  • In tunnel, though the frequency of fire occurrence is relatively lower than other structures, the characteristics of sealed space tends to cause the temperature to rapidly rise to more than $1000^{\circ}C$ within 5 minutes after fire, which might eventually lead to a large fire that usually results in a loss of lives and the damage to the properties, not to mention a huge cost necessary for repair and maintenance after fire. Referring to foreign tunnel fire scenarios, it clarified the heat transfer characteristics of concrete PC panel lining depending on fire intensity (ISO, MHC, RWS), and to identify the range of thermal damage, the evaluation was carried out using ITA standard. As a result, 39mm under ISO fire condition, 50mm under MHC and 100mm under RWS were measured. And when it comes to spalling, 30mm was measured under RWS. When PC panel was designed to serve the support, a fire resistance to the minimum depth of 100mm of the concrete that might be damaged under the fire shall be maintained, and in case of a non-support structure, PC lining shall have at least 100mm thickness.

  • Precast culvert system is generally constructed with a series of process such as excavation, ground mitigation, placement of culverts, anti-leakage packing between adjacent culverts, post-tensioning for PS strands and backfilling. In this process inappropriate ground mitigation often causes differential settlement and, correspondingly, makes water-leakage to be occurred between adjacent boxes. This study was performed to understand the behavioral characteristics of recently proposed precast foundation plate to support precast culvert system through on-site pilot construction. The gap between two adjacent culverts, increment of earth pressure at the bottom of culvert, vertical settlement of top of the culverts were monitored using various sensors. The monitoring results showed that the proposed foundation plate provides better culvert system in the points of less gap development, earth pressure and settlement at the adjacent of two culverts.

  • In this research stress-strain behavior of composite geocell-soil systems under triaxial condition and the influence of strength due to the presence of geocell were studied. For the research a series of triaxial tests were carried out on sand specimens confined by flexible-walled single rubber cell. The diameter of all rubber cells placed at the center of the soil sample were 50 mm. Three rubber sizes, i.e. 35, 50 and 70 mm height, were applied to the soil specimen and the size of soil specimen was 50 mm in diameter and 100 mm in height. Three different densities of soil were used for the tests. In general, it was observed that the sand specimen develops an apparent cohesion due to the confinement by the geocell. The magnitude of this cohesion seemed to be dependent to the properties of the geocell material. The test results have shown that the geocell material for this research not only develops the apparent cohesion but also increases the angle of friction whereas geosynthetic material in the references showed only the increase of apparent cohesion. From the application of geocell-soil composites to the hyperbolic model, it was recognized that the determination of the peak strength influences the behavior of the geocell-soil composites.

  • Currently, fluid transfer steel pipes take a lot of time and expense to maintain all facilities due to new construction and painting or corrosion and aging. Therefore, this study was conducted for designing a CFRP pipe structure with high corrosion resistance and chemical resistance as a substitute for steel pipes. The helical/hoop pattern was cross-laminated to improve durability, and HNT was added to suppress the moisture absorption phenomenon of the epoxy. The HNT/CFRP pipe was manufactured by a filament winding process, and performed a mechanical property test, and a moisture absorption test in distilled water at 70℃. As a result, the highest bending strength was obtained when the hoop pattern was laminated with a thickness equivalent to 0.6% of the pipe. The 0.5 wt% HNT specimen had the highest moisture absorption resistance. Also, the delamination phenomenon at the interlayer interface was delayed, resulting in the lowest strength reduction rate.

  • The high-density polyurethane method uses the instantaneous expansion pressure of injected material to stabilize soft ground, allowing reinforcement, restoration, and construction to be carried out in suboptimal ground conditions. Under normal and, even poor conditions, the method is easily applied because the working time is very short. The method is environmentally friendly and results have excellent durability. The purpose of this study was to verify the physical and mechanical properties of high-density polyurethane in the ground. Initial testing of strength, direct shear, and soil environment stability was followed by testing for permeability in order to address environmental concerns. The results of the experiments showed that the internal friction angle was about twice as high and the adhesion was about 2.5 to 3.5 times higher than for dense and hard clay, and that the permeability factor was significantly lower compared with the existing grouting method, within the range of 1.0 × 10-5.

  • The Concrete-Filled Tube (CFT) system was developed for its excellent structural performance, such as its good stiffness, stress and ductility, which is derived from the mechanical advantages of its composite structure. However, it is known that the flat type of reinforcing plates need stiffeners placed at a certain distance from each other to avoid buckling failure, which increases the cost accordingly. This paper investigates the contribution of the rib elements placed inside the steel tube for the purpose of increasing the bond strength between the steel and concrete and fire performance with no additional protection. The test results also demonstrate the effectiveness of the corrugated rib's shape against fire. The results of this study showed that the buckling prevention and fire resistance performance criteria were satisfied by the application of the inner surface attachment rib, due to the resulting increase in the strength of the CFT column. Therefore, it is considered that the CFT method using the corrugated rib structure reinforcement developed through this study satisfies the structural and fire resistance performance criteria without the need for a refractory coating. Future studies will be needed to make the process efficient and economical for factory production.

  • Fire resistance of new hybrid timber framed wall systems was evaluated in this study. These wall systems are composed of two major structural parts. One part is a heavy timber frame part designed to take charge of whole vertical load using heavy timber post and beam, and the other is an infill wall structure, designed to take charge of whole horizontal load and to provide an established level of fire resistance. A basic concept of this hybrid wall is adopted from a typical furniture structure with frame. A timber post and beam frame is constructed with Japanese Larch solid timber post(180mm by 180mm) and beam(180mm by 240mm). As infill wall systems, two types of walls are applied. One is a typical light timber framed wall with solid blocking and another is a structural insulated panel wall, in which polystyrene insulation is filled between two structural panels to make single structure. For all tested walls, two layers of 12.5mm thick type-X gypsum boards are used on fire exposed side. Prior to tests for hybrid walls, only infill walls are tested without heavy timber frame. All fire resistance tests are carried out in accordance with KS F 2257, and temperatures on several points within wall structure and unexposed wall surface are measured during fire tests. It is considered that the reinforcement of heavy timber frame is significantly efficient for improving the fire resistance of timber framed walls.

  • Ultra rapid-hardening cement is widely used for latex-modified mortar and concrete as repair and finishing material during urgent work. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the improvements in strength made to SBR cement mortars by the adding of various admixtures and by the use of different curing methods. SBR cement mortar was prepared with various polymer-cement ratios, curing conditions and admixture contents, and tested for flow, flexural and compressive strengths. From the test results, it was determined that the flow of SBR cement mortar increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and the water reducing ratio also increased. The strength of cement mortar is improved by using SBR emulsion, and is strengthened by adding metakaoline. The strength of SBR cement mortar cured in standard conditions was increased with an increase in the polymer-cement ratio, and attained the maximum strengths at polymer-cement ratios of 15 % and 10 %, respectively. The maximum strengths of SBR cement mortar are about 1.8 and 1.3 times the strengths of plain mortar, respectively. In this study, it is confirmed that the polymer-cement ratio and curing method are important factors for improving the strengths of rapid-hardening SBR cement mortar.

  • Considerable advance has been made on research on effect of steel pipe Umbrella Arch Method (UAM) and mechanical reinforcement mechanism through numerical analyses and experiments. Due to long analysis time of three-dimensional analysis and its complexity, un-quantitative two-dimensional analysis is dominantly used in the design and application, where equivalent material properties of UAM reinforced area and ground are used, For this reason, development of reasonable, theoretical, quantitative and easy to use design and analysis method is required. In this study, both field UAM tests and laboratory tests were performed in the residual soil to highly weathered rock; field tests to observe the range of reinforcement, and laboratory tests to investigate the change of material properties between prior to and after UAM reinforcement. It has been observed that the increase in material property of neighboring ground is negligible, and that only stiffness of steel pipe and cement column formed inside the steel pipe and the gap between steel pipe and borehole contributes to ground reinforcement. Based on these results and concept of Convergence Confinement Method (CCM), two dimensional axisymmetric analyses have been performed to obtain the longitudinal displacement profile (LDP) corresponding to arching effect of tunnel face, UAM effect and effect of supports. In addition, modified load distribution method in two dimensional plane-strain analysis has been suggested, in which effect of UAM is transformed to internal pressure and modified load distribution ratios are suggested. Comparison between the modified method and conventional method shows that larger displacement occur in the conventional method than that in the modified method although it may be different depending on ground condition, depth and size of tunnel, types of steel pipe and initial stress state. Consequently, it can be concluded that the effect of UAM as a beam in a longitudinal direction is not considered properly in the conventional method.
