio-lateral was not found. It was demonstrated that 16-week line dance activities allow more effective in anterio-posterior stability and sway area of static standing. It was suggested that the effect of fall prevention exercise should be studied more associate with fall from vestibular and sensory system as future study.

A Convergence Study on Determinants of Life Satisfaction among Rural Older Adults: Focusing on Mediating Effect of Self-rated Health (농촌노인의 삶의 만족도 결정요인에 대한 융합 연구: 주관적 건강상태의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the variables that directly affect self-rated health and life satisfaction, and to examine the mediating effect of self-rated health on life satisfaction. The study utilized multiple regression to analyze the data obtained from interviewing 169 older adults aged 60 and over in G-gun in 2015. The results are as follows. First, the number of diseases had a negative effect on self-related health, whereas self-rated economic status and length of exercise time had a positive effect. Second, self-rated economic status, length of exercise time, regular meals, and the number of meals per day positively affect life satisfaction. Third, self-rated economic status and the length of exercise time affect life satisfaction by partially mediating self-rated health, whereas the number of diseases affected life satisfaction by totally mediating self-rated health. Based on the results, policies related to healthcare and provision of meals for older adults have been suggested.

Effects of Aquarobics Exercise on Body Composition, Fitness andHealth Related Quality of Life(SF-36) in Elderly Women (아쿠아로빅 운동이 노인 여성의 신체구성, 체력 및건강관련 삶의 질(SF-36)에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to investigate the effects of aquarobics exercise on body composition, fitness and health related quality of life (sf-36) in elderly women and to provide basic data to exercise prescription. The subjects were the 60~70 years old seniors who participated in exercise program at health promotion center and had been divided into exercise(N=25) and control(N=30) group, respectively. Aquarobics exercise was performed twice per week for 8 weeks at 40~70% heart rate reserve(exercise intensity) and body composition, fitness and SF-36 were measured before and after exercise. In body composition, there were significance in weight(p=0.044), body mass index(p=0.038), and %fat(p=0.005) between groups before and after. In fitness, there were no significance in fitness such as chair stand, and chair sit and reach, but there were significance in 2-minute step(p<0.001), arm curl(p=0.005), back scratch(p=0.023), and 8-ft up and go(p<0.001) between groups. In SF-36, there were no significance in physical functioning, role limitation-physical, role limitation-emotional, social functioning, mental health, and vitality, but there were significance in bodily pain(p=0.039), and general health(p=0.024) between groups. It was found that aquarobics exercise was one of the good exercise types for the elderly to improve body composition and fitness. Also, there was positive effect on health-related quality of life partially.

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of aroma inhalation on pain, anxiety, and heart rate variability of elderly women with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) during continuous passive motion (CPM) exercise. Equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were randomized to intervention group (n=26) or control group (n=27). Participants inhaled aroma or distilled water for 5 minutes before CPM exercise and for 40 minutes during CPM exercise on 3 consecutive days. Pain NRS, number of painkiller used, anxiety NRS, blood pressure, and heart rate variability (HRV) were measured before and after intervention. Pain NRS, anxiety NRS, blood pressure in experimental group were significantly lower than those of control group. All indices of HRV were significantly different between the two groups. Based on these results, it can be concluded that aroma inhalation was effective in decreasing pain and anxiety and changing HRV among elderly women with TKA during CPM exercise.

Sports injuries and the changes in physical activity, perceived health state and exercise self-efficacy according to the sports injuries of the elderly who participate in physical activities (신체활동참여 노인의 운동손상과 운동손상유무에 따른 신체활동, 지각된 건강상태 및 운동자기효능감의 차이)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe sports injuries among elderly people and to compare physical activity, perceived health status and exercise self-efficacy between elderly people who had experienced a sports injury and elderly people who hadn't. Methods: The sample of this study were 100 elderly in Korea, 51 of whom had had a sports injury. The study used questionnaires to gather data. There were 8 demographic factors, 4 factors related to physical activity, perceived health status and exercise self-efficacy of the subjects. Data were analyzed by frequencies, chi-square test, and t-test. Result: Among the sports injured elders, one occurrence of a sport injury was 86.3%. There were more outdoor than indoor sports injuries of elders (66.7%), and sports injuries of elders occurred more in the winter (82.7%). The major cause of the sports injuries was loss of balance. Ankles were frequently damaged from these injuries. The most significant change after the sports injury was reduction of physical activity (60.8%). There were significant differences between sports injured elderly and non-injured elderly for age (${\chi}^2=2.58$, p=.011) and the amount of physical activity (t=1.96, p=.050), but there was no significant difference in perceived health status and exercise self-efficacy. Conclusion: To prevent sports injuries in the elderly means to maintain a medium level of physical activity and to improve their balance.

The Effects of Socioeconomic Position and Health Behavior on Geriatric Depressive Symptom (노인우울증에 대한 사회경제적 지위요인과 건강행태요인에 관한 연구)

  • In order to develop practical implications for depression among the elderly, this study examines socioeconomic and health-behavioral risk factors of geriatric depression diagnosis. Sample consists of 964 elders aged 65 and over, living in an urban community. Using the Short-form Geriatric Depression Scale(SGDS), study subjects were screened for geriatric depression to those who presented 10 points and over in SGDS. Descriptive statistics shows that about 22.2% elders are estimated to suffer from geriatric depression. Predictors of geriatric depression diagnosis were examined through logistic regression. Results show that elders who live with family, who have medical insurance, who have higher education, who don't smoke, and who do more physical activities were less likely to suffer from geriatric depression. These findings indicate that socioeconomic position such as health insurance, education and health behaviors such as smoking, physical activities are closely related to geriatric depression, suggesting that interventions on socioeconomic position and health behaviors may be effective to reduce depression among the elderly.
