  • In the present study, an improved design method was developed for the punching shear strength of interior slabcolumn connections and column footings with and without shear reinforcement. In the evaluation of the punching shear strength, the possible failure mechanisms of the connections and column footings were considered. The considered failures modes were inclined tensile cracking of concrete, yielding of shear re-bars, and concrete crushing of compression zone/strut. The punching shear applied to the concrete critical section was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone. The punching shear strength of the concrete compression zone was evaluated based on the material failure criteria of the concrete subjected to the compressive normal stress and shear stress. For verification of the proposed design method, its prediction was compared with the existing test results. The result showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than the current design methods of the KCI code for both the shear reinforced and unreinforced cases.

  • An experimental investigation was conducted to study the behavior of RC wide beam-column joints with slab subjected to reversed cyclic loads under constant axial load. Six half scale interior wide beam-column assemblies representing a portion of a frame subjected to simulated seismic loading were tested, including three specimens without slab and three specimens with slab. The primary variables were the ratio of column-to-beam flexural capacity ($M_r={\Sigma}M_c/{\Sigma}M_b$ ; 0.77~2.26), ratio of the column-to-beam width (b/H ; 1.54, 1.67). Test results are shown that (1) the current design code and practice for interior joints(type 2) are apply to the wide beam-high strength concrete column. (2) the presence of a slab have an effect on the performance of the wide beam-high strength concrete column interior joints(type 2). therefore in the design of the wide beam-high strength concrete column interior joints(type 2), the width of slab effective as a T beam flange should be considered. It was show that the case of the ratio of column-to-beam flexural capacity is more than 2.0, the effective width of slab are 2 times of an effective depth of wide beam, however if the ratio of column-to-beam flexural capacity is 1.4~2.0, the effective width of slab are not able to be considered.

  • In this study, we employed Highly Ductile Cement Composite (HDCC) to evaluate the flexural performance of a RC slab that simulates the laminating structure of a seashell. To evaluate flexural performance, we produced conventional RC slab specimens, HDCC slab specimens, and HDCC-M slab specimens which biomimics a seashell's layered structure by inserting PE mesh inside the slab made of HDCC. A series of 4-point bending tests were conducted. Experimental results shows the flexural strength of the HDCC-M slab specimen was 1.7 times and 1.2 times higher than that of the RC and HDCC slab specimens, respectively. Furthermore, the ductility was evaluated using the ratio of yield deflection to maximum deflection, and it was confirmed that the HDCC slab test specimen exhibited the best ductility. This is most likely due to the fact that the inserted PE mesh separates the layers and increases ductility, while the HDCC passing through the mesh prevents the loss of load carrying capacity due to layer separation.

  • In the flat-plate slab design of the KCI and ACI building code, the punching shear strength of connections with shear reinforcement can increase one and half times to that of connections without shear reinforcement. And the ACI-ASCE committee 352 recommendations propose limiting the direct shear ratio $V_g$/$V_c$ on interior connections to 0.4 to insure adequate drift capacity. In this study, four interior column-slab connections were tested to look into the punching shear strength and the lateral displacement capacity of the flat-plate slab with and without shear reinforcement under cyclic lateral loading. Based on the test results, it is found that the provision about punching shear strength in the codes may appropriate for the gravity loading only whereas it is unconservative for the lateral loading and that the limit of ACI-ASCE committee 352 appears conservative.

  • It has been shown that the air-conditioning system with slab cooling storage is effective in cutting peak load and utilizing nighttime electric power. The stochastic properties of internal heat generation which has great influence on the cooling load are examined in this paper. Based on the measured cooling load and electric power consumption in an office building with slab cooling storage, stochastic time series models to simulate these random processes are investigated. Furthermore, a calculated result by an optimal control method of thermal analysis taking into account the internal heat is compared with the measured cooling load.

  • A combination of CFT column and RC flat plate without formworks is very effectively rapid constructions. This paper verified the lateral resisting capacity of CFT column-RC flat plate exterior connection in comparison with general RC column-flat plate connection and detected moment capacity and ductility capacity of connection according to moment-displacement ratio. We made and tested specimens which have different variables respectively and as a result derive a following conclusion. In CFT-E2 specimen a critical section was extended and maximum moment increased 20% respectively in comparison to general RC column specimen. In BME and CFT-E1 specimens generally shear governed behaviors and CFT-E2 specimen complemented with seismic band, flexure behavior region of slab was extended and also ductility ratio and energy absorptance increased.

  • In this paper, to intend anticorrosive effect and weight reduction of conventional reinforced concrete slab, lightweight concrete slab reinforced with glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP) bar was considered and some basic behaviour of the slab were investigated. Measurement of splitting tensile strength and fracture energy of the concrete, a number of flexural experiment of the slab, numerical analysis using nonlinear finite element analysis, and comparison of the experimental results to the numerical analysis, were conducted. As a result, even the weight of the lightweight concrete slab could be reduced by about 28% than the normal concrete slab, failure load of the lightweight concrete slab was 36% smaller than the normal concrete slab. Such a thing can be attributed to the lower axial stiffness and lower bond strength of GFRP bar. In the numerical analysis, to consider decreasing property of bond strength of the lightweight concrete, interface element was used between the concrete and the GFRP bar elements and this method was shown to be a better way for the numerical analysis to approach the experimental results.

  • Recently, the construction of underground structure such as a double-deck tunnel is increasing to manage rapid growth of roadway traffic volume. Double-deck tunnel includes middle slab to separate upper and lower road inside, and various sources affect the dynamic behaviour of middle slab due to dynamic loading of vehicle. Therefore, it is important to investigate the dynamic response of middle slab precisely to apply it to design and analysis of double-deck tunnel. In this study, dynamic analysis model of middle slab considering structural type, design velocity, vehicle load, and surface roughness, etc. is built. 3-dimensional dynamic analysis is performed to assess dynamic response of middle slab. Consequently, Dynamic Magnification Factor which represents dynamic response of middle slab shows maximum in case of elastomeric bearings (EB) and average roughness (Grade C). It is also expected that dynamic response can be reduced under the condition of good roughness (Grade B) and fixed bearings (FB).

  • This study performs an experimental investigation to evaluate the behavior of RC flat plate interior joints specimens. Three 60 percent scale Flat Plate interior specimens assemblies representing a portion of a Flat Plate Apartment Structural System subjected to simulated seismic loading (unbalanced moments) under constant axial load were tested, including one specimens with ordinary shear reinforcement and two specimens with folded bend type shear reinforcement. Test results are shown that (1) the design code KBC 2009 is accurate estimate the behavior of specimens. (2) Two types shear reinforcement have a similar structural behavior, but construction work of rebar with folded bend type shear reinforcement is easier than that of ordinary shear reinforcement. (3) In moderate seismic region, RC Flat Plate interior joint with folded bend type shear reinforcement is apply to structural design of Flat Plate.

  • Three interior slab-column connections designed by equal static moments and by different distribution of end and midspan moments were tested. Each test specimen consists of a 4.2 m square slab and a 355 mm square column stub. The slab thickness is 152 mm. Test results showed not only that flat plate systems can undergo considerable redistribution of moments from the uncracked state to final maximum capacity, but also that the distribution of moments is controlled largely by the distribution of reinforcement adopted by the designer. Tests also indicated that the punching shear strength of slabs can be affected by the redistributed moments.
