  • In the present study, a numerical simulations are investigated in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid phase and distribution of solid particles are predicted in stirred tanks consisting of 4-pitched paddles impeller and baffles. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in a stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase.

  • In the present study, a transient incompressible viscous turbulent flow is simulated for the automotive torque converter with moving mesh technique. For the analysis, entire torque converter flow passages are modeled. Computed torque ratio, capacity factor and efficiency show a good agreement with the experiment data. The flow instabilities characterized by back-flow and wake etc. appeared in some cascade passages are shown to be Propagating along tangential direction. These flow patterns are mainly influenced by the pump and turbine blade passing and can't be predicted through conventional steady simulation with a mixing plane approach. The understanding of the unsteady flow characteristics in a torque converter achieved in the present study may lead to the optimal design of a torque converter.

  • Hard disk drives (HDD) in computer are used extensively as data storage capacity. The trend in the computer industry to produce smaller disk drives rotating at higher speeds requires an improved understanding of fluid motion in the space between disks. PIV measurement was used fer the unsteady flow between the center pair of four disks of four times larger than common radius of HDD disk at several rpm in a fixed cylindrical enclosure. The boundary between inner region and outer region is detected using PIV measurement and the number of dominant vortices s determined clearly. Tip vortices generated by an obstruction with actual-like configuration can be found at inner region. Oscillating flow from the obstruction appears at outer region with complex flow pattern.

The transient flow field of liquid and distribution of solid particles were predicted in the stirred tank with pitched paddle impeller and baffles. The Frozen rotor method is adopted to consider the rotating motion of the impeller. • In this paper, thermal sensitivity of the solid fuel grain in the hybrid rocket motor was investigated. When the heat from the non-reacting hot flow passing the grain ports is transferred to the solid fuel grain, the temperature fields in the solid fuel was numerically analyzed. These numerical analyzes were performed under the different nine port radii, and the critical distance between the ports in which the temperature in the solid fuel is sensibly responding was determined. Thus, the critical distance between the ports would be the important consideration for the design of the fuel grain because the high temperature in the fuel can bring the structural problems.

  • The hysteresis phenomena are frequently encountered in the wide variety of fluid flow systems of industrial and engineering applications. Hysteresis mainly appears during the transient change of pressure ratios, and this, in turn, influences the performance the supersonic wind tunnel. However, investigations on the hysteresis phenomenon particularly inside the supersonic wind tunnel are rarely studied. In the present study, numerical simulations are carried out to investigate hysteresis phenomenon of the shock waves inside the Supersonic Wind Tunnel. The unsteady, compressible flow through the supersonic wind tunnel is computationaly analyzed with an symmetric model. The Navier-Stokes equations are solved with Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The variaton in the flow field between the starting pressure ratio and operating pressure ratio of a supersonic wind tunnel is investigated in terms of hysteresis phenomenon.

  • In the present study, a 2-D chimera technique for overlapped bodies in relative motion is developed using unstructured triangular meshes. The solid boundary nodes located next to the intersecting point between bodies are merged to the intersecting point to assure accurate representation of the intersecting region. In order to assign proper value of flow variables at the nodes located out of the computational field, interpolation is conducted for non-active nodes. For validation, the motions of a NACA64A006 airfoil and a NACA0012 airfoil with a plane flap are computed and the results are compared with other simulations. The motion of a launching missile ejected from a NACA0012 airfoil is also simulated.

  • Hysteresis phenomena are often encountered in a wide variety of fluid flow systems used in industrial and engineering applications. Hence, in recent years, a significant amount of research been focusing on clarifying the physics of the flow hysteresis appearing during the transient change of the pressure ratios and influencing the performance of the supersonic wind tunnel. However, investigations on the hysteresis phenomenon, particularly when it occurs inside the supersonic wind tunnel, are rare. In this study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the hysteresis phenomena of the shock waves encountered in a supersonic wind tunnel. The unsteady and compressible flow was analyzed with an axisymmetric model, and the N-S equations were solved by using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The optimal pressure ratio was determined from the hysteresis curves, and the results can be utilized to operate the wind tunnel efficiently.

  • In flip chip packaging, underfill process is used to fill epoxy bonder into the gap between a chip and a substrate in order to improve the reliability of electronic devices. Underfill process by capillary motion can give rise to unwanted air void formations since the arrangement of solder bumps affects the interfacial dynamics of flow meniscus. In this paper, the unsteady flows in the capillary underfill process are visualized and then the racing effect and merging of the meniscus are investigated according to the arrangement of solder bumps. The result is shown that at higher bump density, the fluid flow perpendicular to the main direction of flow becomes stronger so that more air voids are formed. This phenomenon is more conspicuous at a staggered bump array than at a rectangular bump array.
